Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Mini R56, including our fitting guide

The R56 has a cult following on track days, and that is part of why finding it a seat is such a common question at GSM. The factory buckets sit high to clear the transmission tunnel and the wheel arches, and on a car this size that eats into headroom you did not have much of to start with. Owners running a Cooper S or a JCW hard through a circuit tend to notice the standard seat moving under them well before the front tyres do.

We sell two direct fit frame routes for the R56, from Sparco and Recaro, and each one drops the seat onto the factory floor points without any cutting or drilling. Which frame you buy settles which seat you can run, so read the fitting section before you pick a seat rather than after.

  • Two frame routes in stock for the R56: Sparco and Recaro
  • Sparco's frame takes Sparco, OMP and Corbeau base mount seats on 345mm
  • The Recaro frame is a direct fit for the Sportster CS, no separate bracket needed

The two frame routes into a Mini R56

We stock a fitting frame for the R56 from three of the brands we rate, and between them they cover every seat in this guide. A frame is the vehicle specific base that bolts to the factory floor mounting points in place of the standard runners, and it sets your final seat height and how far back you can sit. Get the frame right first and the seat swap is straightforward from there.

345

Sparco subframe

Part 00499038-1, £81.20 inc VAT a side. Sold individually, RHD driver and passenger listed separately. Takes Sparco, OMP and Corbeau base mount seats. Sliding runners are a separate order if you want fore-aft adjustment.

405

Recaro subframe

Part 689529-X2, £562.50 inc VAT, listed as the pair rather than per side. A direct fit for the Recaro Sportster CS, no universal bracket or adapter needed.

The number that decides it

Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern, and on the R56 there are two that matter. Sparco recliners use 345mm x 271mm, which is what the Sparco subframe is built around, and Sparco list the same frame as compatible with Corbeau and OMP base mount seats. Both Corbeaus here are drilled for 291mm and 345mm, so the 345mm holes put the RRS Low Base and the SVR on that same Sparco frame. The Recaro Sportster CS runs 405mm x 290mm and bolts straight to the Recaro subframe, which is a direct fit rather than a universal bracket.

Pick the seat firstThen buy the frame route that matches it. Four of the five seats here run on the Sparco frame, so on this car that is the one that does most of the work. If you are stuck between two of these, that is exactly the kind of thing I sort out for people all day, so ask.

Sparco R100: the sensible way in

The R100 is the seat we sell the most of into an R56, and on a car of this size that usually comes down to space. It is a compact shell, the recline lever sits clear of the door card even in the tight cabin of a three door, and it leaves more of the budget for the frame. Sparco list it as suitable for all waist sizes and for drivers both over and under six foot, which is unusual for a seat this size and matches what we see across the counter. The open base makes getting in and out of a low two door easier than a seat with a full leg bolster.

  • From £282.00 inc VAT, cloth or vinyl
  • All waist sizes, drivers over and under six foot
  • Cloth as standard, vinyl option available
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Sparco subframe only on this car

Sparco R500: more seat, same route

The R500 is the step up from the R100 without leaving the Sparco route. Taller backrest, more shoulder support, and dual density foam in the base and backrest that holds its shape better than the R100 on a long run to a track day. It comes in cloth or Sparco’s Sky vinyl, and either way it uses the same 345mm pattern as the R100, so if you are not sure which of the two you want, the Sparco subframe keeps that decision open until later.

  • From £274.16 inc VAT in fabric or £290.83 in Sky vinyl
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Dual density foam in base and backrest
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Sparco subframe only on this car

Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base: the pick for taller drivers

The RRS Low Base earns its place here for drivers over six foot who find the roofline of a Mini tight before a bucket seat is even involved. The Low Base version buys back headroom compared to the standard RRS, and it is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm patterns, so it goes on the Sparco subframe. The backrest is the more relaxed of the two Corbeaus on this page. If you want holding through the sides more than you want headroom, read the SVR section below and then decide.

