Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Volkswagen Golf Mk5, including our fitting guide

The Mk5 GTI’s tartan cloth seats are one of the more recognisable seats VW has fitted, and the R32 that followed it swapped that for leather buckets with more bolster than most hot hatches got in 2005. Both looked the part when the car was new. Neither one was built to hold a driver in place through a fast corner, and twenty years on the foam has usually gone soft under the bolster stitching long before the rest of the seat gives up. The base sits high too, which the Mk5’s low centre of gravity was never really asking for.

A recliner on the right frame fixes both problems at once. It drops the driving position a couple of inches and gives you a seat built to keep you in place rather than just look sporty, and because we stock a fitting frame for this chassis from three different brands, the seat you end up with is not limited to one option. Cobra, Sparco and Planted Technology frames are all in stock for the Golf Mk5, and which one you buy decides which of the five seats below you can run.

  • Three frame routes in stock for the Golf Mk5: Cobra, Sparco and Planted Technology
  • Cobra frames take 291mm pattern seats, Sparco frames 345mm, Planted takes both, plus the wider 405mm Recaro pattern
  • Every seat in this guide is listed as 4 point harness compatible
  • All three routes bolt to the factory mounting points, no drilling on a standard floor

The three frame routes into a Golf Mk5

We stock a fitting frame for the Golf Mk5 from all three of the brands we rate, which is not true of every car in this series. A frame is the vehicle specific base that bolts to the floor in place of the standard runners, and it is what sets your final seat height. Which one you buy decides which seats you can run, so this choice comes first.

291

Cobra subframe

Part SU-VW-GO5, £255.00 inc VAT, fits one seat. Pairs with Cobra 291mm runners and takes the Le Mans and the Corbeau RRS Low Base.

345

Sparco subframe

Part 00499070-Golf-Mk5, £99.00 inc VAT a side. Sold individually, RHD driver and passenger listed separately. Pairs with 345mm runners and takes the R100, the R500 and the Corbeau RRS Low Base.

ANY

Planted bracket

Part SB029-4887, £222.60 inc VAT a side, RHD driver and passenger. A flat base that takes any seat in this guide, including the wider Recaro, paired with runners matching that seat's pattern.

The number that decides it

Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern, and on this car there are three that matter. Sparco recliners use 345mm x 271mm, which is what the Sparco subframe is built around. Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm, matching the Cobra subframe. Recaro’s Sportster CS is wider again at 405mm x 290mm, and neither the Cobra nor the Sparco subframe is drilled for it, so the Planted bracket with a Recaro-compatible runner is the only route we sell for that seat on this car. The Corbeau RRS Low Base sits in the middle: Corbeau drill it for both 291mm and 345mm, so it bolts to either subframe directly as well as the Planted bracket.

Pick the seat firstThen buy the frame route that matches its pattern. The Corbeau keeps two routes open at once. If the Recaro is the seat you want, go straight for the Planted bracket, since it is the only route we sell it through on this car. My job at GSM is working out exactly this combination for a given car and driver, so if you are stuck between two, ask.

Sparco R100: the everyday value pick

The R100 is the seat most Golf Mk5 owners start with, because it does the job the factory seat should have done without asking for a big spend on the seat itself. It is a compact recliner with a light steel shell and a simple recline mechanism, which leaves more of the budget for the frame and runners than for cushioning you will not notice after the first drive. Sparco list the cloth version as suitable for all waist sizes and for drivers both over and under six foot, a wide spread for a seat at this price. Bolt it to the Sparco subframe or the Planted bracket and the fitment is identical either way.

  • From £282.00 inc VAT, the cheapest way into this guide
  • All waist sizes, drivers over and under six foot
  • Cloth trim, also available in vinyl
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Sparco subframe or Planted bracket

Sparco R500: more support, same easy fit

  • £274.16 Excl. VAT Add to basket
  • £290.83 Excl. VAT Add to basket

The R500 keeps the R100’s open, easy shape but adds a taller backrest and dual density foam through the base and back, which holds its shape better once the Mk5 is doing regular track evenings rather than the odd one. It is listed for 32 to 38 inch waists at all heights, in fabric or the wipe-clean Sky vinyl. Choose this over the R100 if you want more shoulder support for spirited driving but are not ready to move up to a full bucket with side bolsters that need a specific belt line.

