Top 5 reclining seat choices for your classic Porsche 911, including our fitting guide

Nobody books a classic 911 in for seats because they dislike the car. What actually happens is the original seats turn fifty, the foam collapses on the bolster you slide across every time you get in, and a two hour drive starts to feel like work. Then there is the other 911 owner, the one who uses the car properly on tour and on trackdays, and wants to sit lower and be held better without the cabin losing its character.

A reclining sport seat handles both. You keep a backrest you can adjust on a long run, you gain real side support, and with the right trim the seat looks like it could have left Stuttgart in the car. We stock fitting frames for the air-cooled cars from all three of our frame brands, split by year, and that year split is the first thing to get right.

  • Frames in stock for every air-cooled 911 from 1966 to 1998
  • Sparco and Planted cover 1966 to 1998, Cobra up to September 1984
  • Every seat in this guide is listed as 4 point harness compatible
  • The Planted route works with the car's original seat belt clip buckle

The three frame routes into a classic 911

A fitting frame is the vehicle specific base that replaces the standard runners and sets your seat height. On the 911 all three of our frame brands are represented, but unlike most cars they split by build year, because the floor mountings changed over the life of the air-cooled cars. The three routes:

291

Cobra subframes

Two frames: cars up to July 1973 at £255.00 inc VAT, and August 1973 to September 1984 at £190.00. Pairs with Cobra 291mm runners for the Stuttgart and Misano.

345

Sparco subframes

Two frames, both handed and per side for RHD driver and passenger: 1966 to 1973 at £87.00 inc VAT a side, 1974 to 1997 at £81.06. Sparco recommend their own sliding runner kit with these.

ANY

Planted brackets

Two brackets, 1966 to 1973 and 1974 to 1998, £222.60 inc VAT a side. Planted name Sparco, Cobra, Corbeau, Recaro and OMP seats, and the bracket works with the original seat belt clip buckle.

Which frames cover which 911

Check your build year before anything else, because it decides which routes are open. The split points are July 1973, when the long-bonnet cars gave way to the impact bumper G-body, and September 1984, after which Cobra do not list a frame. From late 1984 through the 964 and 993 the choice is Sparco or Planted.

996 onwards is a different jobThis guide covers the air-cooled cars. The water-cooled 996, 997 and later use different mountings and different frames, some of which we also stock, so if that is your car, ask us rather than working from this page.

The number that decides it

Every seat here bolts down through a base mount pattern, and only two matter: Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm, Sparco recliners 345mm x 271mm, and the two do not interchange. Cobra and Sparco both say plainly that their frames are meant for their own seats, and that is how the table below pairs them. The exception is Corbeau, who drill their recliners for both patterns, and the Planted bracket, which is a flat base designed to take any of these brands with the right runners between seat and bracket.

Pick the seat firstThen buy the frame route that matches its pattern and your build year. The Corbeaus keep every route open, and the Planted bracket keeps every seat open. Working out this combination for a given car and driver is exactly my job at GSM, so if you are stuck between two, ask.

Sparco GT: the period-correct pick

If the brief is a seat that looks like it belongs in an air-cooled 911, this is where I start. The GT is Sparco’s retro recliner, and the Houndstooth edition is the one that stops people in the showroom: black bolsters around a houndstooth centre, which on a classic Porsche interior needs no explanation. Sparco publish a tighter fit range on this seat than on their other recliners, 32 to 36 inch waists and drivers under six foot, so it rewards sitting in one first, and it pairs naturally with the R100 below when the car is shared with a taller driver.

  • From £505.89 inc VAT, Houndstooth edition £682.10
  • 32 to 36 inch waists, drivers under six foot
  • Steel frame, reclining backrest
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Sparco subframe or Planted bracket
  • £568.42 Excl. VAT Add to basket
  • £468.42 Excl. VAT£421.58 Excl. VAT Add to basket

  • From £235.00 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page

The R100 is the recliner we sell more of than any other, and in a 911 it earns its place as the sensible one. It is compact enough for the cabin, the recline knob clears the door card, and Sparco list it for all waist sizes and for drivers both over and under six foot, which makes it the easy recommendation when the car is shared. The flat, open base also means climbing in over a 911’s wide sill is less of a wrestle than it would be with a deep bolstered seat.

  • From £282.00 inc VAT, the cheapest way into this guide
  • All waist sizes, drivers over and under six foot
  • Cloth trim in black, or with blue, grey or red panels
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern, same routes as the GT

Cobra Stuttgart: the one named after the right city

Cobra’s road-first recliner takes its name from Porsche’s home town, and the trim book reads like it was written for this car: basketweave, corduroy, houndstooth or tartan centres against vinyl outers, with silver or anthracite eyelets to finish the retro look properly. It is a compact seat too, 520mm across, with moderate bolsters that keep the climb over the sill easy. Built to order through Cobra’s Signature system, so the centre fabric, piping and stitching are your call.

