Toyota MR2 W30 Bucket Seat Guide
The Toyota MR2 W30 Roadster (1999 to 2007)
The W30 is the odd one out in the MR2 line. It is the only one without a fixed roof, and that shapes what is available to it, particularly once you get past the seat itself and start looking at cages and belts. This page covers that car on its own.
If you want the three generations compared side by side, or you are not yet certain which MR2 you are looking at, the general Toyota MR2 bucket seat guide does that. This page assumes you already know you have the Roadster.
Depending on where it was sold you will see this car badged as the MR2 Roadster, the MR-S or the Spyder. Same chassis, same fitting kit, different badge. I am Cameron, and matching a seat and a frame to the actual car rather than to a model name is the part of this I deal with.
- Three fitting kits listed for the W30, all in stock
- Both routes covered: PCI side mount or Planted base mount
- Built 1999 to 2007, sold as the MR2 Roadster, MR-S or Spyder
- Two roll cages listed, and one of them is hardtop only
Side mount or base mount
Settle this first. It decides which half of the seat catalogue is open to you, and on a car with this little room to play with it is worth deciding deliberately rather than by whichever seat you liked the look of.
Side mount
The seat bolts to brackets on each side of its shell, and those bolt to a subframe on the floor. It is what most FIA shelled competition seats are built around. PCI Racing list two W30 subframes, an adjustable mount and a sliding one, both bolting to the factory seat mount locations.
Base mount
The seat bolts down through its own base onto a frame. Planted Technology make a W30 frame and list it as working with the car’s original seat belt clip buckle. If you want a reclining seat this is the route, because they are almost all base mount.
The three W30 fitting kits
These are the kits listed for the W30 chassis. Quote the part numbers if you get in touch, because Planted and PCI list the W10, W20 and W30 as separate parts and the names read almost the same.

Bucket seats for the W30
A spread across the brands we stock rather than one manufacturer’s range. All FIA approved, and the fit table further down carries each manufacturer’s own published sizing so you can rule seats in and out before you ask.

We stock far more than fits on one page, and in a cabin this size the right answer depends on your height and build as much as on the car. Tell us roughly how tall you are and what you use the Roadster for and we will shorten the list properly.
Reclining seats for the W30
If the car still does road miles, a reclining sport seat gives you a lot more support than the original without a fixed back shell. These are base mount, so they sit on the Planted frame rather than the PCI subframes.

Brackets and runners for a reclining seat
The Planted W30 frame is the mounting, and a sliding runner kit goes between the frame and the seat if you want fore and aft adjustment.

Roll cages for the W30
This is where the Roadster differs most from the W20. Two cages are listed for the Mk3, and the roof you have decides which of them is open to you.

Harnesses
Four, five and six point belts. What you can actually run depends on what there is to mount the shoulder straps to, which on an open car is the first thing to work out rather than the last.

Shoulder strap mounting is the whole question, and it is not the same on a soft top car as it is on one with a hardtop or a cage. Send us a photo of what is behind the seats and we will tell you what will work.
Common questions about W30 seats
Which fitting kit do I need for a W30 Roadster?
Three are listed for this chassis. PCI Racing do an adjustable seat mount, part SM-W30-A1, and a sliding sub frame, part SM-W30-S1, which are the side mount route. Planted Technology do frame SB227, which is the base mount route. All three are listed for the W30 only.
Will a W20 kit fit my W30?
No. Planted and PCI list the W20 and W30 as separate parts, each designed around that car’s own bolting points. There is a separate W20 guide if that is the car you have.
What roll cages can I get for the W30?
Two are listed. Custom Cages do a multipoint T45 kit for the Mk3, and JP do a half cage which is listed for hardtop cars only. Check which roof your car has before ordering the JP one.
Do I need to order two Planted frames for a pair of seats?
Yes. The listing prices one frame and the seating position is picked from the product options, so a driver and passenger pair means adding it to the basket twice and selecting each side.
Which seats do the Planted W30 frames take?
Planted list the frame as taking base mount bucket seats and recliners from OMP, Corbeau, Cobra, Recaro, Sparco and Sabelt. Which of those suits you comes down to your size and how you use the car, so tell us which seat you are considering and we will check it against the frame.
Can I keep the standard seat belts?
Planted list their W30 frame as working with the vehicle’s original seat belt clip buckle, so that is the one to look at if you are staying on factory belts. On the side mount route it depends on the seat and subframe combination, so ask us before ordering.
