Toyota MR2 Bucket Seat Guide
The Toyota MR2 (W10, W20 and W30)
Three generations, three different problems. The W10 is a small car with a high floor, the W20 is the one most people are fitting seats to, and the W30 roadster has the tightest cabin of the lot. All three have kit, and none of it interchanges.
The thing that catches MR2 owners out is roof height rather than width. These are low cars and the seat you pick changes where your head ends up, which matters a great deal more in an MR2 than it does in a hatchback. Working out those combinations is what I do here, so this page runs in the order I would tackle it. I am Cameron.
If you already know which car you have, there are pages that go further on each one: the Toyota MR2 W20 guide and the Toyota MR2 W30 guide. Both go into the fitting kits, cages and belts for that chassis on its own.
- Seven fitting kits listed across the three generations
- Two routes: PCI side mount or Planted base mount
- W10 1984 to 1989, W20 1990 to 1999, W30 2000 to 2007
- Everything is priced and supplied per side
Start here, side mount or base mount
Every fitting kit on this page is one or the other, and they do not mix without adaption bars.
Side mount
The seat is held by its sides, on brackets that bolt through the holes in the shell. That is how every FIA fixed back bucket mounts, and it is the option that sits you lowest, which is the whole game in an MR2. On these cars that means the PCI kits.
Base mount
The seat sits on top of a frame and bolts down through its underside. Every reclining sport seat mounts this way. On an MR2 that means the Planted bracket, and it is the only route that covers the W10.
Which MR2 have you got

W10, 1984 to 1989
The original angular Mk1. Planted make a bracket for it, so it is base mount only from us. Safety Devices do both a rear and a full bolt in cage for this generation, which is more cage choice than most cars of its age get.

W20, 1990 to 1999
The Mk2, and the one we fit most seats to. Both PCI kits and the Planted bracket cover it, so you have the full choice of side mount and base mount. Cages from both Custom Cages and Safety Devices.

W30, 2000 to 2007
The MR2 Roadster, sometimes listed as MR-S or Spyder. PCI make both kits for it and Planted make the Spyder bracket. The tightest cabin of the three, so seat choice matters most here.
The side mount route, PCI Racing
PCI cover the W20 and the W30, two kits each. The adjustable seat mount is a one piece laser cut and CNC folded 3mm steel base that bolts to the factory seat mounting points and comes with the side mounts and the full bolt pack. Getting into a proper side mount setup on an MR2 starts at £210.
The sliding sub frame swaps the fixed adjustment for PCI’s S1 sliders. On a two seat car that gets shared, that is usually worth the difference. The full range is in our PCI Racing frames category.
- Comes with the frame, the side mounts and the full bolt pack
- Side mounts adjust 375mm to 445mm across
- 246mm of fore and aft adjustment
- 5 and 6 point sub belt mounting locations built into the base
- Ordered as RHD driver side or RHD passenger side
- No PCI kit for the W10, use the Planted bracket

The base mount route, Planted Technology
Planted are the only route that covers all three generations, and the only route at all if you have a W10. One bracket per chassis, so pick by generation.
Put the seat you are fitting in the checkout comments and we will check the pattern matches before it ships.

Bucket seats for the MR2
These all mount from the side, so they suit the PCI kits on a W20 or W30. PCI list Cobra and Corbeau in standard width only across their range, and their side mounts adjust from 375mm to 445mm, so check with us before ordering an XL shell.

The Sprint is the sensible way in and it is one of the narrower seats we keep. The Rev QRT is the step up and moves to a fibreglass shell, which takes weight out of a car that does not have much to spare.

The TRS-E is the cheapest FIA seat I would put in a road car. The Champ-R is the track day answer, deeper leg bolsters and it holds you under braking, which an MR2 will ask of a seat more than most.

The GT 3D is our best selling seat and the shell is one of the more compact ones we keep, which suits a W30 in particular. The RS2 3D sits a little more upright if the car still does road miles.

The Pole Position fits and it is the seat everyone wants. The Profi SPG is the only seat on this list rated for over 6ft, and in a low roofed mid engined car that is worth knowing before you spend the money.

The Monaco Pro mounts from the side or the base, which makes it the most flexible seat on this page and the one to pick if you have not settled on a kit yet. Steel framed and HANS friendly.

The Pro Series X System 1 is the standard width Corbeau. Fibreglass shell and deeper than the Cobra, so worth sitting in first if you are fitting it to a W30.

Any side mounted seat in the range will bolt to the PCI kit, and the catalogue runs a lot deeper than the seats shown here. We have picked a spread of brands and price points to show what the car takes. On an MR2 the deciding factor is usually headroom rather than width, so tell us your height and which generation you have and we will work out what fits before you order.
Reclining seats for the MR2
Recliners need the Planted bracket. Worth repeating the headroom point here: a reclining seat on a base mount frame usually sits you higher than the standard seat, and in a W30 in particular that can be the difference between comfortable and not.
The Sparco R100 is the default and suits all sizes. The Auto Style Type Retro fits the age of a W10 or W20 better than a modern shell. The Corbeau PSR is the one for a wider driver. There is more in our reclining sport seats category.

Driver fit at a glance
Waist and height ratings are the manufacturer fit guidance we hold against each seat. They are a starting point, not a promise, and they say nothing about headroom, which on this car is the thing to check. Where a figure is not published we have left it out rather than guess.

Cages and harnesses
Roll cages
The MR2 is unusually well served for cages. Safety Devices cover the W10 and the W20 with bolt in rear and full options, and Custom Cages make T45 multipoint kits for the Mk2 and Mk3. If the car is going to be scrutineered, tell us which championship and which regulations before you order.

Harnesses
A 4 point clip in is the usual answer for a fast road MR2. If the car has a cage and a fixed back bucket, go to a 6 point and use the sub belt mounting points built into the PCI base.

These are the harnesses we sell most of. The right answer depends on whether the car has a cage, how many mounting points you have to work with, and whether you are running a HANS device. Tell us the setup and we will spec it properly.
Common questions about MR2 seats
Will a bucket seat pass an MOT in an MR2?
Yes, as long as it is securely mounted to the floor and the seat belt still works as it was designed to. The Planted bracket keeps the original seat belt clip buckle, which makes that a shorter conversation at the test station.
Which kit fits a Mk1 MR2?
Only the Planted bracket. PCI do not make a kit for the W10, so the Mk1 is base mount, which in practice means a reclining seat or a base mount bucket.
Will a bucket seat give me more headroom?
Usually yes on a side mounted fixed back, because it sits lower than the standard seat. A reclining seat on a base mount frame often sits you higher. That is the single most important thing to get right on this car, so tell us your height and generation and we will work it out.
Is the MR2 Roadster the same as the MR-S?
Yes. W30, MR-S, MR2 Roadster and Spyder all refer to the 2000 to 2007 car. Planted list theirs as the Spyder bracket and PCI list theirs as W30.
Do I need two fitting kits for two seats?
Yes. Everything on this page is priced and supplied per side, so a pair of seats means a driver side kit and a passenger side kit.
Does the PCI kit include the side mounts?
Yes. The adjustable seat mount comes with the frame, a set of side mounts and the full bolt pack. You only need to add the seat.
