Space is not a consideration here, it is the entire problem. There is very little between the door card and the centre console and a wide shell simply will not go in at any price.

The Tridion cell

Worth knowing: the visible steel safety cell that Smart made a feature of is the structure, and the coloured panels hang off it. That is what the seat load ultimately feeds into, and it is a good reason not to improvise anything.

Why people do it

Weight, mostly. A Fortwo weighs almost nothing, so a heavy steel framed shell gives back a real slice of that. Ask us about the lighter GRP and composite options.
