Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Rover Montego, including our fitting guide

The Rover Montego ran from 1984 to 1994, and it was always built to a budget. The factory seats were adequate for the era, but adequate for 1984 does not hold up for forty years. Most of them are now flat in the bolsters, gone in the foam, and more or less structural failure under a thin layer of old cloth. What makes this worse than the usual classic car seat problem is that there is almost no aftermarket interior support for the Montego. Original or near-original trim is effectively unobtainable in any quantity.

The Cobra Direct Fit Subframes change the calculation. They bolt to the four factory mounting points in the floor, include the sliding runner in the price, and give you the base for any reclining seat in this guide. Cameron works out the right combination for a given driver and car. This page covers the five recliners he rates for the Montego.

  • One frame route for the Montego: Cobra Direct Fit Subframes at £231.66 inc VAT each
  • Runner included in the frame price, nothing extra to order
  • Every seat in this guide is 4 point harness compatible
  • Original seats can go back: the frame bolts to the same four floor points

The Rover Montego. The Cobra Direct Fit Subframes are the one vehicle-specific fitting route we stock for it.

The frame route into a Rover Montego

We stock one fitting kit for the Montego: the Cobra Direct Fit Subframes. They bolt to the four factory seat mounting points, the runner comes in the price, and any of the five seats in this guide bolts straight on. There is no secondary runner purchase or pattern conversion to work out. One frame per seat position, priced accordingly.

The product page makes a point worth passing on. Montego factory seats are now effectively unobtainable new, and considerably harder to source than the frame is. If you still have the originals, keep them somewhere flat and dry before fitting the sport seat. It is unusual for a fitting kit to include that kind of note, but for a car this age it is the right advice.

291

Cobra Direct Fit Subframes

Part COBTYH0J327, £231.66 inc VAT each. Runner included in the price. Takes Cobra 291mm pattern seats and Corbeau dual-pattern seats. Bolts to the factory mounting points with no floor modification. Priced per seat position.

The number that decides it

Every seat in this guide uses the 291mm bolt pattern, and the Cobra Direct Fit Subframes are built around that spacing. The Corbeau Sportsman and the RRS Low Base are both drilled at 291mm, same as the three Cobra seats. There is no routing choice to make on this car, which is less complicated than a multi-brand fitting setup and makes the ordering straightforward.

All five fit the same frameEvery seat in this guide goes on the Cobra Direct Fit Subframes. The frame choice is about your budget and your timeline. The Le Mans Heritage needs 4 to 6 weeks; the other four ship from stock. If you are not certain which seat to go for, talk it through with Cameron before ordering.

Corbeau Sportsman: the classic car choice

The Sportsman is the one Corbeau makes specifically for vintage and classic use. The profile is lower and less aggressively bolstered than the sports-seat norm, the backrest sits more upright than a track seat would, and the whole thing reads as a period-correct upgrade rather than a transplant from a different decade. It suits the Montego’s cabin in a way that a deep-bolstered rally-spec seat never quite would. Cloth, vinyl or leather at order, and Cameron tends to put people in the cloth for a classic that still does miles, because it breathes better and wears in rather than wearing out.

Driver size and fitment. The Sportsman is listed for waists from 32 to 36 inch and 36 to 38 inch, and Corbeau rate it for all heights. The low overall height gives back headroom the original seat was eating, which is noticeable in the Montego’s cabin. If you sit at the outer edge of either waist band, get the measurement across the hips and ask us before ordering.

  • From £468.00 inc VAT
  • Waist 32 to 38 inch, all heights
  • Cloth, vinyl or leather trim at order
  • 4 point harness compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm bolt pattern, straight onto the Cobra frame

Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base: more support, same height advantage

If you want more shoulder hold than the Sportsman offers, the RRS Low Base is the next step. The sculpted shoulder bolsters grip more firmly in a corner, the backrest has Corbeau’s classic close-fitting shape, and the integrated headrest means you are not bolting anything on separately. The Low Base version sits lower than the standard RRS, which in the Montego’s cabin matters: it gives back headroom without you having to check the roofline every time you pull on a helmet. A heated insert and an inflatable lumbar support are both available as add-ons at order if the car still does winter use.

Driver size and fitment. Corbeau rate the RRS Low Base for waists from 32 to 38 inch and all heights. The Low Base cut is worth choosing over the standard RRS if you are over six foot. The heated insert adds a small amount to the base thickness, which is worth knowing if headroom is tight.

  • £498.00 inc VAT
  • Waist 32 to 38 inch, all heights
  • Integrated headrest
  • Optional heated insert and inflatable lumbar support
  • 4 point harness compatible
  • Drilled for 291mm and 345mm: fits via the 291mm holes on the Cobra frame

Cobra Daytona: the all-round Cobra

The Daytona is where most people land when they want a Cobra recliner without going to made-to-order. It is a full sports seat rather than a period-specific design, so it reads differently in the cabin to the Sportsman, but it does more work. The shoulder bolsters hold you through a corner, the base is firm without being uncomfortable on a longer run, and the trim options run from plain spacer fabric through vinyl to full leather. At 865mm tall it is the biggest seat in this guide, which suits the Montego because the cabin height is not a problem in a saloon of this size. Optional heating and lumbar support are available at order.

