Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Vauxhall Calibra, including our fitting guide

The Calibra made its name on a drag coefficient rather than a power figure, and thirty-plus years on that low, slippery cabin is still the best reason to own one. The factory seats never quite matched the ambition of the shape around them, and on a car this age the cloth has usually thinned, the bolsters have collapsed, and the seat sits higher than the low scuttle and shallow screen suggest it should. Drop a proper recliner onto a fitting frame and the driving position finally does what the bodywork was always promising.

We see two kinds of Calibra owner at the counter. One is putting a genuinely tidy example back together and wants a seat that reads right against a period-correct interior. The other has started taking theirs to shows and the odd track day and needs something that actually holds them in place through a corner. Both routes lead to the same choice: a base mount recliner on a frame built for this car.

  • Two frame routes in stock for the Calibra: Cobra and Sparco
  • Cobra frames take 291mm pattern seats, Sparco frames take 345mm pattern seats
  • The Calibra qualifies as a genuine retro and classic car, so the Sparco GT joins the lineup
  • Both routes bolt to the factory mounting points, and the Sparco route reuses your original runners

The Calibra. The frame you pick decides which of the five seats below can go in it.

The two frame routes into a Calibra

We stock a fitting frame for the Calibra from two of the three brands we rate, and between them they cover every seat in this guide. There is no Planted bracket listed for this car, so which of the two you buy decides which seats you can run, and that choice comes first. A frame is the vehicle-specific base that bolts to the floor in place of the standard mounting, and it sets your final seat height.

291

Cobra subframe

Part SU-VX-CA, £231.66 inc VAT. Sold individually, one frame per seat. Cobra's own listing only guarantees fitment with Cobra-brand seats, so tell us what seat is going on it when you order.

345

Sparco subframe

Part 00499048-1749, £86.68 inc VAT a side, RHD driver and passenger listed separately, sold as a single. Its own compatible-seats listing names Corbeau and OMP base mount seats alongside Sparco, and it reuses your original Calibra runners rather than needing a new kit.

The number that decides it

Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern, and on the Calibra there are two that matter. The Cobra subframe is built around 291mm x 330mm, and the Sparco subframe around 345mm x 271mm. The two Corbeau seats in this guide, the RRS Low Base and the Sportsman, are physically drilled for both patterns, so they sit on either frame. We can confirm that fit on the Sparco subframe straight away because Sparco’s own compatible-seats listing names Corbeau directly. Cobra’s subframe listing does not carry the same confirmation for other brands, so if you want a Corbeau seat on the Cobra route, tell us when you order and we will check it before it ships.

Pick the seat firstThen buy the frame route that matches its pattern. The two Corbeau seats keep the Sparco route open without question, and the Cobra route open once we have confirmed it against your exact spec. My job at GSM is working out exactly this combination for a given car and driver, so if you are stuck between two, ask.

Sparco R100: the everyday value pick

The R100 is the seat we fit into more Calibras than anything else, and on a car built to sit you low in the first place it is an easy match. It is a compact, open-based seat, so climbing past the door card of a two door coupe stays easy, and Sparco list it as suitable for all waist sizes and for drivers both over and under six foot. That is a wide net for a recliner this size, and it leaves the biggest share of your budget for the frame rather than the seat.

  • From £282.00 inc VAT, the cheapest way into this guide
  • All waist sizes, drivers over and under six foot
  • Cloth trim, in black or a choice of two-tone colourways
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Sparco subframe only

Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base: keeps every route open

The RRS Low Base is the seat to pick if you have not settled on a frame yet, or if you want to keep both options open while you decide. It is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, so on paper it bolts to either subframe, though we will only confirm the Cobra route once we know it is going onto that specific frame, since Cobra’s own listing only guarantees fitment with its own seats. On the Sparco subframe it is a straightforward fit, and the Low Base version buys back headroom for taller drivers under a coupe roofline that was never generous to begin with.

  • £498.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Cloth, leather or vinyl trim, integrated headrest
  • Listed 4 point compatible
  • Drilled for both patterns, confirmed on Sparco, ask us first for Cobra

Cobra Le Mans: the support pick

The Le Mans is the seat for a Calibra doing more than shows. The shoulder and thigh bolsters go a lot deeper than the R100’s open base, so your body stays put mid corner instead of leaning on the door card. It only goes on the Cobra subframe, since the Sparco frame is built around a different pattern, but that route also keeps you inside Cobra’s own guaranteed same-brand fitment. It is made to order through Cobra’s Signature range, so you choose the trim rather than take whatever colour turns up, and the Le Mans Heritage brings a period look off the shelf if that suits the car better.

