Brand guide / Tillett

Tillett seats: start with the shell, then the mount

The compact shells are why Tillett works so well in Caterhams, Lotuses, kit cars and narrow track builds. The model name still needs reading carefully. Screamer is one FIA family, not the whole FIA range, and the bracket direction can decide whether the package fits between the tunnel and sill.

The short version

Need FIA? Check the B6 Screamer, B7 Epoxy and C1 families, then verify the physical label. Need a compact road or track-day shell? Standard B6, B8, B10 and W models may suit. After that, match the exact mounting version and cockpit.

The FIA shortcut on the old guide was incomplete

The previous page said Screamer was the word that made a Tillett FIA approved. The B6 Screamer is homologated, but Tillett also lists the B7 Epoxy and C1 as FIA 8855-1999 seats. We have corrected the range and removed the claim that approval is the only difference between a B6 and B6 Screamer.

01 / Selection

Four questions before the product list

A Tillett order is a seat, a mounting version and a car installation, not just a familiar B-number.

1

Will the car be scrutineered?

If so, identify the exact standard required and check the physical FIA label and current event rules.

2

Which shell fits the driver?

Compare hip, thigh, torso and shoulder support. Tillett size suffixes and edge cuts change internal and external dimensions.

3

How much cockpit width is available?

Measure the narrow point between tunnel and sill, then check door, shoulder and roll-cage clearance.

4

Bottom mount or side mount?

Standard B6 versions can be ordered either way. Most FIA models use their specified side-mount arrangement.

5

Fixed position or road runner?

Decide before choosing brackets. Tillett advises that runners are intended for road use, not a race car.

A Tillett can solve a cockpit that feels impossible, but only if we know the edge width, mounting version and driver. The letter and number on their own are not enough.

02 / FIA seats

Screamer, B7 and C1 are different answers

All three are FIA 8855-1999 families, but they solve different packaging and support problems.

FamilyWhat Tillett publishesCheck before ordering
B6 ScreamerCompact competition shell in standard and XL sizes with different edge-width optionsExact label, edge width and side-mount choice
B7 EpoxyLIGHTEST FIACarbon fibre FIA shell published at 3.8 kg in homologated variantsNot every B7 edge or XL variant carries the same status
C1B6-derived competition shape with side-impact head supportStandard or XL size, edge width and visibility in the car

The current B6 Screamer, B7 Epoxy and C1 pages all describe FIA 8855-1999 homologated versions. The B7 page also warns that a B7-43 XL edge-off option is not homologated. That is exactly why we check the complete variant rather than shortening the answer to a family name.

For competition, compare the physical label with the current FIA Technical List 12 and then read the event rules and mounting instructions.

03 / Current FIA range

Competition-seat starting points

Live cards show the current store price. Variant, label, driver and mounting still need checking.

The B6 Screamer is the most familiar route and offers standard and XL shells. The C1 adds head support. The B7 trades into a different price and weight bracket and should not be treated as a carbon version of the standard B6.

04 / Road and track

A non-FIA Tillett is not a lesser seat for the wrong job

If the event does not require homologation, the standard and W families can give the compact driving position without buying a competition label.

The normal B6 comes in GRP or Carbon/GRP and in standard or XL width. It can also be bottom or side mounted, which affects the fitting parts. The B8 and B10 cover other driver and cockpit shapes. W seats use a simpler composite construction and include very low or semi-reclined options.

Do not use the phrase Road and Track as a promise of UK road legality. The complete vehicle installation, original restraints, airbags, warning systems and inspection requirements still matter.

05 / Compact shells

Popular non-FIA Tillett choices

Choose by driver and cockpit, then select the correct bottom- or side-mount version.

The B6 is the obvious place to start in a narrow kit car, but it is not automatically the best shape for every driver. We compare the shell against the B8, B10 XL and W range when hip room, torso support or seating angle points elsewhere.

06 / Generic side mounts

Inward or outward changes the footprint

The seat list is broad, but standard B6 models must be the side-mount version.

