Datsun 240Z bucket seat guide
S30 chassis, 1969 to 1974
The S30 is worth more than the last time most people looked at the price. A clean early car in good condition can fetch real money now, and that changes what the fitting job looks like. Planted Technology make a bracket specifically for the 240Z, SB138 at 185.50 pounds, that picks up the factory floor mounting points without cutting anything. Store the original seats and every fixing somewhere dry, labelled, because a matching numbers S30 is not the car to modify in ways you cannot undo.
There is a practical check to do before any of this. The Planted listing says it plainly: rust is the standing S30 problem, and the floor around the seat mounting is one of the areas it shows up. Pull up the carpet and look properly before spending anything. The brackets bolt into the floor and the floor needs to be solid. Get that confirmed first, then come back to the rest of this page.
- Planted Technology SB138 seat bracket at 185.50 pounds, specific to the Nissan and Datsun 240Z 1970 to mid-1974, picks up factory floor mounting points, nothing cut
- The bracket covers 291mm x 330mm (Cobra) and 345mm x 271mm (Sparco and OMP) and is described by Planted as compatible with most aftermarket seats on the market
- Sparco FIA steel side mount brackets at 75 pounds are the alternative route for competition shells that mount from the side rather than the base
- Six roll cages listed for the 240Z S30: two from Custom Cages in CDS or T45, and four from Safety Devices in both UK and USA spec
- Safety Devices bolt-in rear cage at 447 pounds is the starting point if all you need is a proper harness mounting point
- The Corbeau Sportsman at 390 pounds is listed for classic and vintage cars and fits on the Planted bracket against the 291mm x 330mm or 345mm x 271mm pattern
- Check the floor around the seat mountings for rust before ordering anything: it is the one area the Planted listing specifically flags on this car
Before you remove the seats
The 240Z is an S30 platform car, which means the floor around the seat mounting and the sill areas are the first places rust finds a hold. The Planted bracket listing flags it directly: get under the carpet and look at the floor properly before you spend anything on brackets or seats, because the parts bolt into the floor and the floor has to be solid.
If the floors are good: the Planted SB138 bracket (185.50 pounds, part number SB138) picks up the factory mounting points. Nothing is drilled, nothing is cut. When you remove the original seats, keep them and every bolt and washer. A matching numbers S30 with factory seats still in the garage is worth more than one without, and the job is reversible if you keep the parts.
Check the floor firstRust around the seat mounting points is common on the S30. Pull up the carpet and check before ordering anything. A solid floor is not a given on a car this age, and it is better to find out before the seats arrive than after.
The fitting kit
Planted Technology list a bracket specifically for this car at 185.50 pounds (SB138). The bracket publishes holes for 291mm x 330mm (the Cobra pattern) and 345mm x 271mm (the Sparco and OMP pattern), and Planted describe it as compatible with most aftermarket seats on the market. That covers Sparco, OMP, Cobra and Corbeau base mount seats without adapters. The bracket is priced per seat, so both seats means ordering twice.
The Planted listing does flag one detail worth knowing: they list the 240Z twice (this bracket and SB138-1). Either listing gets you the right bracket. If you want certainty before ordering, give them the chassis number and they will confirm against it.
The second route is Sparco FIA steel side mount brackets at 75 pounds. A competition shell that mounts from the side (rather than the base) bolts to the side mounts, and the side mounts bolt to the Planted subframe. This is the route if the car is being built with a fixed back FIA shell rather than a reclining seat or a base mount bucket.
Add a sliding runner if you want to keep the fore-aft adjustment. The Endurance Motorsport kit at 34 pounds is the cheapest option. Cobra premium runners at 70 pounds are available in a 291mm or 405mm handle width, which is the wider option if the car needs it. Both can be left out if the seat position is set and the driver is the only person using the car regularly.
◫
Planted bracket, base mount seat
The direct route. The Planted SB138 bracket bolts to the factory floor points at 185.50 pounds, and the seat bolts straight onto the bracket. Three bolt patterns on one bracket means most base mount seats from Sparco, OMP, Cobra and Corbeau work without anything in between. A reclining seat is the everyday answer here, or a vintage-era base mount bucket if the car is being used on track.