  • From £619.00 inc VAT, built to order in your trim
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights, 13.2kg, headrest included
  • 800mm tall and 520mm wide, easy in and out
  • Centres in basketweave, corduroy, houndstooth or tartan
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe (to Sept 1984) or Planted bracket
  • From £765.83 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page
  • From £515.83 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page

Cobra Misano: the premium pick

  • From £1,290.83 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page

Our top premium choice, for drivers who want the best seat on the page and intend to cover real miles in it. The Misano is Cobra’s flagship recliner, offered as the Lux and the Anniversary builds through the same Signature trim system as the Stuttgart, and despite being the largest seat here it is also the lightest of the Cobras at 11.5kg. On a 911 that tours as well as tracks, this is the one that makes a 500 mile day feel short, and it is the seat people refuse to get out of in the showroom.

  • Misano Lux from £1549.00 inc VAT, Anniversary from £1649.00
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • 885mm tall and 590mm wide, 11.5kg
  • Signature trim, heating and lumbar options
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern, same routes as the Stuttgart

Corbeau SVR and RRS: one seat, two styles

Corbeau’s two most popular recliners are really one seat with two styling options. The base is the same on both and it is drilled for both bolt patterns, 291mm and 345mm, which makes these the only seats in this guide that fit every frame route on every year of air-cooled 911. The backrest is the choice: the SVR runs a taller, smoother modern back, the RRS the classic sculpted shape that suits an older interior. Both are sold as pairs, one order and both sides of the car are done. If you are over six foot, the RRS also comes in a Low Base version that buys back headroom under a 911’s roofline, so ask about that one when you order.

  • RRS pair £996.00 inc VAT, SVR pair £1020.00
  • Same base, two backrest shapes: smooth SVR or sculpted RRS
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Listed 4 point compatible, heating and trim options available
  • Drilled for both patterns: fits every route on every year

Getting it bolted down

Between seat and frame go the sliding runners, and they follow the same pattern logic as everything else here. Ordering quirks worth knowing on this car: the Sparco subframes and the Planted brackets are listed per side, so a pair of seats means two frames in the basket, and the Sparco frames are handed, so state driver or passenger side when you order. Sparco recommend their own sliding runner kit with their 911 frames, and the Planted listing confirms it works with the car’s original seat belt clip buckle, which on an older 911 saves a job.

One thing on Corbeau’s runner options: the millimetre figure in their listing is the handle width, not a bolt pattern, so pick the option by handle rather than trying to match it to the numbers above. The Retro/Sportline option is the one for these two seats.

Common questions

Which years does this guide cover?

The air-cooled cars, 1966 to 1998, taking in the long-bonnet cars, the G-body, the 964 and the 993. The 996 and everything after use different mountings and different frames, some of which we also stock, so ask us about those rather than working from this page.

Can I put a Cobra seat on the Sparco subframe, or a Sparco seat on the Cobra one?

No. Cobra recliners are drilled at 291mm x 330mm and Sparco recliners at 345mm x 271mm, and the two do not line up. Both makers say their frames are meant for their own seats. The Corbeau SVR and RRS are the exception, drilled for both patterns, and the Planted bracket takes any of these brands with matching runners.

Will I lose my original seat belts?

The Planted listing states the bracket works with the car's original seat belt clip buckle. Whichever route you take, check buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new. If you are planning harnesses instead, every seat in this guide is listed as 4 point compatible, and it is worth telling us when you order so the whole setup works together.

Why are some frames priced per side?

The Sparco subframes and Planted brackets are listed per seat position, with RHD driver and passenger options, and the Sparco frames are handed. A pair of seats means two frames in the basket. The two Cobra subframe listings are priced as listed; if anything on a listing is unclear, ask before ordering.

Would a fixed bucket seat suit my 911 better?

If the car leans towards track use, possibly: a fixed back saves weight and holds harder. We have separate bucket seat guides for the 964 and the 993, and our Cobra retro seats on a 1976 911 post shows the fixed-back retro look on an earlier car. A recliner wins when the car tours as much as it tracks.

What I would actually buy

If it were my money: the GT Houndstooth on the Sparco frame for the car that gets shown as much as driven, because nothing else here looks as right through a 911’s window. The R100 if the budget is going on the engine instead, it does the job for the least outlay and fits almost anyone. And the Misano for the owner who tours, because it is the best seat on this page and a long day in it will prove the point. The Corbeau pair is the answer when you want both sides done in one order, on any year of car, with either backrest style.

Whichever way you lean, start with your build year, then the seat, then the frame route that matches. If you are between two of these seats, or between sizes, get in touch with your height and waist measurement and we will talk it through before you spend anything.
