The E36 has quietly become one of the most common cars on a UK track day, and it is not hard to see why. Rear-wheel drive, light for what it is, and cheap enough to buy that people are happy to actually use it rather than keep it wrapped up in a garage. The trouble is the seats. On a Sedan built any time in the 1990s, the factory cloth has usually gone thin, the bolsters have given up after thirty years of getting in and out, and the seat sits higher than the chassis underneath it deserves.
A fitting frame sorts both problems in one go. Bolt a base-mount recliner to a frame built for this chassis and the seat drops down to where it should have been from the factory, with a driving position that finally matches what the car can do on a circuit.

A frame is the vehicle specific base that bolts to the floor in place of the standard runners, and it sets your final seat height. The E36 uses different floor geometry to the chassis that replaced it in 1998, which is exactly why a car specific frame is worth the money over a universal bracket. Which frame you buy decides which seats you can run, so this choice comes first.

Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern, and on this car two of them matter. Sparco recliners use 345mm x 271mm, which is what the Sparco subframe is built around. Cobra and Recaro seats use different patterns again, 291mm x 330mm and 405mm x 290mm, and neither lines up with the Sparco subframe. The Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, which is why it bolts to the Sparco subframe as well as the Planted bracket. For the Cobra and the Recaro, the Planted bracket with the matching runner is the only route we sell for this car.

The R100 is the seat we fit into more E36s than anything else, and on a car of this age it is usually where people start. It is a compact, honest seat: the recline mechanism is simple, the shell is light, and Sparco list it as suitable for all waist sizes and for drivers over and under six foot. That is a hard combination to find in a base mount recliner, and it is a large part of why the R100 keeps outselling seats that look more serious on paper. On a Sedan there is no door card to work around the way there is on a coupe, so getting in and out stays simple too.
Step up to the R500 and you keep everything that makes the R100 easy to live with, but with a taller backrest and dual density foam in the base and backrest that holds its shape on a longer drive. It comes in fabric or the wipe-clean Sky vinyl, both listed for 32 to 38 inch waists at all heights. Pick this one over the R100 if the car is doing regular track evenings rather than the odd one, and you want more shoulder support without moving up to a full bucket.
The RRS Low Base is the seat to pick if you have not committed to a frame yet, because it is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm and bolts to the Sparco subframe just as readily as the Planted bracket. The Low Base version buys back headroom for taller drivers, which matters more here than people expect once the seat sits lower on a frame than the factory item did. It carries Corbeau’s sculpted backrest shape rather than the smoother SVR profile, worth knowing if you have sat in both before.
The Le Mans is where I point people once track evenings become a regular thing rather than an occasional treat. The bolsters at the shoulder and thigh sit noticeably deeper than either Sparco option, so your body stays put mid-corner and your arms are free to do the steering. It is built to order through Cobra’s Signature range, spacer fabric, vinyl or leather, with heating and lumbar available if you want them, or the Le Mans Heritage brings a period look off the shelf without speccing your own trim. Either way it only goes on with the Planted bracket, since its pattern does not match the Sparco subframe.
BMW owners ask for this seat more than any other we stock, and on an E36 it earns the reputation. The Sportster CS holds the shoulders and thighs firmly without the tight squeeze of a full bucket, so it is as comfortable on the drive there as it is on track. Recaro list it as suitable for all waist sizes and all heights, unusual for a seat with this much support, and the heated version is worth the extra if the car is still doing daily duty through a British winter. It uses a 405mm base mount, wider than either Sparco pattern, so it goes on the Planted bracket with a Recaro-compatible runner rather than the Sparco subframe.
Both frames bolt to the E36’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, since a sport seat often puts the buckle somewhere new. Between seat and frame go the sliding runners, and they follow the same pattern logic as the frames. One thing worth knowing before you order: both frames are listed per side, RHD driver and RHD passenger, so a pair means adding two to the basket.

The E36 covers the 3-Series from December 1990 to April 1998, in coupe, Sedan, touring and convertible bodystyles, and the M3 shares the same floor pattern. If your registration is from May 1998 or later, this frame does not apply to your car and you will need the direct-fit frame built for the newer chassis instead. Check the production date if you are not sure which generation you have.

No. The Sparco subframe is built around the 345mm x 271mm pattern, and the Cobra Le Mans and Recaro Sportster CS use different patterns again. The Corbeau RRS Low Base is the exception, drilled for both 291mm and 345mm. If you want the Cobra or the Recaro, go straight for the Planted bracket with the matching runner.

It depends how the car is used. A reclining seat like the ones above keeps the backrest adjustable and stays comfortable for road use between track days. If the car is dedicated to track or race work and you want the lowest seating position with no compromise on lateral support, a fixed bucket is worth a look instead. Both are listed per seat position, with RHD driver and passenger side options. A pair of seats means two frames in the basket. If anything on a listing is unclear, ask before ordering.
If it were my money: the R100 on the Sparco frame for a road car on a budget, because it does most of the job for the least outlay. The RRS Low Base if you have not settled on a frame yet or you are over six foot, since it keeps both routes open. The Le Mans on the Planted bracket if track evenings are becoming a regular thing and you want the car built around you, in your trim. And if other BMW owners keep telling you to get the Recaro, believe them, the Sportster CS is the seat people keep for years rather than swap out.
