Datsun 260Z bucket seat guide

S30 chassis, mid-1974 to 1978

Fitting seats to a 260Z is straightforward in every respect except one: the bracket. Planted Technology make two different versions for this car, for two different rear tab configurations, and you cannot tell from the year, the model number, or the chassis plate which one you need. You have to pull up the carpet and look at the tabs the seat bolts to. The good news is that we stock both, and if you photograph the tabs and send us the picture, we will tell you which you have before anything ships.

The two brackets (SB145.1 for angled tabs, SB145 for flat tabs) cover mid-1974 to 1978 and are otherwise identical in price and function. Both cover the same Sparco and OMP pattern and the Cobra pattern, and both are priced at 185.50 pounds per seat. The floor check that matters for all S30 cars is worth repeating here: the floor around the seat mounting is the area rust finds first, so pull the carpet before ordering anything and make sure the floor is solid.

Before you order

The 260Z has two factory rear tab arrangements and Planted Technology list two separate brackets to match them. The split is not published against a year range or a build number because Datsun used both across the production run. The only way to know which you have is to get under the carpet and look at the tabs the original seat bolted to. If they are angled, the bracket is SB145.1 (18078). If they are flat, it is SB145 (18076). Both are the same price and both work with the same seats.

As with all S30 cars, check the floor around the seat mounting before ordering anything. Rust in that area is common and the bracket bolts into the floor. Finding it after the parts arrive is worse than finding it beforehand.

Check the tabs before ordering a bracketPull the carpet back from the driver and passenger seat mounting areas, photograph the rear tabs, and contact us. We will confirm which bracket you need before anything ships. The tabs are angled on some cars and flat on others, and the wrong bracket will not fit correctly.

The fitting kit

Both Planted brackets are 185.50 pounds and cover the same two bolt patterns: 291mm x 330mm (Cobra pattern) and 345mm x 271mm (Sparco and OMP pattern). Planted describe both as compatible with most aftermarket seats on the market. Each bracket is priced per seat, so both seats means ordering twice.

The second route is Sparco FIA steel side mount brackets at 75 pounds. Competition shells that mount from the side (rather than the base) use these with the Planted subframe underneath. It adds height to the seat position, so on a car where the driver is already close to the roof, a base mount seat to the bracket directly is the lower build.

A sliding runner is optional. The Endurance Motorsport kit at 34 pounds is the cheapest way to keep fore-aft adjustment. Cobra premium runners at 70 pounds are available in a 291mm or 405mm handle width. Either can be left out if the seat position is fixed and one person drives the car.

◫

Planted bracket, base mount seat

The direct route. The Planted bracket (SB145.1 or SB145 depending on your tab arrangement) bolts to the factory floor mounting points at 185.50 pounds, and the seat bolts straight to it. Both bracket versions cover the Sparco and OMP pattern and the Cobra pattern, so most base mount seats from those brands work without anything in between.

☰

Planted bracket, side mount brackets, competition shell

The competition route. The Planted bracket goes to the floor as above, then a pair of Sparco FIA steel side mounts (75 pounds) goes between the bracket and the seat. This is the route for fixed-back FIA shells that do not base mount. It adds height, so if headroom is marginal, the base mount build sits lower.

All parts listed are specific to the 260Z or are universal parts that fit the Planted bracket. Confirm which bracket you need before ordering.

Tell us the tab type when you orderIf you send us a photograph of the rear tabs before ordering, we will confirm which bracket to list in the order. It takes five minutes and avoids returning a heavy part.

Bucket seats

The seats that work best in a 260Z are the ones built for a car of this era, and the OMP Classic 1970s Revival at 260 pounds is the one that covers the most people. It is base mount (345mm x 271mm), rated road and track, and listed for all heights and sizes. The Cobra GT3 Historic at 395 pounds and the Cobra Classic 40th Edition at 345 pounds both bolt to the Cobra holes (291mm x 330mm) in the Planted bracket and give a period competition look. Both are rated to under six foot and a 32 to 36 inch waist.

For a lower budget, the Auto Style Type Classic at 165 pounds and the OMP Silverstone Classic at 250 pounds are both base mount and sit at the sensible end of the range. The Cobra Roadster SS at 257.50 pounds splits the difference.

