Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Volkswagen Scirocco MK2, including our fitting guide

The Mk2 Scirocco spent most of its life as the cheap one. The values started moving a few years ago, and the 16v cars in particular have gone from forgotten to properly sought-after. Most owners at this point want the installation to stay reversible: bolt a fitting frame to the factory mounting points, store the original seats somewhere flat and dry, and the car can go back to stock when you decide to sell it or pass it on. The Planted Technology description for this exact car makes the same point, because it is worth making plainly.

What catches people with the Mk2 is the roofline. It sits you noticeably closer to the headlining than a Golf of the same era, so the backrest height of any seat you choose matters more here than it would on a taller car. That is why the Corbeau SVR leads this list. We stock two fitting routes for the Mk2, a Cobra subframe and a Planted Technology bracket, and the five seats below span everything from an entry-level Corbeau pair to the best recliner Cobra make.

  • Two frame routes in stock for the Scirocco Mk2: Cobra subframe and Planted Technology bracket
  • Cobra subframe includes its own sliding runner in the price, unlike the Planted bracket
  • Low roofline: the Corbeau SVR is the house recommendation for this car
  • Planted bracket opens the 345mm Sparco GT route, which the Cobra subframe does not take

The Scirocco Mk2. The frame you pick decides which of the five seats below can go in it.

The two frame routes into a Scirocco Mk2

We stock a fitting frame for the Mk2 from two of the three brands we rate, and between them they cover every seat in this guide. A frame is the vehicle-specific base that bolts to the floor in place of the standard runners. It sets your final seat height, and on a car with a roofline as low as the Mk2’s that matters more than on most. Which frame you buy decides which seats you can run, so this choice comes first.

291

Cobra subframe

£205.00 inc VAT. The price covers the base frame and the sliding runner, which makes it the most transparent option to price up: the number on the listing is the number you pay. Sold per seat position, so a pair means two in the basket. Cobra ask you to tell them at checkout which seat is going on it, since the frame is made for Cobra seats and correct fitment is not guaranteed with other brands. Takes Cobra recliners (291mm pattern) and the Corbeaus (drilled for both patterns).

ANY

Planted bracket

Part SB427, £222.60 inc VAT a side, with RHD driver and passenger options listed separately. A flat base that takes any seat in this guide, paired with runners matching that seat's bolt pattern. The only route we sell for the Sparco GT on this car, since its 345mm pattern does not line up with the Cobra subframe.

The number that decides it

Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern, and on this car there is one pattern to know and one exception. Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm, which is what the Cobra subframe is built around. The Corbeau SVR and the Corbeau PSR are both drilled for 291mm and 345mm, so they bolt straight to the Cobra subframe as well as the Planted bracket. The Sparco GT uses 345mm x 271mm on its own, which does not line up with the Cobra subframe, making the Planted bracket the only route we sell it on for this car.

Pick the seat firstThen buy the frame route that matches its pattern. Both Corbeaus keep every route open. If you are not yet settled on a seat and want the Sparco GT in the mix, go straight for the Planted bracket. Cameron's job at GSM is working out exactly this combination for a given car and driver, so if you are stuck between two, ask before you order anything.

Corbeau SVR: the low-roof pick

The SVR is the seat we recommend first when the roofline is a concern, and the Mk2 is exactly the kind of car where it earns its keep. It is a lower, shallower backrest than most recliners at this price, which is precisely the point: you sit in it without the top of the seat pushing your head forward. It is drilled for both bolt patterns, 291mm and 345mm, so it goes on the Cobra subframe directly or the Planted bracket with matching runners, and it comes as a matched pair so both sides of the car are done in one order. Vinyl trim standard, heating options available.

  • £1020.00 inc VAT a pair (both seats in one order)
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights suitable
  • Vinyl trim, heating options available
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • Drilled for both patterns: fits the Cobra subframe and the Planted bracket

Cobra Daytona: the value entry into Cobra

The Daytona is the cheapest way onto the Cobra subframe for this car, and it is a hard seat to be the wrong shape for. Cobra list it for all waist sizes across two published ranges and for drivers of any height, which matches what we see: it suits a wide range of drivers in a car that often gets shared. The bolsters at the shoulders and thighs run deeper than the Corbeaus, so your body stays put mid-corner rather than sliding across the base. It is also built to order through Cobra’s Signature range, which means your choice of spacer fabric, vinyl or leather, contrast stitching, heating or lumbar if you want them, rather than off-the-shelf trim.