MountDirection and materialUseful when
STBINARROW FOOTPRINT5 mm aluminium, points inward under the shellThe tunnel-to-sill width is tight
STBO5 mm aluminium, points outwardThe cockpit has width and you want easier fastener access
VTBI3 mm steel, points inwardA lower-cost inward bracket suits the installation
VTBO3 mm steel, points outwardA lower-cost outward bracket suits the available floor width
STBTTaller aluminium side mountA saloon-style floor needs extra bracket height

Tillett’s current STBI and STBO pages list B6 Screamer, B7, B8, B9, B10 and C1 families, plus side-mount versions of the standard B6. Both accept the corresponding Tillett road runners, but Tillett advises against runners in a race car.

07 / Mounting parts

Current generic brackets and runners

Product names retain some former codes to help owners match older paperwork.

Work from the compatibility list on the current product, not a remembered TB or TR code from a forum post. A code change is not proof that two parts have the same use in every installation.

08 / Vehicle-specific

Lotus and Mazda kits still need the exact seat and car

Model year, side, seat width and restraint mounting can all change the bracket package.

The EBS Elise and Exige bracket covers a long seat list, but Tillett gives different notes for the wider seats, passenger side and pre-2017 chassis. The Emira package is its own runner and bracket set and includes original-belt mounting points, but it does not solve the electrical warning light.

Mazda MX-5 packages also vary by generation and whether the car keeps original runners. Give us the model year and photographs of what is fitted rather than ordering from MX-5 alone.

A bracket is not the whole restraint installation

Check the seat belt or harness anchorages separately. Some brackets have no hip-belt mounting point; others are designed around the original belt. Do not add an anchorage to a bracket unless the manufacturer specifies it.

09 / Final checks

Put the driver in the installed position before calling it finished

Low and narrow only help if the controls, restraints and escape route still work.

Check

  • Hip and thigh fit
  • Shoulder freedom and side support
  • Helmet, cage and roof clearance
  • Wheel and pedal reach
  • Harness or road-belt route
  • Every bracket fastener

Do not assume

  • Every B6 is side mounted
  • Every B7 variant is FIA
  • A runner belongs in a race car
  • A Lotus kit fits every year
  • The smallest shell fits the driver
  • A price list replaces the live label

The current Tillett 2026 retail list is useful for separating model variants, edge widths and mounting versions. Use the live product and documents supplied with the seat for the final order.

10 / Questions

Tillett questions we hear in store

Does Screamer mean FIA approved?

The B6 Screamer is FIA 8855-1999 homologated, but Screamer is not the only route to an FIA Tillett. Current B7 Epoxy and C1 variants are also homologated. Read the exact model and physical label.

Is a standard B6 the same seat as a B6 Screamer?

They share the compact B6 family shape, but they are not just one product with a different sticker. Tillett publishes the Screamer as a competition model with its own homologation, construction, weight and available edge or size variants.

Which Tillett is lightest?

Tillett currently publishes the B7 Epoxy at 3.8 kg and describes it as its lightest FIA 8855-1999 seat. Actual weight can vary, and fit, cockpit clearance and the event rules still decide whether it is the right seat.

What is the difference between STBI and STBO?

Both are 2-degree aluminium side mounts for a broad current seat list. STBI points inward under the shell for a smaller footprint; STBO points outward for a wider footprint and easier access where the cockpit has room.

Can I use runners in a race car?

Tillett states on its current bracket pages that its adjustment runners are intended for road use and advises against using them in a race car. Follow the seat, bracket and event requirements for the complete installation.

Do all B6 seats side mount?

No. Standard B6 and B6 XL can be ordered in bottom-mount or side-mount versions. A bracket list that names B6 may apply only to the side-mount version, so the full product code matters.

Will one Lotus bracket fit every Tillett?

No. Elise and Exige fitment changes with model year, seat width, side of the car and whether original belts or a harness need mounting. The Emira uses its own package. Check the exact vehicle bracket page.

What should I send for a Tillett recommendation?

Send the exact car, model year, seat side, intended event or road use, driver measurements and whether you need an FIA seat. Add cockpit width and photographs of the floor, sill and tunnel. Garreth or Cameron can then check the shell and mount together.

Driver, shell, mount and car

We will check the four parts together

Send driver measurements, the exact car and year, intended use and the narrowest cockpit width. Add photographs of the floor, tunnel, sill and any existing runners or belt mounts. Garreth or Cameron can then narrow the Tillett range properly.