☰
Planted bracket, side mount bracket, competition shell
The competition route. The Planted bracket goes to the floor as above, then a pair of Sparco FIA steel side mounts (75 pounds) go between the bracket and the seat. This is the route for fixed back FIA shells that do not base mount. It adds height to the seat position, so if the roof is tight on the driver already, base mount is the lower build.
Everything listed here is specific to the 240Z S30 or is a universal part that fits the bracket. Sliding runners are optional but add height: think about whether you need the adjustment before adding one.
- Planted Technology Nissan/Datsun 240Z 1970 to mid-1974 seat bracket, SB138, 185.50 pounds, covers 291mm x 330mm and 345mm x 271mm patterns, one bracket per seat
- Sparco FIA steel side mount brackets, part SS004902, 75.00 pounds, for side mount competition seats
- Endurance Motorsport sliding runner kit, 34.00 pounds, cheapest way to keep the fore-aft adjustment
- Cobra premium sliding runners, part SUBFR07EL, 70.00 pounds, 291mm or 405mm handle width

Tell us the seat when you order the bracketPlanted list the 240Z bracket twice (SB138 and SB138-1). Either listing gets you the right part, but if you want the bracket confirmed against your chassis year before it ships, give us the chassis number when you order and we will check it with them before anything goes out.
Bucket seats
There are three bucket seats on this page that were designed with a car of this era in mind. The OMP Classic 1970s Revival at 260 pounds is base mount, 345mm x 271mm, road and track rated, and Planted published that pattern on the SB138 bracket, so the pairing works. The Cobra Classic 40th Edition at 345 pounds is base mount, 291mm x 330mm, and the Cobra GT3 Historic at 395 pounds is on the same Cobra pattern, also base mount. Either of those two bolts onto the Planted bracket using the 291mm x 330mm holes.
The OMP Classic and the two Cobra vintage-era seats are all listed for under six foot. The 240Z has a low fastback roof and the seat position tends to sit higher than you might expect, so that figure is worth taking seriously. If the driver is taller than that, the Sparco Sprint at 210 pounds and the Mirco Classic FIA at 317 pounds are listed for all heights, and the Cobra Nogaro Carbon at 2,182.50 pounds is listed for over six foot.
The Sparco Sprint (226472) and the Cobra Monaco 40th Edition (19523) both take base mount or side mount, so they work on the Planted bracket without side mounts underneath or with them for the competition build. The Mirco Classic FIA (186675) and the Cobra Nogaro Carbon (228717) are side mount only, so they need the Sparco FIA side mount brackets on top of the Planted frame.
One thing the Planted bracket description notes: base mount Sparco, OMP and Corbeau seats share one bolt pattern (345mm x 271mm), so the same Planted bracket holes take any of those three. Recaro sub-frames are a separate system and are not listed for the 240Z, so that avenue does not apply here.

💬
Our picks, not the whole listMatch the seat to how the car is used
A car worth keeping calls for seats that can come back out cleanly. The OMP Classic 1970s Revival at 260 pounds is the easiest answer for a 240Z that still does road miles: base mount, all heights, all sizes, and it looks right in a car of this era. The Cobra GT3 Historic at 395 pounds gives you more support and a period competition feel for the same base mount route. If the car is being built for track with FIA rules in mind, the Sparco Sprint at 210 pounds on the Planted bracket with Sparco side mounts is the cleaner way to run a competition shell. Send Cameron the chassis year and how the car is used and he will work out the right combination for the build.
Reclining seats
The reclining seats divide by the same bolt patterns as everything else. Sparco R100 (235 pounds), R100 Martini (291.66 pounds), GT (421.58 pounds) and GT Houndstooth (568.42 pounds) are all 345mm x 271mm, which is the Sparco and OMP pattern on the Planted bracket. Cobra Daytona (499.17 pounds), Le Mans (515.83 pounds) and Misano Anniversary (1,374.17 pounds) are all 291mm x 330mm, which is the Cobra pattern. Both patterns are in the Planted bracket, so the choice is genuinely open.
