Toyota MR2 W20 Bucket Seat Guide
The Toyota MR2 W20 (1990 to 1999)
This page covers the W20 only, the second generation MR2 built from 1990 to 1999. Everything below is specific to that chassis, so nothing here has been stretched to cover three different cars at once.
If you are not certain which MR2 you have, or you want to compare all three side by side, the general Toyota MR2 bucket seat guide does that job. Come back here once you have pinned the chassis down.
The W20 is the MR2 we get asked about most, and it is one of only two where you get a real choice of mounting route, because the W10 has a base mount frame listed and nothing else. I am Cameron, and working out which combination suits a particular car is the part of this I handle.
- Three fitting kits listed for the W20, all in stock
- Both routes covered: PCI side mount or Planted base mount
- Built 1990 to 1999, also called the SW20 or Mk2
- Planted frames are priced per frame, so a pair means ordering twice
Side mount or base mount
This is the decision that shapes everything else, because it decides which half of the seat catalogue is even available to you. Get it settled first and the rest of the page narrows down quickly.
Side mount
The seat bolts to brackets on each side of its shell, and those brackets bolt to a subframe on the floor. It is the arrangement most FIA shelled competition seats are designed around. PCI Racing list two W20 subframes, one adjustable and one on sliders.
Base mount
The seat bolts down through its own base onto a frame. Planted Technology make a W20 frame, and they list it as working with the car’s original seat belt clip buckle. Reclining seats are almost all base mount, so this is the route if you want one.
The three W20 fitting kits
These are the kits listed for the W20 chassis. The part numbers are worth quoting if you ring or email, because Planted and PCI both list the W10, W20 and W30 as separate parts and the names look alike.

A spread across the brands we stock rather than one manufacturer’s range, at prices from around two hundred pounds up to the Recaros. Every one of these is FIA approved.

We stock a great deal more than fits on one page, and the right seat depends as much on your build and your size as it does on the car. Tell us which W20 you have and what you use it for and we will narrow it down properly.
Reclining seats for the W20
If the car still does road miles, a reclining sport seat holds you far better than the original without committing you to a fixed back shell. These are base mount, so they go on the Planted frame rather than the PCI subframes.

Roll cages for the W20
The W20 is well served here, which is not true of every MR2. Custom Cages and Safety Devices both list bolt in cages for the Mk2, and there are rear only versions if you want to leave the front of the cabin alone.

Harnesses
Four, five and six point belts. Which one you can run depends on what you have to mount the shoulder straps to, so it is worth settling the seat and any cage before you order belts.

Mounting points are the whole question with harnesses, and they are not the same on every build. Send us a photo of what is behind the seats and we will tell you what will work.
Common questions about W20 seats
Which fitting kit do I need for a W20 MR2?
Three are listed for this chassis. PCI Racing do an adjustable seat mount, part SM-W20-A1, and a sliding sub frame, part SM-W20-S1, both of which are the side mount route. Planted Technology do frame SB057, which is the base mount route. All three are listed as W20 only.
Will a W20 kit fit a W30 Roadster?
No. Planted and PCI both list the W20 and the W30 as separate parts designed around each car’s own bolting points, so they do not interchange. There is a separate W30 guide if that is the car you have.
Do I need to order two frames for a pair of seats?
With the Planted frames, yes. The listing prices one frame and the seating position is selected from the product options, so a driver and passenger pair means adding it to the basket twice and choosing each side.
Will a bucket seat work with the standard seat belt?
Planted list their W20 frame as working with the vehicle’s original seat belt clip buckle, so that is the one to look at if you are keeping the factory belts. On the side mount route it depends on the seat and the subframe, so ask us before you order.
Which seats do the Planted W20 frames take?
Planted list the frame as taking base mount bucket seats and recliners from OMP, Corbeau, Cobra, Recaro, Sparco and Sabelt. Which of those actually suits you comes down to your size and how you use the car, so tell us the seat you are considering and we will check it against the frame.
Can I fit a cage and keep the car usable on the road?
Safety Devices list a rear only bolt in cage for the W20 alongside their full six point, which leaves the front of the cabin as it was. Custom Cages list six point kits in both CDS and T45 tube.
