Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Porsche 996, including our fitting guide

The 996 is the 911 people actually drive. It was the car that dropped the air-cooled engine, borrowed its front end from the Boxster and got argued over by purists for most of two decades, and it is also the reason a six figure sum stopped being the entry price for 911 ownership. Values have moved on since, but the 996 has stayed what it always was: a proper daily 911 rather than a car kept under a cover, and a growing number of owners are taking that usability onto a circuit rather than just a B road.

The factory seat was built for that first job, motorway miles between the UK and the Nurburgring in electric comfort, not for holding you still through a fast direction change twenty years later once the bolsters have gone soft. We stock two fitting frame routes for the 996, a Cobra direct fit subframe and a Planted Technology bracket, and between them they cover a proper spread of reclining seats without any guesswork about what actually bolts in.

  • Two frame routes in stock for the 996: a Cobra direct fit subframe and a Planted Technology bracket
  • Cobra frames take 291mm pattern seats direct, Planted takes any pattern with a matching runner
  • Every seat in this guide is listed as 4 point harness compatible
  • Both routes bolt to the factory mounting points, no drilling on a standard floor

The 996. The frame you pick decides which of the five seats below can go in it.

The two frame routes into a Porsche 996

We stock a fitting frame for the 996 from two brands, and between them they cover every seat in this guide. A frame is the vehicle-specific base that bolts to the floor in place of the standard runners, and it sets your final seat height. There is no Sparco subframe listed for this chassis, so a Sparco seat only reaches the car through the Planted bracket. Which frame you buy decides which seats you can run, so this choice comes first.

291

Cobra subframe

Part Cob-Porsche-996, £255.00 inc VAT, priced for one subframe and fits one seat. Cobra recommend using it only with Cobra-brand seats for a guaranteed fit, and ask you to confirm which seat is going on it at checkout. Takes the Daytona, the Le Mans and the Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base.

ANY

Planted bracket

Part SB017, £222.60 inc VAT a side, RHD driver and passenger. Listed under a shared bracket that also covers the Boxster, 997, Cayman and 991, so it takes any seat in this guide paired with the right runner.

The number that decides it

Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern, and on this car there are three that matter. Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm, which is what the Cobra subframe is built around, and it is not compatible with a seat made by anyone else without adaptors. Sparco recliners use a different pattern again, 345mm x 271mm, and there is no Sparco subframe for the 996, so that seat only goes on with the Planted bracket. The Recaro Sportster CS uses its own wider 405mm x 290mm pattern, also Planted-only on this car. The Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, which is why it bolts straight to the Cobra subframe as well as the Planted bracket.

Pick the seat firstThen buy the frame route that matches its pattern. The Corbeau keeps both routes open. If you already know you want the Sparco or the Recaro, go straight for the Planted bracket. My job at GSM is working out exactly this combination for a given car and driver, so if you are stuck between two, ask.

Cobra Daytona: the everyday value pick

The Daytona is where most 996 owners start, and on the car’s own Cobra subframe it is about as straightforward as this upgrade gets: same brand seat, same brand frame, no pattern to double check. The bolsters at the shoulders and thighs sit deeper than a factory 996 seat ever did, so your body stays put mid-corner without the seat feeling like a cage to climb into for a road trip. It is built to order through Cobra’s Signature range, so trim, stitching, heating and lumbar are all yours to choose rather than fixed.

  • £599.00 inc VAT, built to order in your trim
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights, 13.5kg
  • Signature trim options, plus optional heating and lumbar
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe direct, or Planted bracket

Sparco R100: the cheapest way in

The R100 is the recliner we sell more of than any other, and it undercuts everything else in this guide on price. It is a compact seat, the recline knob clears the door card in a car this narrow through the cabin, and the open flat base keeps getting in and out easy, which matters more on a coupe you actually use than it sounds. Sparco list it as suitable for all waist sizes and for drivers both over and under six foot, an unusually wide fit for the money. There is no Sparco subframe for the 996, so this one goes on with the Planted bracket rather than a direct fit.

  • From £282.00 inc VAT, the cheapest way into this guide
  • All waist sizes, drivers over and under six foot
  • Cloth trim, also available in vinyl
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Planted bracket only on this car

Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base: keeps every route open

The RRS Low Base is the seat to pick if you have not settled on a frame yet, or if you want the extra headroom the Low Base version buys back under a coupe roofline. It is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, so it bolts straight to the Cobra subframe as easily as it does the Planted bracket, the only seat in this guide that keeps both routes genuinely open. The backrest is Corbeau’s sculpted shape rather than the smoother SVR profile, worth knowing if you have sat in both before deciding.

