The VR6 is why anyone bothers

Volkswagen’s narrow angle six cylinder, which let them fit a V6 transversely in a hatchback engine bay. It sounds unlike anything else and it made the Mk3 the first Golf that was quick in a straight line rather than merely nimble.

It also makes the car nose heavy, which shows up in a corner and is exactly when a seat that holds you earns its keep.

Which kept prices low for decades and made the Mk3 the cheap way into a Volkswagen build. Good ones are getting harder to find as a result, because so many were used up.