  • £619.00 inc VAT, built to order in your trim
  • Le Mans Heritage at £649.00 inc VAT for the period look off the shelf
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights, 13.4kg
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe only

Sparco GT: the retro pick

The GT is Sparco’s own answer to a period-correct interior, and it is the seat we point classic and retro owners at first. The Calibra qualifies easily, thirty-plus years old and still turning heads on its shape alone, and the GT’s narrower shell suits that kind of build better than a wide modern bucket would. The fit range is tighter than the R100’s though: Sparco list it at 32 to 36 inch waist and under six foot, so check your own numbers against that before ordering, and pair it with the R100 or the RRS Low Base elsewhere in this guide if a second seat in the car needs to fit a bigger driver.

  • From £505.89 inc VAT, Houndstooth edition at £682.10 inc VAT
  • 32 to 36 inch waist, under six foot only, check your numbers first
  • Cloth trim
  • Listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Sparco subframe only

Corbeau Sportsman: the genuine classic pick

The Sportsman is Corbeau’s classic-car seat, and we only recommend it on cars old enough to earn it, which the Calibra is. It carries a period shape rather than a modern bucket profile, and like the RRS Low Base it is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, so it can sit on either subframe route depending which one you have gone with elsewhere in the car. Trim runs to cloth, leather or vinyl with a choice of piping colour, which matters more on a seat meant to look right against an original dash than it does on a track-only bucket.

  • £468.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Cloth, leather or vinyl trim, choice of piping colour
  • Listed 4 point compatible
  • Drilled for both patterns, confirmed on Sparco, ask us first for Cobra

Getting it bolted down

Both frames bolt to the Calibra’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new. The Sparco subframe is the unusual one here: its own listing states it requires the use of your original runners, so you keep the runners already in the car rather than buying a new sliding kit. The Cobra route needs its own runner, since the Cobra subframe listing does not carry the same reuse note.

The Sparco subframe is listed for Calibras built from July 1991 to October 1997, which is narrower than the car’s full 1989 to 1997 production run. If your registration falls outside that window, check with us before ordering rather than assuming the frame applies. The Cobra subframe’s own listing does not carry the same date range, so we will confirm fitment against your registration when you place the order.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the floor of my Calibra?

Not on a standard floor. Both frames bolt to the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts properly and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new.

Can I run a Sparco or Cobra seat on the other brand's frame?

No. The Sparco subframe is built around the 345mm x 271mm pattern and the Cobra subframe around 291mm x 330mm, and neither matches the other seat's pattern. The two Corbeau seats in this guide are the exception, drilled for both, though we still confirm the Cobra route against your exact spec before it ships.

Do I need to buy new runners for the Sparco route?

No. The Sparco subframe's own listing states it requires the use of your original runners, so you keep the runners already fitted rather than buying a new sliding kit. The Cobra route needs its own runner, since its listing does not carry the same reuse note.

Will these seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. If you are planning harnesses, tell us when you order and we will make sure the whole setup works together.

Which years of Calibra does this guide cover?

The Calibra ran from 1989 to 1997. The Sparco subframe is specifically listed for cars built from July 1991 to October 1997, narrower than the full production run, so check your registration date against that before ordering. The Cobra subframe does not carry the same published date range, and we will confirm fitment against your exact car when you order.

What I would actually buy

If it were my money: the R100 on the Sparco frame for a road car on a sensible budget, because it does most of the job for the least outlay and its original-runner fitment keeps the bill down further. The RRS Low Base if you have not settled on a frame route yet, since it keeps the door open on both. The Le Mans on the Cobra subframe if the car is doing regular track days and you want it built around you in your own trim. And if the Calibra is staying period-correct, the GT or the Sportsman both earn their place, the GT if your build fits its narrower range, the Sportsman if you want more room to grow into.

Every combination above uses parts that bolt straight to the Calibra’s factory mounting points. Cameron works out the exact fit and frame combination for a given driver day to day, so if you are between two of these seats, or between sizes, get in touch with your height and waist measurement and we will talk it through before you spend anything.
