Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Volkswagen Golf Mk2, including our fitting guide

The Mk2 Golf GTI is the one people point to when they talk about VW getting the hot hatch formula right the first time. A clean example is pushing forty years old now, and most have covered a lot of miles before anyone thought about keeping them original. The factory seats, cloth buckets on a GTI, something plainer on lesser trims, have usually gone soft in the bolsters long before the rest of the car gives up, and on a hatch this light and direct, a slack seat undoes half the point of driving it hard.

Two kinds of owner tend to come to us about this. Some are restoring a genuine GTI and want period-correct support without wrecking the interior they have spent years getting right. Others have built theirs up with more power and want a seat that can actually hold them through a corner at that output. Both land on the same answer: a base-mount recliner on a frame built for this chassis.

  • Three frame routes in stock for the Golf Mk2: Cobra, Sparco and Planted Technology
  • Cobra frames take 291mm pattern seats, Sparco frames 345mm, Planted takes both
  • Every seat in this guide is listed as 4 point harness compatible
  • All three routes bolt to the factory mounting points, no drilling on a standard floor

The Mk2 Golf GTI. The frame you pick decides which of the five seats below can go in it.

The three frame routes into a Golf Mk2

The Mk2 is one of the better-supported classics we deal with, because we stock a fitting frame for it from all three of the brands we rate. A frame is the vehicle specific base that bolts to the floor in place of the standard runners, and it is what sets your final seat height. Which one you buy decides which seats you can run, so this choice comes first.

291

Cobra subframe

Part SU-VW-GO2, £205.00 inc VAT. Priced for 1 subframe, fits 1 seat, so a pair means two in the basket. Pairs with Cobra 291mm runners and takes the Daytona, the Misano and the Corbeau.

345

Sparco subframe

Part 00499071-GolfMK2, £86.68 inc VAT a side. Sold individually, RHD driver and passenger listed separately. Pairs with 345mm runners and takes the R100, the GT and the Corbeau.

ANY

Planted bracket

Part SB028-4875, £222.60 inc VAT a side, RHD driver and passenger. A flat base that takes any seat in this guide, paired with runners matching that seat's pattern.

The number that decides it

Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern, and there are only two that matter here. Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm. Sparco recliners use 345mm x 271mm. They do not line up with each other, so a Cobra seat will not go onto a Sparco subframe or the other way round. The exception is Corbeau, who drill their recliners for both patterns, which is why the SVR and the RRS appear in every column below. The Planted bracket sidesteps the whole question by taking any of them, as long as the runners between seat and bracket match the seat.

Pick the seat firstThen buy the frame route that matches its pattern. If you have not settled on a seat yet, the Corbeaus keep every route open, and the Planted bracket keeps every seat open. My job at GSM is working out exactly this combination for a given car and driver, so if you are stuck between two, ask.

Sparco R100: the everyday value pick

The R100 is the seat we sell more of than anything else in this guide, and on a Mk2 that is usually still doing road miles it is the sensible place to start. It is a compact shell, which matters in a cabin this narrow, and the flat, open base makes it easy to get in and out of a two-door. Sparco list it as suitable for all waist sizes and for drivers both over and under six foot, which is a hard combination to find in a base mount recliner at this price, and it leaves most of the budget for the frame rather than the seat itself.

  • From £282.00 inc VAT, the cheapest way into this guide
  • All waist sizes, drivers over and under six foot
  • Cloth trim, also available in vinyl
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Sparco subframe or Planted bracket

Sparco GT: the seat built for a car like this

The GT looks like it belongs in this car, because in spirit it was built for cars from this era. It runs a slimmer, flatter shell than the R100 with a period silhouette that suits a Mk2’s cabin better than a modern bucket does, and the Houndstooth Edition takes that further with the same style of cloth pattern VW put in GTI seats through the eighties and nineties. Sparco publish the standard GT’s fit as 32 to 36 inch waist and under six foot, narrower than most of the seats on this page, so it suits a smaller driver more than someone chasing the widest possible size range. If that is not you, the R100 and the two Cobras either side of it in this guide cover a wider fit.

  • From £505.89 inc VAT, Houndstooth Edition from £682.10
  • Standard GT: 32 to 36 inch waist, under 6ft
  • Houndstooth Edition: wider waist range, all heights suitable
  • Cloth or houndstooth cloth trim, no armrests
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Sparco subframe or Planted bracket

Cobra Daytona: the support pick

The Daytona is the seat to move to once the Mk2 is doing more than the odd trackday, because the bolsters at the shoulders and thighs sit noticeably deeper than either Sparco option here. Your body stays put mid-corner instead of leaning on the door card, which matters more on a car this light and reactive than it would in something heavier. It is built to order through Cobra’s Signature range in spacer fabric, vinyl or leather, with contrast stitching, heating or lumbar support if you want them, or the Tartan Edition ships ready to order in black vinyl with a tartan centre panel, a trim that would not look out of place in a period GTI. Either way it only bolts on with the Cobra subframe or the Planted bracket, since its pattern does not match the Sparco frame.

