Nobody books a classic 911 in for seats because they dislike the car. What actually happens is the original seats turn fifty, the foam collapses on the bolster you slide across every time you get in, and a two hour drive starts to feel like work. Then there is the other 911 owner, the one who uses the car properly on tour and on trackdays, and wants to sit lower and be held better without the cabin losing its character.
A reclining sport seat handles both. You keep a backrest you can adjust on a long run, you gain real side support, and with the right trim the seat looks like it could have left Stuttgart in the car. We stock fitting frames for the air-cooled cars from all three of our frame brands, split by year, and that year split is the first thing to get right.
A fitting frame is the vehicle specific base that replaces the standard runners and sets your seat height. On the 911 all three of our frame brands are represented, but unlike most cars they split by build year, because the floor mountings changed over the life of the air-cooled cars. The three routes:

Check your build year before anything else, because it decides which routes are open. The split points are July 1973, when the long-bonnet cars gave way to the impact bumper G-body, and September 1984, after which Cobra do not list a frame. From late 1984 through the 964 and 993 the choice is Sparco or Planted.

Every seat here bolts down through a base mount pattern, and only two matter: Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm, Sparco recliners 345mm x 271mm, and the two do not interchange. Cobra and Sparco both say plainly that their frames are meant for their own seats, and that is how the table below pairs them. The exception is Corbeau, who drill their recliners for both patterns, and the Planted bracket, which is a flat base designed to take any of these brands with the right runners between seat and bracket.

If the brief is a seat that looks like it belongs in an air-cooled 911, this is where I start. The GT is Sparco’s retro recliner, and the Houndstooth edition is the one that stops people in the showroom: black bolsters around a houndstooth centre, which on a classic Porsche interior needs no explanation. Sparco publish a tighter fit range on this seat than on their other recliners, 32 to 36 inch waists and drivers under six foot, so it rewards sitting in one first, and it pairs naturally with the R100 below when the car is shared with a taller driver.
The R100 is the recliner we sell more of than any other, and in a 911 it earns its place as the sensible one. It is compact enough for the cabin, the recline knob clears the door card, and Sparco list it for all waist sizes and for drivers both over and under six foot, which makes it the easy recommendation when the car is shared. The flat, open base also means climbing in over a 911’s wide sill is less of a wrestle than it would be with a deep bolstered seat.
Cobra’s road-first recliner takes its name from Porsche’s home town, and the trim book reads like it was written for this car: basketweave, corduroy, houndstooth or tartan centres against vinyl outers, with silver or anthracite eyelets to finish the retro look properly. It is a compact seat too, 520mm across, with moderate bolsters that keep the climb over the sill easy. Built to order through Cobra’s Signature system, so the centre fabric, piping and stitching are your call.
Our top premium choice, for drivers who want the best seat on the page and intend to cover real miles in it. The Misano is Cobra’s flagship recliner, offered as the Lux and the Anniversary builds through the same Signature trim system as the Stuttgart, and despite being the largest seat here it is also the lightest of the Cobras at 11.5kg. On a 911 that tours as well as tracks, this is the one that makes a 500 mile day feel short, and it is the seat people refuse to get out of in the showroom.
Corbeau’s two most popular recliners are really one seat with two styling options. The base is the same on both and it is drilled for both bolt patterns, 291mm and 345mm, which makes these the only seats in this guide that fit every frame route on every year of air-cooled 911. The backrest is the choice: the SVR runs a taller, smoother modern back, the RRS the classic sculpted shape that suits an older interior. Both are sold as pairs, one order and both sides of the car are done. If you are over six foot, the RRS also comes in a Low Base version that buys back headroom under a 911’s roofline, so ask about that one when you order.
Between seat and frame go the sliding runners, and they follow the same pattern logic as everything else here. Ordering quirks worth knowing on this car: the Sparco subframes and the Planted brackets are listed per side, so a pair of seats means two frames in the basket, and the Sparco frames are handed, so state driver or passenger side when you order. Sparco recommend their own sliding runner kit with their 911 frames, and the Planted listing confirms it works with the car’s original seat belt clip buckle, which on an older 911 saves a job.

One thing on Corbeau’s runner options: the millimetre figure in their listing is the handle width, not a bolt pattern, so pick the option by handle instead of trying to match it to the numbers above. The Retro/Sportline option is the one for these two seats.

If the car leans towards track use, possibly: a fixed back saves weight and holds harder. If it were my money: the GT Houndstooth on the Sparco frame for the car that gets shown as much as driven, because nothing else here looks as right through a 911’s window.
