It is one of the most complicated cars of its era

The VR-4 has four wheel drive, four wheel steering, active aerodynamics and electronically controlled suspension, all in 1991. That complexity is why they were cheap for two decades and why the good ones are now appreciating: the survivors are the ones somebody kept on top of.

Weight is the honest problem

A VR-4 is around 1,700kg, which is a great deal for a two door coupe. Nobody is fitting a shell to save weight, and it would barely register. What changes is that you stop sliding about, which in a heavy car with this much grip happens sooner than you would expect.