  • From £415.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Listed 4 point compatible
  • Low Base version, useful headroom for taller drivers
  • 291mm or 345mm pattern: confirmed route is the Sparco subframe on this car

Corbeau SVR: the support pick

The SVR is the most sculpted of the Sportline recliners through the sides, and that is the reason it goes in an R56. The car is light and it changes direction fast, so the seat has to hold you while the chassis does the work, and the SVR holds you further round the ribs than either Sparco does. It still reclines and it still tilts forward for the back seats, so nothing about the car gets harder to live with. Black vinyl, black stitching, integrated headrest, steel frame. It is the seat we sell most of out of the Corbeau recliners, which is the honest reason it is on this page and the Cobra is not.

  • £1,020.00 inc VAT for the PAIR, which is how Corbeau sell the SVR
  • Heated pair from £1,248.00 inc VAT, loom and switch separate
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Reclines and tilts forward, so the back seats stay usable
  • 291mm x 330mm or 345mm x 271mm: the Sparco subframe on this car

Recaro Sportster CS: the one people keep asking for

Recaro’s Sportster CS comes up constantly with BMW owners, and with Mini being a BMW-built car it is no surprise the same seat gets asked about here too. It holds you through the shoulders and thighs without the aggressive squeeze of a full bucket, so it stays comfortable on the drive there as well as on the circuit. Recaro list it as suitable for all waist sizes and all heights, which is unusual for a seat with this much support, and the heated version is worth the extra if the R56 is still doing daily duty through a British winter. The best part for this car is that it bolts straight to a Recaro-branded direct fit frame rather than needing a universal bracket and a separate runner.

  • From £1,317.75 inc VAT, from £1,795.50 with heating
  • All waist sizes, all heights
  • Leather and suede trim, heated option available
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 405mm x 290mm pattern: direct fit Recaro subframe

Getting it bolted down

Both frames bolt to the R56’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts to spec and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive it, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new. The Sparco and Recaro routes both need runners ordered separately if you want fore and aft adjustment on top of the frame.

The R56 covers the Mini hatch from 2006 to 2013, Cooper, Cooper S and JCW. The earlier R53 runs up to 2006 and uses a different Sparco frame, not the one in this guide, so check your car’s build date if you are not certain which generation you have.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the floor of my R56?

Not on a standard floor. Both frames bolt to the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts to spec and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new.

Can I put the Recaro on the Sparco subframe?

No. The Sparco subframe is built around the 345mm x 271mm pattern and the Recaro Sportster CS is 405mm x 290mm, so it needs its own direct fit frame. Both Corbeaus are drilled for 291mm and 345mm, and it is the 345mm holes that put them on the Sparco frame.

Will these seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. If you are planning harnesses, tell us when you order and we will make sure the whole setup works together.

Why is the Recaro frame priced differently to the Sparco frame?

Sparco list their R56 frame per side, so a pair means two in the basket. The Recaro frame is listed as the pair already, both sides in one order, which is why the price looks higher against it at first glance.

Would a fixed bucket seat suit my R56 better?

If a reclining seat trades away more support than you want, we have also covered the widest bucket seats that fit the Mini Cooper R56, which goes through the fixed-back options and the width limits of the R56's cabin.

What I would actually buy

If it were my money: the R100 on the Sparco frame for a road car on a normal budget, because it does most of the job for the least outlay and leaves the R500 as a later upgrade on the same frame. The RRS Low Base if you are over six foot, since the standard roofline leaves little to spare once a seat goes in. The SVR pair on the Sparco frame if track days are a regular thing, because it is the one that holds you properly and it is still a seat you can live with on a Tuesday. And if you keep hearing Recaro from other BMW and Mini owners, they are not wrong, the Sportster CS is the one people hang onto rather than swap out a year later.

Every combination above bolts straight to the R56’s factory mounting points, no drilling. If you are between two of these, or between sizes, send us your height and waist and we will talk it through before you spend anything.