The Sparco Sprint FIA at 210 pounds is the crossover seat: base mount or side mount, all heights, 32 to 36 inch waist, FIA 8855-1999 rated. It works on the Planted bracket directly or with the Sparco side mounts for the competition build.

One practical point from the bracket listing: base mount Sparco, OMP and Corbeau seats all share the 345mm x 271mm pattern, so a Planted bracket drilled to that pattern fits any of the three without adapters. The same bracket also has the 291mm x 330mm Cobra holes, so the choice between brands is genuinely open on a correctly fitted bracket.

💬
Our picks, not the whole listMatch the seat to how the car is used

The OMP Classic 1970s Revival at 260 pounds covers most situations: base mount, all heights, road and track rated, and the right aesthetic for a car of this generation. For a more competition-focused build, the Sparco Sprint FIA at 210 pounds on the Planted bracket with the Sparco side mounts runs a current FIA shell cleanly and works for all heights. The Cobra GT3 Historic at 395 pounds is the pick if the look matters as much as the support and the car is under six foot. Tell Cameron the chassis year, the tab type if you know it, and how the car is used, and he will confirm the right combination for the specific build.

Reclining seats

The 260Z is a car that does road miles as well as track days, and a reclining seat makes that more liveable without giving up the support. Sparco list the R100 at 235 pounds (all heights, all sizes, 345mm x 271mm) and the R100 Martini Racing edition at 291.66 pounds (all heights, 32 to 36 inch waist). The Sparco GT Houndstooth at 568.42 pounds covers all heights and a wider waist range. All three are on the Sparco and OMP pattern in the Planted bracket.

The Corbeau Sportsman at 390 pounds is designed for genuine classic and vintage cars, and the 260Z qualifies. It is listed for both bolt patterns in the Planted bracket (291mm x 330mm and 345mm x 271mm), so it sits on either set of holes. All heights, 32 to 38 inch waist. The Corbeau PSR pair at 465 pounds covers both seats in one order, which works out at around 232 pounds a side.

Cobra reclining seats (Le Mans at 515.83 pounds, Misano Anniversary at 1,374.17 pounds) are on the 291mm x 330mm Cobra pattern and cover all heights and a 32 to 38 inch waist. The Sparco R500 at 274.16 pounds and the Auto Style Type BS5 at 295 pounds round out the base mount options at the lower end of the price range.

Harnesses

The shoulder straps on a 260Z want mounting behind the seat at roughly shoulder height, and there is nothing in the factory S30 bodywork at that point. A harness bar or a roll cage gives the correct mounting. The Safety Devices bolt-in rear cage for the 260Z at 447 pounds is listed with harness bar options and may be used on its own.

On the belts: the Schroth Profi 3×2 at 370.01 pounds and the TRS Magnum 6 Point Superlite at 245 pounds are both FIA 8853-2016 and HANS compatible. The TRS Magnum 4 Point at 205 pounds is FIA 8854-1998, an older standard, so check your regulations before ordering that one for competition use. The Takata Drift II at 229 pounds and Drift III at 270 pounds are road and trackday belts, not FIA rated, and not listed as HANS compatible. The TRS Clubman belts at 80 and 100 pounds are the cheapest option and also not HANS compatible.

On historic events: FIA harnesses carry an expiry date that ends their competition life whether worn or not. For a car of this era at historic events, check whether the series accepts a current FIA belt or requires something period-specific.

💬
Our recommendationsSort the mounting point before the belt

On the 260Z the shoulder mount is the question, not the belt choice. If the Safety Devices rear cage is in the plan, it comes with harness bar options and the belt decision becomes straightforward. Without a cage, a standalone harness bar is the cleaner solution. The TRS Magnum 6 Point Superlite at 245 pounds is the cheapest current FIA belt on this page. The Schroth Profi 3x2 at 370.01 pounds is the better belt. Tell us whether it is track days, competition, or road use, and whether a HANS device is in the build.