  • £498.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Listed 4 point compatible
  • Low Base version, useful for headroom under a coupe roofline
  • Drilled for both patterns: fits the Cobra subframe and the Planted bracket

Recaro Sportster CS: the premium all-rounder

The Sportster CS holds you through the shoulders and thighs without the aggressive squeeze of a full bucket, so it stays comfortable on the drive to the circuit as well as on it, which suits a car that is still someone’s daily 911 as often as it is a trackday toy. Recaro list it as suitable for all waist sizes and all heights, rare for a seat with this much support, and the heated version is worth the extra if the 996 is still doing winter miles. It is a 405mm base mount, wider than either Cobra pattern, so it goes on the Planted bracket with a Recaro-compatible runner rather than the Cobra subframe.

  • From £1,581.30 inc VAT, £2,154.60 with heating
  • All waist sizes, all heights
  • Leather and suede trim, heated option available
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 405mm x 290mm pattern: Planted bracket with a Recaro-compatible runner

Cobra Le Mans: the support pick

The Le Mans is the seat I point people at once a 996 starts doing more track days than road miles. Its bolsters sit deeper again than the Daytona’s, so your arms are free to steer instead of holding you in place under load, and like the Daytona it bolts straight to the car’s own Cobra subframe with nothing to double check on pattern. It is built to order through the Signature range in spacer fabric, vinyl or leather, or the Le Mans Heritage brings a period-correct look off the shelf if you would rather not spec your own trim.

  • £619.00 inc VAT, built to order in your trim, or £649.00 in the Heritage trim
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights, 13.4kg
  • Signature trim options, plus optional heating and lumbar
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe direct, or Planted bracket

Getting it bolted down

Both frames bolt to the 996’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new. Between seat and frame go the sliding runners, and they follow the same pattern logic as the frames. The Cobra subframe is priced per seat and the Planted bracket per side, so a pair of seats means adding the frame to the basket twice either way.

The 996 covers the 911 built from 1997 to 2004, in Carrera, Carrera 4, Turbo, GT2 and GT3 form, before the 997 replaced it. Both frames in this guide are listed for the 996 generally, so if you are on a Turbo or GT3 with a different factory floor, tell us the exact spec when you order and we will confirm fitment before it ships.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the floor of my 996?

Not on a standard floor. Both frames bolt to the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts properly and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new.

Can I put a Sparco or Recaro seat on the Cobra subframe?

No. The Cobra subframe is built around the 291mm x 330mm pattern and Cobra recommend using it only with Cobra seats for a guaranteed fit. The Sparco R100 and the Recaro Sportster CS use different patterns again, so both only reach this car through the Planted bracket. The Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base is the exception, drilled for both 291mm and 345mm.

Will these seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. If you are planning harnesses, tell us when you order and we will make sure the whole setup works together.

Why is the Cobra frame priced per seat and the Planted bracket per side?

The Cobra subframe is sold as one unit that fits one seat, and Cobra ask you to confirm which seat is going on it at checkout so fitment is correct. The Planted bracket is listed with RHD driver and passenger side options. Either way, a pair of seats means two frames in the basket. If anything on a listing is unclear, ask before ordering.

Is this the same as your classic Porsche 911 guide?

No. Our classic Porsche 911 guide covers the air-cooled cars built from 1966 to 1998, where a period-correct seat like the Corbeau Sportsman genuinely suits the car. The 996 is water-cooled, ran to 2004, and gets used as a daily 911 far more than it sits under a cover, so we have not put the Sportsman in this guide. The five seats above are the ones we think actually suit how a 996 gets driven now.

What I would actually buy

If it were my money: the Daytona on the Cobra subframe for most road-and-occasional-track 996s, because it is the straightforward same-brand fit and it does most of the job for sensible money. The R100 if the budget is going on the frame and the seat is a later upgrade. The RRS Low Base if you have not decided on a frame yet or you want the extra headroom under the roofline, since it keeps both routes open. The Sportster CS if the car is still doing daily duty as much as track days and you want the best all-round support seat in the lineup. And the Le Mans once track days start outweighing road miles and you want the bolstering to match, still on the car’s own subframe.

Every combination above uses parts that bolt straight to the 996’s factory mounting points. If you are between two of these seats, or between sizes, get in touch with your height and waist measurement and we will talk it through before you spend anything.
