TRS Motorsport harnesses
TRS have been making harnesses in Doncaster since 1989 and it is the deepest single brand range on the site. There are 120+ TRS lines here, from a £2 back plate to a £315 FIA belt, and the naming tells you exactly what each one is once you know how to read it. Get one word wrong on this brand and you can end up with a harness that is not eligible for the way you drive, so start with the short version below.
HANS or FHR in a TRS product name is a restriction, not an upgrade. Those belts are approved for use only with a head restraint. If you do not run one, or you only run one sometimes, buy a belt listed HANS Friendly instead. It is usually the cheaper option anyway.
A harness manufacturer, and only that
TRS were incorporated in 1989 and they work out of Harworth Industrial Estate at Doncaster. Harnesses and harness fittings are the entire business, and 37 years of doing one thing is why the range runs to 120+ lines when most brands manage a dozen.
They build to FIA, SFI, ECE road car and military standards, a wider spread of approvals than most, and that is why the range splits cleanly into a road side and a competition side rather than trying to make one belt do both jobs. The company now trades as part of Certex UK under the Swedish group Axel Johnson International, and manufacture stays in Doncaster.
What we notice from selling them is the detail work. The Velcro patch on the outer lap strap so the belt sticks to the seat while you climb in, the thumb loops on the lower shoulder straps, the tab that holds an intercom lead. Those are TRS ideas and they are on every competition belt in the range.
TRS incorporated. Harness manufacture in the UK from the start.
Four approval routes rather than one, which is what lets the road range and the competition range be genuinely different products.
Velcro lap patches, thumb loops on the lower shoulder straps and an intercom tab on the shoulder. TRS pioneered them and they are standard across the competition belts.
The current ownership. Manufacture stays in Doncaster.
Six names to recognise
TRS name their harnesses in layers. Family first, then the fitment, then the adjuster grade. Learn the six below and you can read any listing on the site.
01Clubman
The road range. 50mm webbing, push button release buckle, ECE 16.08 E marked. Bolt in from £67.50 or clip in from £80. This is what goes in a road car with standard seats.
02Magnum
The FIA mainstay and the one most club racers end up with. 75mm webbing all round, aircraft quick release buckle, seven colours. £195 to £315 depending on adjusters.
03Pro
75mm shoulder straps onto 50mm laps, so a bit less bulk through the hips than a Magnum. Same FIA approval, and the International version runs 50mm throughout at £185.
04NASCAR
Lever latch release rather than a rotary buckle, which keeps working when it is full of mud. Listed with no approval, so this is the oval, rally kart and off road option. £125 to £195.
05Superlite and Ultralite
Not different harnesses. Superlite puts alloy adjusters on the shoulders, Ultralite runs them throughout, and TRS rate the alloy items 40 per cent lighter than steel.
06HANS and FHR
The fitment word, and the one that costs people money. A belt carrying it is approved for the device only. HANS Friendly is the one that works either way.
Four questions, in this order
The second question is where the money gets wasted on this brand.
Road car or competition car?
This picks your half of the range and it is not a quality judgement. The Clubman and Budget belts carry ECE 16.08 E marking, the same kind of approval a factory seat belt has, and they use a push button buckle. The Magnum and Pro belts are FIA homologated instead, which is what a scrutineer wants to see and what a road car does not need. A Clubman Clip In 4 Point is £100 and it is our best selling TRS product by a distance.
Do you run a HANS or an FHR, always?
If the answer is yes, the HANS and FHR Only belts are built for it, with the shoulder straps narrowed to 50mm where they cross the device. If the answer is no, or only sometimes, buy a belt listed HANS Friendly. Our listing for the Pro Superlite Single Seater says it plainly: approved for use only with an FHR or HANS device. The Magnum 6 Point FIA at £195 is HANS Friendly and covers both, and the HANS version of the same belt is £209. You are not paying much for the restriction, but you are paying to be restricted.
4 point or 6 point? That also picks your FIA standard
On TRS the two go together. Every FIA 4 point belt we hold is homologated to 8854-1998 and every FIA 6 point is 8853-2016, all 34 of them, no exceptions. So if your regulations name a standard, they have also named your layout. Check that before you choose on price, and read the expiry date printed on the label when the belt arrives.
Steel, Superlite or Ultralite adjusters?
The least urgent question. Steel adjusters are what most people run and they are fine. Superlite swaps the shoulder adjusters for alloy, Ultralite does the lot, and TRS quote 40 per cent off the adjuster weight. The reason to pay it is usually not the weight. Alloy adjusters run smoother, so a shared endurance car gets through a driver change quicker, and that is where we see them sell.
If you take one thing off this page, make it this. HANS or FHR in the name means that belt is for use with the device only. People see the word, assume it is the better version of the same harness and buy it for a car with no head restraint in it. It is fourteen quid more than the standard Magnum and it is the wrong belt for them. HANS Friendly is the one that covers both, and it is the one I sell most of.
Cameron, GSM PerformanceClubman, for the road
ECE 16.08 E marked, 50mm webbing, push button buckle. The Clip In 4 Point is our best selling TRS product on 428 sales and the Bolt In is the cheapest 4 point in the range at £67.50. The Superlite at the end runs a 75mm shoulder for the race look without changing the approval.