Driver size and fitment. Cobra rate the Daytona for waists from 32 to 38 inch and for all heights. At 580mm wide and a 530mm base, it is the broadest seat in the guide. If you are a larger driver who wants the most interior room of the five, this is the one to consider. Specify trim at order: spacer fabric ships fastest, bespoke combinations are made to order on a standard Cobra lead time.

  • From £599.00 inc VAT
  • Waist 32 to 38 inch, all heights, 13.5 kg
  • Spacer fabric, vinyl or leather trim options
  • Optional heating and lumbar support
  • 4 point harness compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern, straight onto the Cobra frame

Cobra Stuttgart Vinyl: period character in a sports seat

The Stuttgart in vinyl trim is the seat that looks right in a Montego interior without trying too hard. Standard black vinyl is tidy and holds up well in a car that may not have the most controlled environment, and the Houndstooth or Tartan centre options lean into the period character of the car in a way that works naturally against a late-1980s dashboard. At 800mm tall and 520mm wide it is more compact than the Daytona, which suits the Montego’s cabin proportions better. A headrest comes in the price, and the eyelet finish can be specified in anthracite or silver.

Driver size and fitment. Cobra rate the Stuttgart Vinyl for waists from 32 to 38 inch and all heights. At 13.2 kg it is the lightest of the three Cobra seats in the guide. The 500mm base width is the most compact base here, which gives more legroom in a cabin where the original seat was not exactly generous with it. If you are between the Stuttgart and the Daytona, the Stuttgart is the better choice where cabin space is tight.

  • From £619.00 inc VAT
  • Waist 32 to 38 inch, all heights, 13.2 kg
  • Headrest included
  • Vinyl trim: plain, Basketweave, Corduroy, Houndstooth or Tartan centre
  • 4 point harness compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern, straight onto the Cobra frame

Cobra Le Mans Heritage: made to order, leather available

The Le Mans Heritage is the one seat in this guide that is made to order, and that 4 to 6 week lead time is the main thing to weigh. If you want leather trim, specific colour combinations, or contrast stitching from Cobra’s range without going to a trimmer, this is where you get them. At 820mm tall and 540mm wide it sits between the Daytona and the Stuttgart in size. The open back design has no integral headrest, which is a different look to the Stuttgart, and the various vinyl and leather configurations let you match the seat to whatever else is going on in the interior.

Driver size and fitment. Cobra rate the Le Mans Heritage for waists from 32 to 38 inch and for all heights. At 13.4 kg it is close in weight to the Daytona. The lead time is firm: Cobra manufacture it when you order. If you need a seat fitted quickly, the Stuttgart Vinyl or the Corbeau Sportsman are both in stock and ship without a wait.

  • From £649.00 inc VAT, made to order, allow 4 to 6 weeks
  • Waist 32 to 38 inch, all heights, 13.4 kg
  • Vinyl or leather trim, contrast stitching options
  • 4 point harness compatible
  • No headrest (open back)
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern, straight onto the Cobra frame

Getting it bolted down

The Cobra Direct Fit Subframes include the sliding runner, so there is nothing extra to source between the frame and any of the five seats in this guide. Every seat uses the 291mm bolt pattern, which is what the frame is built for. Bolt the frame to the four factory floor points, bolt the seat to the runner. Torque the floor bolts correctly and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often puts the buckle somewhere different to where the original sat.

The frame is priced per seat position, so two seats means two frames in the basket. If you are only fitting the driver seat to begin with, that is one frame. Both sides use the same part number.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the floor of my Rover Montego?

No. The Cobra Direct Fit Subframes bolt to the four existing factory seat mounting points. There is no modification to the floor on a standard Montego.

Is the sliding runner included in the frame price?

Yes. The Cobra Direct Fit Subframes for the Montego include the runner in the listed price. There is nothing extra to order between frame and seat for any of the five picks in this guide.

Can the original Montego seats go back in once I have fitted a sport seat?

Yes. The sport seat and the original seat bolt to the same four floor points, so putting the original back is straightforward if you ever want to. The Cobra product page specifically mentions keeping the originals, because Montego factory interior parts are now more or less unobtainable new.

Which seat is best for a larger driver?

The Cobra Daytona at 580mm wide is the broadest seat in this guide. All five are rated for up to 38 inch waist. If you sit at the outer edge of that range, get the hip measurement and ask Cameron before committing to any of them.

The Cobra Le Mans Heritage has a 4 to 6 week lead time. Is there a faster alternative?

Yes. The Corbeau Sportsman, the Corbeau RRS Low Base, the Cobra Daytona and the Cobra Stuttgart Vinyl all ship from stock. The Le Mans Heritage is the only made-to-order seat in this guide. If you need a seat fitted quickly, the Stuttgart Vinyl is probably the closest in character.

What I would actually buy

If this is a Montego you are keeping in good order and using regularly, the Corbeau Sportsman is the obvious starting point. It was designed for exactly this generation of car, the proportions read naturally in the cabin, and at entry price it leaves budget for the two frames and a bit of change. If you want more shoulder hold for the odd club event, the RRS Low Base is not much more money and buys considerably more bolster grip.

If you want a Cobra in here, the Stuttgart Vinyl in Houndstooth or Tartan trim is the one Cameron would go for. It sits lower than the Daytona, which suits the Montego better, and it is in stock without a wait. The Le Mans Heritage is the right seat if you want leather to your own spec, but factor in those six weeks. Whatever you go for, ring us before you commit if you are working through dimensions or between two options. The showroom number is 0115 9893488.