The Corbeau seats, the Sportsman (390 pounds) and the PSR pair (465 pounds), are listed for both 291mm x 330mm and 345mm x 271mm, so they sit on either set of holes in the Planted bracket without issue. The Sportsman is a reclining seat designed for genuine classic and vintage cars, and the S30 qualifies. The PSR pair at 465 pounds covers both seats in one order, which is around 232 pounds a seat and the cheapest way to do both sides at once.
Auto Style Type Retro at 302.50 pounds publishes a 345mm x 280mm pattern, which is neither of the two main Planted patterns. It may pair correctly with the bracket but we would want to confirm it rather than have you find out on the driveway. If the Type Retro appeals, contact us with the part numbers and we will check the pairing before anything ships.
Most of the Cobra recliners are listed for all heights, and the Sparco R100 covers over and under six foot. The Sparco GT is listed for under six foot only. All of the recliners on this page are road and track rated.

Harnesses
The shoulder straps on a 240Z want mounting behind the seat at roughly shoulder height, and there is nothing factory in an S30 at that point to use. A harness bar or a roll cage gives you a proper mounting point. Every Safety Devices bolt-in cage on this page carries a harness bar as part of the kit, which is why the rear cage at 447 pounds is worth considering even if a full cage is not the plan.
On the belts themselves. The Schroth Profi 3×2 at 370.01 pounds and the TRS Magnum 6 Point Superlite at 245 pounds are both FIA 8853-2016 and HANS compatible. The TRS Magnum 4 Point at 205 pounds is FIA 8854-1998, which is an older standard, so check your regulations before buying that one. The Takata Drift II (229 pounds) and Drift III (270 pounds) are road and trackday belts, not FIA rated, and both are listed as not HANS compatible. The TRS Clubman belts at 80 and 100 pounds are the cheapest options and also not HANS compatible.
FIA harnesses carry an expiry date that ends their competition life whether they have been worn or not. On a car this age being taken to historic events, check whether the series you are running in accepts a current FIA belt or requires something period-specific before buying.

Our recommendationsSort the mounting point first, then the belt
On a 240Z the belt is a simpler decision than where the shoulder straps go. If a bolt-in rear cage is in the plan, the Safety Devices unit at 447 pounds has a harness bar built in and may be used on its own. If no cage is going in, a dedicated harness bar is the cleaner option. The TRS Magnum 6 Point Superlite at 245 pounds is the cheapest current FIA belt here if scrutineering is relevant. The Schroth Profi 3x2 at 370.01 pounds is the better belt. Tell us whether it is going to a track day, a competition or a road car and whether a HANS device is in the build, and we will say which combination works.
Roll cages
Six cages are listed for the 240Z S30. Two from Custom Cages (a CDS kit at 1,275.53 pounds and a T45 kit at 1,607.42 pounds), and four from Safety Devices in two variants: a standard UK spec and a USA spec. That split matters because a lot of Z cars in the UK are American imports, and the USA spec cages (D004 USA) are built to the US market body dimensions rather than the UK spec body. If the car came from the States, the USA spec cage is the one to look at.
The Safety Devices bolt-in rear cage in UK spec (447 pounds) and USA spec (534 pounds) both come with harness bar options and may be used on their own without a front hoop. The 6 point bolt-in cage in UK spec (747 pounds) and USA spec (883 pounds) adds front door bars and mounts to the floor and rear wheel arches.
The Custom Cages options are weld-in and are listed as historic spec, which means they are built for the 240Z in period racing trim rather than a modern cage design. Both are listed for road, track and motorsport use, and the choice between CDS and T45 is a tube material choice, not an eligibility choice. If the car is being built to a specific class, tell us what it has to satisfy and we will say which cage kit is the right starting point.

What fits what
The Planted bracket publishes holes for 291mm x 330mm (Cobra) and 345mm x 271mm (Sparco, OMP). Seats on either of those patterns bolt straight to the bracket. The Auto Style Type Retro at 345mm x 280mm is not one of them, and it needs confirming before ordering.

Common questions
Which fitting bracket do I need for a Datsun 240Z?