  • £599.00 inc VAT, built to order in your trim
  • Tartan Edition at £899.00 inc VAT for the ready-made option
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights, 13.5kg
  • Signature trim options, plus optional heating and lumbar
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe or Planted bracket only

Cobra Misano: the premium pick

The Misano is Cobra’s flagship recliner and our premium pick for the Golf Mk2, the seat for someone who has already sat in the others on this page and wants the one built without compromise. It comes as the Lux and the Anniversary builds, both through the same Signature trim system as the Daytona, and despite having the largest shell in this guide the Anniversary is also the lightest seat here at 11.5kg. Most of the money in a Misano goes into the cushioning rather than the bolsters, so it holds you well without the squeeze of a full bucket, and it is the seat people are reluctant to get back out of on the showroom floor.

  • Misano Lux from £1,549.00 inc VAT, Anniversary from £1,649.00
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • 885mm tall, 590mm wide, 11.5kg (Anniversary)
  • Signature trim, heating and lumbar options
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern, same routes as the Daytona

Corbeau SVR and RRS: one seat, two styles

Corbeau’s two most popular recliners are really one seat with two backrest options, and on the Golf Mk2 they are the only seats in this guide that fit every frame route we sell. The base is drilled for both bolt patterns, 291mm and 345mm, so whichever frame ends up in the car, the seat was never the thing holding the decision up. The SVR runs a taller, smoother modern back, the RRS a classic sculpted shape closer to what a period GTI seat looked like, and both come as a pair, one order for both sides of the car. If you have not settled on a frame yet, this is the seat to start from.

  • RRS pair £996.00 inc VAT, SVR pair £1,020.00
  • Same base, two backrest shapes: smooth SVR or sculpted RRS
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Listed 4 point compatible, heating and trim options available
  • Drilled for both patterns: fits every Golf Mk2 frame we sell

Getting it bolted down

All three frames bolt to the Golf Mk2’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive it, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new. Between seat and frame go the sliding runners, and they follow the same pattern logic as the frames themselves. On a car this old, check the floor around the original mounting points for rust before you order anything. A sound frame bolted to a soft floor is not a fix.

The Sparco subframe for the Golf Mk2 is listed for cars built between May 1983 and August 1991, which covers the vast majority of Mk2s we see. If yours is a very late facelift car or you are not sure which build date you fall into, check with us before ordering rather than guessing.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the floor of my Golf Mk2?

Not on a standard floor. All three frames bolt to the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts properly and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new. On a car this age, check the floor around those points for rust before you order anything.

Can I put a Cobra seat on the Sparco subframe, or a Sparco seat on the Cobra one?

No. Cobra recliners are drilled at 291mm x 330mm and Sparco recliners at 345mm x 271mm, and the two do not line up. The Corbeau SVR and RRS are the exception, drilled for both. If you want to keep your options open across brands, the Planted bracket takes any of them with matching runners.

Will these seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. If you are planning harnesses, tell us when you order and we will make sure the whole setup works together.

Why is the Cobra frame priced differently to the Sparco and Planted ones?

The Sparco subframe and the Planted bracket are both listed per seat position, with RHD driver and passenger side options, so a pair of seats means two of either in the basket. The Cobra subframe is a single product priced for one seat with no side option, so a pair means adding it twice as well, just without picking a side first. If anything on a listing is unclear, ask before ordering.

How do I know I have a genuine Mk2, not a Mk1 or Mk3?

The Sparco frame in this guide is listed for Golf Mk2s built between May 1983 and August 1991, which is the full production run before the Mk3 arrived. If your registration date falls outside that window, or you are not sure which generation you have, check the chassis before ordering, since a Mk1 or Mk3 frame is a different part entirely.

What I would actually buy

If it were my money: the R100 on the Sparco frame if the Mk2 is still mostly a road car and the budget is tight, because it does most of the job for the least outlay. The GT if you want a seat that looks like it was built for the car rather than dropped into it, so long as your waist size sits inside its range. The Corbeau pair if you have not settled on a frame yet, since it keeps every route open and does both sides of the car in one order. And if the engine has had real work done to it and you are chasing grip over nostalgia, the Daytona on the Cobra frame is the one to build the car around.

Every combination above uses parts that bolt straight to the Mk2’s factory mounting points. If you are between two of these seats, or between sizes, get in touch with your height and waist measurement and we will talk it through before you spend anything.

Ring 0115 9893488 with the car and whichever way you are leaning, and Cameron will confirm the seat, the frame and the runners as one order before you spend anything. It is a five minute conversation and it saves buying a combination that does not line up.