The HANS Friendly belts
Start here if you do not run a head restraint every time out. All four are FIA homologated and all four are listed HANS Friendly, so they cover you either way. The Magnum 4 Point is 8854-1998, the three 6 point belts are 8853-2016.

For a car with a head restraint in it
Buy from here only if you always run a HANS or FHR. The shoulder straps narrow to 50mm where they cross the device and the approval is written around it. The International at £185 is the cheapest route in and runs 50mm webbing throughout.

What the alloy adjusters buy you
Same webbing, same buckle, same approval as the standard versions. Alloy adjusters on the shoulders for Superlite and throughout for Ultralite, rated 40 per cent lighter than steel and noticeably smoother to pull. Popular with endurance teams sharing a car.

Latch release, for dirty environments
A lever latch buckle instead of the rotary aircraft one, which keeps working when it is packed with dirt. TRS list these with no approval, so they are for oval, rally kart and off road rather than anything scrutineered. Available in 50mm or 75mm webbing at much the same money.

Caterham, Westfield, MX-5 and single seater
Two seater kit cars need shorter shoulder straps and different mounting, so TRS build specific versions rather than expecting you to make a saloon belt work. The MX-5 Mk1 and Mk2 belt is bolt in. The single seater at the end is bolt in throughout and is FHR only.

Eyebolts, back plates and pads
Most TRS harnesses include 7/16 inch UNF eyebolts. Almost nobody remembers the back plate that spreads the load on the underside of the floor, and we have sold over 650 of them for good reason. The FISA plate is the bigger 65mm square pattern. Shoulder pads come in 2 inch and 3 inch, so match them to your webbing.

On the FIA standards. Every TRS 4 point FIA belt we stock is homologated to 8854-1998 and every 6 point is 8853-2016. That holds across all 34 of them. If your championship specifies a standard, it has also specified your harness layout, so check that first and pick the colour afterwards.
Four numbers worth knowing
Harnesses fail their first inspection on mounting far more often than on the belt itself. These are the ones we get asked about.
Common questions about TRS harnesses
Who are TRS Motorsport?▾
A British harness manufacturer incorporated in 1989 and based at Harworth Industrial Estate in Doncaster. They make to FIA, SFI, ECE road car and military standards, and they now trade as part of Certex UK within the Swedish group Axel Johnson International. Harnesses and harness accessories are the whole business, which is why the range goes as deep as it does.
What does HANS Only or FHR Only mean on a TRS harness?▾
It means the belt is approved for use with a head restraint and not without one. Our listing for the Pro Superlite Single Seater spells it out: FIA 8853-2016 approved for use only with an FHR or HANS device. The shoulder straps narrow to 50mm where they pass over it. FHR stands for Frontal Head Restraint and is the generic term for the same thing, so FHR Only and HANS Only mean the same. If you do not run one, buy a belt listed HANS Friendly instead.
What is the difference between HANS Friendly and HANS Specific?▾
HANS Friendly belts work with the device or without it, so they suit a driver who runs a head restraint on some events and not others. HANS Specific belts are the ones marked HANS or FHR Only and they are for the device only. We carry 34 HANS Friendly products and 15 HANS Specific, so read the attribute before you order.
Why are the 4 point belts 8854-1998 and the 6 point belts 8853-2016?▾
Because those are the two FIA standards TRS hold and they cover different harness types. It is completely consistent across our stock: all 11 FIA 4 point TRS belts are 8854-1998 and all 23 FIA 6 point belts are 8853-2016. So on this brand, choosing 4 or 6 point also chooses your standard. Check which one your regulations call for before you pick the layout.
Are TRS Clubman harnesses road legal?▾
The Clubman and Budget belts carry ECE 16.08 E marking, which is road car approval, and they use a push button release buckle like a factory belt. That is the range to look at for a road car. The Magnum and Pro belts are FIA homologated rather than E marked, which is a competition approval.
What do Superlite and Ultralite actually change?▾
The adjusters. Superlite puts alloy adjusters on the shoulder straps only, Ultralite runs them throughout, and TRS quote the alloy items at 40 per cent lighter than the steel ones. The webbing, the buckle and the approval are unchanged. Endurance teams like the Ultralite because alloy adjusters move faster during a driver change, which is worth more than the grams.
Do I need eyebolts and back plates as well?▾
Most TRS harnesses come with 7/16 inch UNF eyebolts included, and the listing says so. What people forget is the back plate that spreads the load on the other side of the floor. They are £2 for the standard plate and £2.89 for the larger FISA pattern, and between them we have sold over 650. Add them when you order rather than after.
Can I fit a 6 point harness to a road car?▾
The 6 point belts in the TRS range are FIA homologated competition harnesses and need a crotch strap mounting point and, in most cases, a bar or cage to run the shoulder straps to. For a road car with the standard seats and floor, the Clubman 3 or 4 point is the sensible route. Ring us with the car if you are not sure what you have to mount to.
Tell us whether you run a head restraint
That one answer decides which half of the TRS range you should be looking at, and it is the thing most orders get wrong. Tell us the car, what you race in and whether there is a HANS or FHR involved, and we will make sure the right belt goes in the basket. Ring and ask for Cameron.
