Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Volkswagen Golf Mk7, including our fitting guide

The Mk7 Golf is young enough that most owners are not replacing seats because anything has worn out. Even a facelifted GTI on coilovers or a 300-plus horsepower Golf R still leaves the factory with cloth or leather-look buckets built for a showroom, not for what the car does once it has been remapped and lowered. A reclining seat on a fitting frame gives you the support the standard seat was never asked to provide, and it drops your seating position by a useful amount into the bargain.

The Mk7 spans 2012 to 2020 across hatchback and estate, GTI, GTD, R and the plain TSI and TDI cars underneath them, so the fitting frame market for it is properly established by now. Working out which combination of frame, seat and runners suits a given car and driver is most of what Cameron does day to day at GSM.

  • Two frame routes in stock for the Golf Mk7: Cobra and Sparco
  • Cobra frames take 291mm pattern seats, Sparco frames take 345mm
  • Every seat in this guide is listed as 4 point harness compatible
  • Both routes bolt to the factory mounting points, no drilling on a standard floor

The Mk7 R. The frame you pick decides which of the five seats below can go in it.

The two frame routes into a Golf Mk7

We stock a fitting frame for the Mk7 from two of the three brands we rate, and between them they cover every seat in this guide. A frame is the vehicle specific base that bolts to the floor in place of the standard runners, and it sets your final seat height and how far back you can sit. There is no Planted bracket listed for this car, so which of the two frames you buy decides which seats you can run, and that choice comes first.

291

Cobra subframe

Part SU-VW-GO7, £255.00 inc VAT a side, or £510.00 inc VAT for the driver and passenger pair. Pairs with Cobra 291mm runners and takes the Le Mans, the Misano Anniversary and the Corbeau.

345

Sparco subframe

Part 00499070-Golf-Mk7, £93.60 inc VAT a side. Sold individually, RHD driver and passenger listed separately. Pairs with 345mm runners and takes the R100, the R500 and the Corbeau.

The number that decides it

Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern, and there are two that matter on this car. Sparco recliners use 345mm x 271mm, which is what the Sparco subframe is built around. Cobra recliners use a different pattern again, 291mm x 330mm, matched to the Cobra subframe. The Corbeau RRS Low Base is drilled for both, so it bolts straight to either frame. There is no Planted bracket listed for the Mk7, so a seat outside these two patterns has no route we sell for this car.

Pick the seat firstThen buy the frame that matches its pattern. The Corbeau keeps both routes open if you have not settled on a seat yet. Working out that combination for a given car and driver is most of what I do at GSM, so ask if you are stuck between two.

Sparco R100: the everyday value pick

The R100 outsells every other recliner we stock, and on a Mk7 running standard power it does the job without asking much of the budget. It is a compact shell, easy to live with if you are still getting in and out of the car for the school run as well as track days, and Sparco lists it for all waist sizes and both over and under six foot drivers. Choosing it leaves more of the money for the frame, which is usually where it is better spent on a car this common.

  • From £282.00 inc VAT, the cheapest way into this guide
  • All waist sizes, drivers over and under six foot
  • Cloth trim, also available in vinyl
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Sparco subframe only

Sparco R500: more seat, same forgiving shape

The R500 keeps the R100’s easy shape but adds a taller backrest and dual density foam in the base and back, which holds up better once the car is doing regular motorway miles between track days. It comes in fabric or the wipe-clean Sky vinyl, useful if the Mk7 is still on daily duty through a wet winter. Pick it over the R100 if you want more shoulder support without stepping up to a deeper bolstered seat.

  • From £329.00 inc VAT in fabric or £349.00 in Sky vinyl
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Dual density foam in base and backrest
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern, same route as the R100

Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base: keeps every route open

The RRS Low Base earns its place in every guide we write because it is drilled for both patterns, so it goes straight onto the Cobra subframe as easily as the Sparco one. On a Mk7 that still has its factory sunroof, the Low Base cut buys back headroom a standard-height bucket eats into, and Corbeau’s sculpted backrest gives more shoulder support than either Sparco seat above without the Cobra’s built-to-order wait.