  • £599.00 inc VAT, built to order in your trim
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights, 13.5kg
  • Signature trim options, optional heating and lumbar
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe or Planted bracket

Sparco GT: the retro pick, Planted only

The GT is Sparco’s retro-shaped recliner, and the one we reach for on classic and period builds because the styling reads as of the era rather than fighting it. On the Mk2 it only fits through the Planted bracket, since the Cobra subframe does not match its 345mm pattern. Sparco publish a narrower fit range on this seat than the rest of the lineup here, 32 to 36 inch waist and under six foot, so it suits a slighter driver best. If a second driver needs the wider range, pair it with one of the Corbeaus. It also comes in the Houndstooth edition (233145, £682.10 inc VAT) for the bespoke retro trim without speccing it yourself.

  • £505.89 inc VAT, Houndstooth edition £682.10
  • 32 to 36 inch waist only, under 6ft only
  • Cloth trim, steel frame construction
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Planted bracket only on this car

Cobra Misano: the best Cobra make

If you want the best reclining seat Cobra produce, this is it. The Misano is Cobra’s flagship recliner, and the one people sit in at the showroom and refuse to get out of. It comes as the Lux and the Anniversary builds, both through the Cobra Signature system, so trim, stitching, heating and lumbar are all available. It is also the lightest of the Cobra seats here despite being the largest, at 11.5kg. The bolsters are deep and the cushioning is where the money went, which makes it the seat to pick if you want the car to feel properly finished rather than modified.

  • £1649.00 inc VAT for the Anniversary build
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights, 11.5kg
  • Signature trim, heating and lumbar options
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe or Planted bracket

Corbeau PSR: the pair that does the job

The PSR is the entry point into Corbeau’s recliner lineup, and it is sold as a pair, which suits the way most buyers approach a car they want to do properly on both sides. It is drilled for both patterns, 291mm and 345mm, so like the SVR it fits either frame route without any extra thought about compatibility. The backrest shape is simpler than the Sportline models above it, but the base structure and the bolt-pattern flexibility are the same. It comes in cloth with trim options, so it can be specced to the interior without spending Misano money.

  • £558.00 inc VAT a pair
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Cloth trim with options available
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • Drilled for both patterns: fits the Cobra subframe and the Planted bracket

Getting it bolted down

Both frames bolt to the Mk2’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new. The Cobra subframe is priced per seat and the Planted bracket is listed per side (RHD driver and passenger separately), so a pair means two of either in the basket. One pricing note: the Cobra subframe includes its own runner in the price, which Sparco and Planted do not, so the runner you need to order separately depends on which route you take and which seat you choose.

A note on the Cobra subframe: tell Cobra at checkout which seat is going on it when you order the frame separately from the seat, since the frame is made to fit Cobra seats directly and fitment with other brands is not guaranteed without that confirmation.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the floor of my Scirocco Mk2?

Not on a standard floor. Both the Cobra subframe and the Planted bracket bolt to the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new.

Can I put the Sparco GT on the Cobra subframe?

No. The Cobra subframe is built around the 291mm x 330mm pattern, and the Sparco GT uses 345mm x 271mm on its own. If you want the GT in the car, go straight for the Planted bracket with the Sparco sliding runner kit.

Will these seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. If you are planning harnesses, tell us when you order and we will make sure the whole setup works together.

Why is the Cobra subframe priced per seat and the Planted bracket priced per side?

The Cobra subframe is sold individually and fits one seat, so a pair means two in the basket. The Planted bracket is listed the same way in practice, with RHD driver and passenger sold separately. If anything on a listing is unclear, ask before ordering.

How do I know which Scirocco generation I have?

The Mk2 covers cars built between 1981 and 1992, the square-edged coupe with the flush-fitting flush windows. If your car is the earlier rounded-nose Mk1 (built 1974 to 1981), see our Scirocco Mk1 reclining guide. If you have the 2008-on hot hatch, see our Scirocco MK3 guide. Neither frame in this guide fits the other generation.

What I would actually buy

If it were my money: the Corbeau PSR pair on the Cobra subframe for anyone who wants both sides of the car done without spending Misano money, because the dual-pattern base keeps every route open and the pair price is straightforward. The Daytona if one side of the car at a time suits the budget better, since it is the cheapest way onto the Cobra frame and it does not require a Signature spec to look good in a Mk2. The SVR pair if the roofline is a concern and you want the problem solved rather than worked around. The Sparco GT on the Planted bracket if the car gets used for what Mk2 Sciroccos were built for and you want the seat to look like it belongs, paired with one of the wider-fit seats for a second driver. And the Misano if you have sat in one and cannot unsit in it, which is a different conversation altogether.

Every combination above bolts to the factory mounting points without drilling. If you are between two seats or between sizes, ring us on 0115 9893488 and we will talk it through before you spend anything.
