The first M5

BMW Motorsport built the E28 M5 largely by hand, dropping the M1’s straight six into a plain looking saloon. It was the fastest production saloon in the world when it launched and it created the category everything since has competed in.

Values are serious and originality counts. The M535i is the more attainable version and is a fine car in its own right.

Which decides the approach

The bracket picks up the factory mounting points so nothing is cut. E28 interior parts, particularly the sports seats, are worth money on their own and are getting hard to find. Store them and label the fixings.

Practical

E28s rust round the floors and the seams. Get the carpet up and look properly before you spend anything.

A period trimmed shell suits an E28 better than a modern carbon bucket.