  • £498.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Listed 4 point compatible
  • Low Base cut, useful if the car has a sunroof or you are over six foot
  • Drilled for both patterns: fits the Cobra subframe and the Sparco subframe

Cobra Le Mans: the support pick

The Le Mans is the seat I point people at once a Mk7 has had real work done to it, a stage two remap or more, because the bolsters at the shoulder and thigh sit noticeably deeper than anything Sparco makes. Cobra hand trims every seat to order, spacer fabric, vinyl or leather, with contrast stitching, heating or lumbar support if you want them, so the seat can match the rest of the interior rather than just bolting in. The Le Mans Heritage covers the same shape in a ready-specified trim if you would rather not choose your own colours.

  • From £619.00 inc VAT, built to order in your trim
  • Le Mans Heritage from £649.00 inc VAT, ready-specified
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights, 13.4kg
  • Cobra hand trim options, plus optional heating and lumbar
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe only

Cobra Misano Anniversary: the premium pick

The Misano Anniversary is as far as this guide goes, a hybrid seat pairing a steel alloy reclining base with a composite reinforced backrest, trimmed in full Nappa leather with the anniversary diamond stitch pattern across the centre panels. It is the seat for a Mk7 R where the rest of the interior has already had the money spent on it and an R100 would look out of place next to it. Cobra builds every one to order, so allow four to six weeks and expect a call to confirm colour before it ships.

  • From £1,649.00 inc VAT, built to order, allow 4 to 6 weeks
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Nappa leather, diamond stitched centre panels
  • Seat weight 11.5kg, listed 4 point compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe only

Getting it bolted down

Both frames bolt to the Mk7’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive it, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new. Between seat and frame go the sliding runners, and which one you need follows the same pattern logic as the frame itself.

Cobra Le Mans or Misano AnniversaryCobra Premium runners, £84.00 a seatCobra subframe only

The Mk7 covers the Golf from 2012 to 2020, including the facelifted version from 2017 onward, and both frames in this guide are listed against the Mk7 specifically rather than any one trim. If your car is a 2020-on Mk8, neither frame applies and you would need to check separately before ordering.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the floor of my Golf Mk7?

Not on a standard floor. Both frames bolt to the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts properly and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new.

Can I put a Sparco seat on the Cobra subframe, or a Cobra seat on the Sparco subframe?

No. The Sparco subframe is built around the 345mm x 271mm pattern and the Cobra subframe around 291mm x 330mm, and neither seat crosses over. The Corbeau RRS Low Base is the exception, drilled for both, so it bolts to either frame directly.

Will these seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. If you are planning harnesses, tell us when you order and we will make sure the whole setup works together.

Why is the Cobra subframe sold both individually and as a pair?

It is listed per seat position, RHD driver and passenger, so you can order one side on its own or both together as a pair at £510.00 inc VAT. The Sparco subframe is sold individually only, driver and passenger listed separately, with no pair option on the listing.

Would a fixed bucket seat suit my Golf Mk7 better?

A bucket holds you better again once the car is doing serious track work, at the cost of comfort on the road. We have written up fitting a Sparco SPX bucket seat into a Golf Mk7 before, if you want to see what that route looks like. For most road cars that still see the odd track day, a recliner does the job without giving up daily usability.

What I would actually buy

If it were my money: the R100 on the Sparco frame for a Mk7 that is still mostly stock, because it does most of the job for the least outlay. The RRS Low Base if you have not settled on a frame yet or the car has a sunroof eating into your headroom, since it keeps both routes open. The Le Mans on the Cobra subframe once the engine has had real work done and you want a seat that holds you through a corner instead of the door card doing it for you. And if the rest of the interior has already had serious money spent on it, the Misano Anniversary is the one that will not look out of place next to it.

Every combination above uses parts that bolt straight to the Mk7’s factory mounting points. If you are between two of these seats, or between sizes, get in touch with your height and waist measurement and we will talk it through before you spend anything.