Roll cages

Three cages are listed for the 260Z. Two from Custom Cages (CDS weld-in at 1,275.53 pounds and T45 weld-in at 1,607.42 pounds) and one from Safety Devices: a bolt-in rear cage at 447 pounds. Safety Devices do not list a front cage for the 260Z, which means the rear cage is not homologated for competition use in classes requiring a full cage. It can be used on its own for road and track, and harness bar options are available with it.

The Custom Cages options are described as historic spec, built for the 260Z in period trim. The difference between CDS and T45 is the tube material, not the eligibility. If the car is being built for a specific class, tell us what the regulations require.

No Safety Devices USA spec cage is listed for the 260Z specifically, unlike the 240Z where both UK and USA body dimensions are covered. The Custom Cages options are weld-in and listed for road, track and motorsport use.

What fits what

Both Planted brackets cover the same two patterns: 291mm x 330mm (Cobra) and 345mm x 271mm (Sparco and OMP). Seats on either pattern bolt to either bracket version. Confirm which bracket version your car needs before ordering.

Common questions

There are two Planted Technology brackets for the 260Z (mid-1974 to 1978): SB145.1 at 185.50 pounds for cars with angled rear tabs, and SB145 at 185.50 pounds for cars with flat rear tabs. You cannot determine which you need from the year, model, or chassis number. Pull the carpet from the seat mounting area, photograph the rear tabs, and contact us. We will confirm before anything ships.

Get the carpet up from the driver and passenger seat mounting areas and look at the rear tabs the original seats bolt to. If the tabs angle upward, the bracket is SB145.1. If they lie flat, it is SB145. A photograph sent to us via the contact page takes five minutes and removes the guesswork.

Both 260Z bracket versions cover 291mm x 330mm (Cobra pattern) and 345mm x 271mm (Sparco and OMP pattern). Most aftermarket base mount seats from those brands fit without adapters. Base mount Sparco, OMP and Corbeau seats share the 345mm x 271mm pattern, so a bracket drilled to that takes all three.

Yes. The Planted bracket goes to the floor as normal, and a pair of Sparco FIA steel side mount brackets at 75 pounds goes between the bracket and the seat. This is the route for fixed-back FIA shells. It adds height to the seat position, so if headroom is already tight in the car, the base mount build sits lower.

Yes. The Sportsman is designed for genuine classic and vintage cars and the 260Z qualifies. It is listed for both 291mm x 330mm and 345mm x 271mm, so it sits on either set of holes in the Planted bracket. All heights, 32 to 38 inch waist, 390 pounds.

Three: Custom Cages CDS weld-in at 1,275.53 pounds, Custom Cages T45 weld-in at 1,607.42 pounds, and a Safety Devices bolt-in rear cage at 447 pounds. Safety Devices do not list a front cage for the 260Z. The rear cage includes harness bar options and may be used on its own.

The Custom Cages options cover the 260Z specifically and are listed as historic spec. Safety Devices list a 260Z bolt-in rear cage (D004 rear, 447 pounds) but no front cage. The 240Z has Safety Devices listings for both a rear cage and a full 6-point bolt-in, plus USA spec variants. If the car is being built for a specific historic class, tell us what the regulations require.

Behind the seat at roughly shoulder height, and there is nothing in the factory S30 bodywork at that point. A harness bar or roll cage provides the correct mount. The Safety Devices bolt-in rear cage at 447 pounds includes harness bar options and may be used on its own as a mounting solution.

Yes. The S30 floor around the seat mounting area is the first place rust takes hold on these cars, along with the sill areas. Pull the carpet and look before ordering. The bracket bolts into the floor and needs a solid surface. This applies to all S30 cars, whether 240Z, 260Z or 280Z.

No Recaro-specific frame is currently listed for the 260Z in the catalogue. The Recaro Classic Pole Position is a side mount seat, and Recaro sub-frames are brand-specific and will not interchange with the Sparco FIA steel side mount brackets listed for this car. Contact us if you want to explore this further.

More help

The 240Z guide covers the earlier S30 (1969 to mid-1974) and is worth reading alongside this one: the two share most of the same seats but the bracket situation is different, and the 240Z has more Safety Devices cage options. For any fitment question on a specific 260Z, give us the chassis year, the tab type if you know it, and what the seat is for. Cameron works out the right combination for the build.