  • From £328.99 inc VAT in fabric or £349.00 in Sky vinyl
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Dual density foam in base and backrest
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern, same routes as the R100

Cobra Le Mans: the step-up pick

Step up to the Le Mans and you feel it in the bolsters straight away. Cobra cut them deeper at the shoulders and thighs than either Sparco option, so the seat is doing more of the work of holding you through a corner and your arms are free to steer rather than brace. It is built to order through Cobra’s Signature trim system, spacer fabric, vinyl or leather, with heating and lumbar support available if you want them, and it weighs 13.4kg either way. If a bespoke spec is more decision than you want to make, the Le Mans Heritage ships in a fixed period-look trim instead. On the Golf Mk5 it only goes on the Cobra subframe or the Planted bracket, since its 291mm pattern does not line up with the Sparco frame.

  • £619.00 inc VAT, built to order in your trim
  • Le Mans Heritage at £649.00 inc VAT for the fixed period look
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights, 13.4kg
  • Signature trim options, plus optional heating and lumbar
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe or Planted bracket
  • From £540.83 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page
  • From £515.83 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page

Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base: keeps every route open

  • From £415.00 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page

The RRS Low Base is worth reading about before you have picked a frame, because it is the only seat in this guide drilled for both bolt patterns rather than one. It bolts straight to the Cobra subframe, the Sparco subframe or the Planted bracket without changing which frame you buy, so if you are still deciding between routes, starting here means the seat is not what is holding that up. The Low Base part of the name matters in a Mk5 too: the roofline is not tall, and a lower-set seat buys back headroom a standard-height bucket would eat into. It is trimmed in cloth, leather or vinyl with a choice of stitching colour, and heating and lumbar support are both listed as options.

  • £498.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Listed 4 point compatible
  • Low Base version, useful under a hatchback roofline
  • Drilled for both patterns: fits every frame route on this car

Recaro Sportster CS: the premium pick

The Sportster CS is the seat to want if the Golf Mk5 is still doing daily duty as well as the odd track evening. It holds you firmly through the shoulders and thighs without the aggressive squeeze of a full bucket, so it is as comfortable at motorway speed as it is mid-corner, and Recaro list it as suitable for all waist sizes and all heights, an unusually wide fit for a seat with this much support. The heated version is worth the extra if the car is on the road through a British winter. Its 405mm base is wider than either Sparco or Cobra pattern, so on the Golf Mk5 it only goes on with the Planted bracket and a Recaro-compatible runner, not either subframe.

  • From £1,581.30 inc VAT, £2,154.60 with heating
  • All waist sizes, all heights
  • Leather and suede trim, heated option available
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 405mm x 290mm pattern: Planted bracket with a Recaro-compatible runner only
  • From £1,795.50 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page
  • From £1,317.75 Excl. VAT Select options This product has multiple variants. The options may be chosen on the product page

Getting it bolted down

All three frames bolt to the Golf Mk5’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new. Between seat and frame go the sliding runners, and which one you need follows the seat’s pattern rather than the frame brand.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the floor of my Golf Mk5?

Not on a standard floor. All three frames bolt to the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts properly and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new.

Can I put a Sparco seat on the Cobra subframe, or a Cobra seat on the Sparco one?

No. Sparco recliners are drilled at 345mm x 271mm and Cobra recliners at 291mm x 330mm, and the two do not line up. The Corbeau RRS Low Base is the exception, drilled for both. If you want the Recaro Sportster CS, its 405mm pattern does not match either subframe, so the Planted bracket with a Recaro-compatible runner is the route to buy.

Will these seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. If you are planning harnesses, tell us when you order and we will make sure the whole setup works together.

Would a fixed bucket seat suit my Golf Mk5 better?

A recliner keeps factory-style adjustment and is the easier seat to live with day to day. If you want the deepest possible bolsters and do not mind losing the recline, a bucket is worth a look. We have written up fitting a Bimarco Dakar into a Golf Mk5 before, and the full install is here.

Why is the Cobra frame priced differently to the Sparco and Planted ones?

The Sparco subframe and the Planted bracket are both listed per seat position, with RHD driver and passenger side options, so a pair of seats means two of either in the basket. The Cobra subframe is listed as a single product covering its own fitment. If anything on a listing is unclear, ask before ordering.

What I would actually buy

If it were my money: the R100 on the Sparco frame for a road-focused Mk5 on a budget, because it does most of the job for the least outlay. The RRS Low Base if you have not settled on a frame yet, since it is the only seat here that keeps every route open and buys back headroom under a hatchback roof. The Le Mans on the Cobra frame once track evenings become a regular thing and you want the car built around you, in your trim. And if the Mk5 is still doing daily duty through the week as well as the odd track day, the Sportster CS earns its price, the one seat on this page built to be comfortable at seventy as well as through a corner.

Every combination above uses parts that bolt straight to the Golf Mk5’s factory mounting points. If you are between two of these seats, or between sizes, get in touch with your height and waist measurement and we will talk it through before you spend anything.
