The R56 has a cult following on track days, and that is part of why finding it a seat is such a common question at GSM. The factory buckets sit high to clear the transmission tunnel and the wheel arches, and on a car this size that eats into headroom you did not have much of to start with. Owners running a Cooper S or a JCW hard through a circuit tend to notice the standard seat moving under them well before the front tyres do.
We sell three separate direct fit frame routes for the R56, from Cobra, Sparco and Recaro, and each one drops the seat onto the factory floor points without any cutting or drilling. Which frame you buy settles which seat you can run, so read the fitting section before you pick a seat rather than after.

We stock a fitting frame for the R56 from three of the brands we rate, and between them they cover every seat in this guide. A frame is the vehicle specific base that bolts to the factory floor mounting points in place of the standard runners, and it sets your final seat height and how far back you can sit. Get the frame right first and the seat swap is straightforward from there.
Part COBBNP7E327, £255.00 inc VAT a side. Sold individually, so a pair means two in the basket. Built for Cobra seats specifically, Cobra's own listing says fitment on another brand cannot be guaranteed. Includes the base frame, sliders and seat belt brackets.
Part 00499038-1, £97.44 inc VAT a side. Sold individually, RHD driver and passenger listed separately. Takes Sparco, OMP and Corbeau base mount seats. Sliding runners are a separate order if you want fore-aft adjustment.
Part 689529-X2, £675.00 inc VAT, listed as the pair rather than per side. A direct fit for the Recaro Sportster CS, no universal bracket or adapter needed.
Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern, and on the R56 there are three that matter. The Cobra Le Mans uses 291mm x 330mm, and Cobra’s own fitment note for this frame says to use it with Cobra seats only, so that frame only opens up the Cobra Le Mans. Sparco recliners use 345mm x 271mm, which is what the Sparco subframe is built around, and Sparco list the same frame as compatible with Corbeau and OMP base mount seats too. The Corbeau RRS Low Base is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm on paper, but Cobra’s own instructions rule out mixing brands on their frame, so on this car the Corbeau has a confirmed route through the Sparco subframe only. The Recaro Sportster CS runs 405mm x 290mm and bolts straight to the Recaro subframe, which is a direct fit rather than a universal bracket.
| Seat | Bolt pattern | Cobra subframe | Sparco subframe | Recaro subframe |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sparco R100 | 345 x 271 | No | Fits | No |
| Sparco R500 | 345 x 271 | No | Fits | No |
| Corbeau RRS Low Base | 291 or 345 | No, brand-locked | Fits | No |
| Cobra Le Mans | 291 x 330 | Fits | No | No |
| Recaro Sportster CS | 405 x 290 | No | No | Fits |
The R100 is the seat we sell the most of into an R56, and on a car of this size that usually comes down to space. It is a compact shell, the recline lever sits clear of the door card even in the tight cabin of a three door, and it leaves more of the budget for the frame. Sparco list it as suitable for all waist sizes and for drivers both over and under six foot, which is unusual for a seat this size and matches what we see across the counter. The open base makes getting in and out of a low two door easier than a seat with a full leg bolster.
The R500 is the step up from the R100 without leaving the Sparco route. Taller backrest, more shoulder support, and dual density foam in the base and backrest that holds its shape better than the R100 on a long run to a track day. It comes in cloth or Sparco’s Sky vinyl, and either way it uses the same 345mm pattern as the R100, so if you are not sure which of the two you want, the Sparco subframe keeps that decision open until later.
The RRS Low Base earns its place here for drivers over six foot who find the roofline of a Mini tight before a bucket seat is even involved. The Low Base version buys back headroom compared to the standard RRS, and it is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm patterns. On paper that would open both the Cobra and Sparco routes, but Cobra’s own fitting note for this car restricts their frame to Cobra-brand seats, so the confirmed route here is the Sparco subframe. The backrest is Corbeau’s own sculpted shape, worth knowing if you have sat in the smoother SVR before and expect the same feel.
The Le Mans is the seat I put people in when the R56 is doing more track days than school runs. The bolsters at the shoulder and thigh sit deeper than either Sparco option, which matters more in a car this light and this eager to change direction, because your body needs holding in place while the chassis does the work. It is built to order through Cobra’s Signature range, spacer fabric, vinyl or leather, with contrast stitching if you want it. The Le Mans Heritage gives the same shape off the shelf in a period-correct trim if you would rather not spec your own. Either way it only goes on with the Cobra subframe, since Cobra’s own instructions rule out mixing it with another brand’s frame.
Recaro’s Sportster CS comes up constantly with BMW owners, and with Mini being a BMW-built car it is no surprise the same seat gets asked about here too. It holds you through the shoulders and thighs without the aggressive squeeze of a full bucket, so it stays comfortable on the drive there as well as on the circuit. Recaro list it as suitable for all waist sizes and all heights, which is unusual for a seat with this much support, and the heated version is worth the extra if the R56 is still doing daily duty through a British winter. The best part for this car is that it bolts straight to a Recaro-branded direct fit frame rather than needing a universal bracket and a separate runner.
All three frames bolt to the R56’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts to spec and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive it, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new. The Cobra subframe already includes its own sliders in the box, so there is nothing extra to add there unless you want to upgrade them. The Sparco and Recaro routes need runners ordered separately if you want fore-aft adjustment on top of the frame.
| Your seat | Runners to order | Works on |
|---|---|---|
| Sparco R100 or R500 | Sparco Seat Sliding Runner Kit, £78.00 the pair | Sparco subframe |
| Corbeau RRS Low Base | Corbeau 345mm Seat Sliding Runners, £117.60 the pair | Sparco subframe |
| Cobra Le Mans | Included with the frame. Cobra 291 Seat Sliding Runners, £117.60 the pair, only if you want an upgrade | Cobra subframe |
| Recaro Sportster CS | Endurance Recaro Compatible Runner Kit, £95.04 | Recaro subframe |
The R56 covers the Mini hatch from 2006 to 2013, Cooper, Cooper S and JCW. The earlier R53 runs up to 2006 and uses a different Sparco frame, not the one in this guide, so check your car’s build date if you are not certain which generation you have.

Not on a standard floor. All three frames bolt to the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts to spec and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new.
No. The Sparco subframe is built around the 345mm x 271mm pattern, and the Cobra Le Mans and Recaro Sportster CS use different patterns again. The Corbeau RRS Low Base is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, but on this car it is confirmed for the Sparco subframe only, since Cobra's own fitting note restricts their frame to Cobra-brand seats.
Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. If you are planning harnesses, tell us when you order and we will make sure the whole setup works together.
Cobra and Sparco list their R56 frames per side, so a pair means two in the basket. The Recaro frame is listed as the pair already, both sides in one order, which is why the price looks higher against the others at first glance.
If a reclining seat trades away more support than you want, we have also covered the widest bucket seats that fit the Mini Cooper R56, which goes through the fixed-back options and the width limits of the R56's cabin.
If it were my money: the R100 on the Sparco frame for a road car on a normal budget, because it does most of the job for the least outlay and leaves the R500 as a later upgrade on the same frame. The RRS Low Base if you are over six foot, since the standard roofline leaves little to spare once a seat goes in. The Le Mans on the Cobra frame if track days are a regular thing and you want the car built around you, in your own trim. And if you keep hearing Recaro from other BMW and Mini owners, they are not wrong, the Sportster CS is the one people hang onto rather than swap out a year later.
Every combination above bolts straight to the R56’s factory mounting points, no drilling. If you are between two of these, or between sizes, send us your height and waist and we will talk it through before you spend anything.