Planted Technology SB138, at 185.50 pounds, is the vehicle-specific bracket for the Nissan and Datsun 240Z 1970 to mid-1974. It picks up the factory floor mounting points without cutting anything. Planted list it twice (SB138 and SB138-1), and either listing gets you the right part. If you want it confirmed against your chassis number before it ships, give us the number and we will check with them before anything goes out.
Which bolt pattern does the Planted bracket use?
Three patterns: 291mm x 330mm (Cobra), 345mm x 271mm (Sparco and OMP) and the standard shared third pattern. Most aftermarket seats from those brands bolt straight to the bracket. The Auto Style Type Retro at 345mm x 280mm is not one of the three, so ask us before pairing it.
Can I fit a side mount competition seat to a 240Z?
Yes. The Planted bracket goes to the floor as normal, and a pair of Sparco FIA steel side mount brackets (75 pounds) goes between the bracket and the seat. This is the route for fixed back FIA shells. It adds height to the seat position, so if the roof is close on the driver already, a base mount seat straight to the bracket is the lower build.
Does the Corbeau Sportsman fit a 240Z?
Yes. The Sportsman is designed for genuine classic and vintage cars and the 240Z qualifies. It is listed for both 291mm x 330mm and 345mm x 271mm, so it sits on either set of holes in the Planted bracket. At 390 pounds it is a reclining seat rated road and track, covering all heights and a 32 to 38 inch waist.
Will OMP and Sparco seats share the same bracket?
Yes. Base mount Sparco, OMP and Corbeau seats share the 345mm x 271mm bolt pattern, so any frame drilled to that pattern takes all three. The Planted SB138 publishes that pattern as one of its three, so any of those seats bolt onto it. Recaro sub-frames are a separate system and there is no Recaro listing for the 240Z.
Which cage fits a Datsun 240Z?
Six are listed: Safety Devices bolt-in rear cage at 447 pounds and 6 point bolt-in at 747 pounds in UK spec, Safety Devices USA spec equivalents at 534 and 883 pounds, Custom Cages CDS weld-in at 1,275.53 pounds and T45 weld-in at 1,607.42 pounds. If the car is a US import, the USA spec Safety Devices cage is the correct one, not the UK spec. Custom Cages describe their options as historic spec, built for the 240Z in period racing trim.
Does the car need a UK spec or USA spec cage?
It depends on which market the car was built for. Datsun sold large numbers in the US, so many Z cars now in the UK are American imports. The Safety Devices D004 USA cage is built to the US market body dimensions and the D004 UK cage is built to the UK body. If the car came from the States, the USA spec cage is the one to order. If you are not sure, send us the VIN and we will help confirm which applies.
Where do the harness shoulder straps mount on a 240Z?
The straps want mounting behind the seat at roughly shoulder height, and there is nothing in the factory S30 bodywork at that point. A harness bar or a roll cage gives you a proper mounting point. Every Safety Devices bolt-in cage on this page has a harness bar built in, and the bolt-in rear cage at 447 pounds may be used on its own if you do not need a full cage.
What is the difference between the Planted SB138 and SB138-1?
Planted list the 240Z bracket twice, under two part numbers, both for the same application. Ordering from either listing gets you the same bracket. The description says they will confirm against your chassis number if you want certainty before shipping, which is worth doing if the car is at the edge of the 1970 to 1974.5 build window.
Do I need to check the floor before fitting a seat bracket?
Yes. The Planted listing flags this directly: rust around the seat mounting points is a standing problem on the S30, along with the frame rails and the areas under the sills. Pull up the carpet and look at the floor before ordering anything. The bracket bolts to the floor and the floor needs to be solid. Finding a rust issue after the seats arrive is a much worse outcome than finding it beforehand.
More help
If you are looking at other cars from the same era or the same manufacturer, the Japanese classic and the period sports car guides share a number of the same seats and brackets. For any fitment question on a specific 240Z, the quickest way to get it confirmed is through the contact link: give us the chassis year, whether it is a UK or US market car, and what the seat is for, and Cameron will work out the right combination for the build.
