Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8, including our fitting guide

Track day seat conversations in the Evo 8 community tend to follow a pattern. The cabin is narrow, the stock seats sit you high, and most of the seats people see in modified car magazines are too wide to go in cleanly. Cameron gets asked about this combination regularly, and the answer is always the same: start with the frame, because the frame decides which seats will actually fit.

The Evo 8 takes one fitting route: a Sparco base-mount subframe at 345mm x 271mm. Sparco recliners bolt straight onto it. Corbeau recliners are drilled for both patterns, so they work too. The five seats below all go onto that frame without drilling or floor modification on a standard car.

  • One Sparco sub-frame for the Evo 8: base mount, 345mm x 271mm, £100.80 inc VAT a side
  • Sparco recliners bolt straight on; Corbeau recliners are drilled for both patterns
  • Five picks from two brands, from £282 to over £2,800 inc VAT per seat
  • All five bolt to the factory mounting points, no drilling on a standard floor

The frame route for the Evo 8

The Evo 8 has one Sparco sub-frame: the base-mount unit, which bolts to the factory seat mounting points and accepts any base-mount seat using the 345mm x 271mm bolt pattern. That covers Sparco recliners natively, and Corbeau because they drill their seats for both the Sparco and Cobra patterns. The frame description is worth noting on this car specifically: the Evo 8 cabin is narrower than most modern performance saloons, and the frame listing calls out the R100 by name as a fit that works cleanly in it.

Sparco Seats Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 8 Direct Fit Sub-frame (14849), £100.80 inc VAT a side. Sold per seat position: one driver-side, one passenger-side for a pair. Takes the R100, R333, SPX and both Corbeau recliners. The Sparco sliding runner kit (184229) adds fore-aft adjustment.

The number that decides it

All five seats in this guide bolt to the same Sparco subframe. The pattern is 345mm x 271mm. Corbeau recliners are drilled for both 345mm and the Cobra 291mm, which means they go onto the Sparco sub-frame just as a Sparco recliner would. Pick the seat you want and the frame route is the same for all five.

Sparco R100: the one the frame description points at

The R100 is the recliner the Evo 8 sub-frame listing specifically recommends. The bolster profile is slimmer than most seats in this category, which matters in a cabin that sits narrow by the standards of its performance class, and it goes in without the shell fighting for clearance at the door or the centre console. Sparco publish it for all waist sizes and drivers both over and under six foot, which makes it the most straightforward fit of the five here.

At under three hundred pounds a seat it is also the cheapest entry in this guide. For a car that is being built up around track days without a big seat budget, it is the obvious starting point: proper lateral support, a recline mechanism that still works in the Evo 8 cabin, and the Sparco 345mm pattern that goes straight onto the frame.

  • From £282.00 inc VAT per seat
  • All waist sizes, over and under six foot
  • Slim bolster profile: specifically noted for the Evo 8 cabin
  • Harness slots, 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm: Sparco subframe

Corbeau PSR: both seats in one order

The PSR is Corbeau’s entry recliner and the one that comes up when both sides of the car are being fitted at once. It is listed as a pair, so you get driver and passenger seats together in a single order, and the price works out comparable to two R100s once you have done the sums. Corbeau drill the base for 345mm and 291mm, so it sits straight onto the Sparco sub-frame without any adapter.

The bolsters are lower than the RRS further down the list, which is actually a point in its favour for an Evo 8 that is not a dedicated track car: enough support for a spirited road drive, not so much that every trip to the supermarket feels like an assault course. If the car also carries a passenger who is not an enthusiast, this is the seat that gets fewer complaints.

  • £558.00 inc VAT per pair
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights
  • Sold as a pair: driver and passenger included
  • Drilled for both 345mm and 291mm patterns
  • Harness compatible

Sparco R333: more grip, check the fit range first

The R333 is a step up from the R100 in how firmly it holds you. Deeper bolsters and firmer base foam than the R100, with more shoulder wrap in the backrest. On a car with a narrow cabin the extra grip suits the way an Evo 8 moves, particularly on a tight circuit where the car changes direction quickly and you want the seat keeping you in place rather than working for it yourself.

There is one thing to check before ordering: Sparco publish this seat for 32 to 36 inch waists and drivers under six foot only. On most Evo 8s that is fine, because the cabin suits a compact build, but if you are 36 to 38 inches or taller you should be in the R100 or one of the Corbeaus. The pair listing (187275) is out of stock, so order the single and add two to the basket.

  • £449.47 inc VAT per seat
  • 32 to 36 inch waist only; under six foot only
  • Deeper bolsters and firmer foam than the R100
  • Harness slots, 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm: Sparco subframe

Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base: lower in the cabin, more shoulder wrap

The RRS is what Corbeau are known for in the modified road and club motorsport market. The Low Base version is the one to specify for the Evo 8: the base height is slightly reduced, which gets you a fraction lower in the cabin without going to a competition-rated side-mount setup. The shoulder bolsters are deeper than the PSR and the sculpted backrest shape is more pronounced, which means more lateral support when the Evo is being pushed hard.

Like the PSR, Corbeau drill this seat for both 345mm and 291mm patterns, so it goes straight onto the Sparco sub-frame. If you are coming from a car with a Cobra frame and moving to the Evo 8, the RRS is the seat that follows you without requiring a change of thinking.

  • £498.00 inc VAT per seat
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights
  • Low Base version: slightly reduced seat height
  • Corbeau's sculpted shoulder shape, deeper than the PSR
  • Drilled for both 345mm and 291mm patterns

Sparco SPX: the premium track seat

The SPX is Sparco’s flagship recliner and sits in a different category from the rest of this list. There is no head support on this seat: it is built on the assumption that you have a harness bar or roll cage behind you when on track, which an Evo 8 at this level of build usually has. The lateral hold is firmer than anything else in this guide, the shell is deeper, and the Italian manufacture puts it in a price bracket that the other four do not touch.

This is the seat for drivers who have already sorted the cage or harness bar and want the best recliner the Sparco sub-frame will take. It is not the right pick for a car that is still on the standard rear seat. If you need help confirming that your setup will work with this seat before ordering, drop us an email or click to open a chat.

  • £2,815.79 inc VAT per seat
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights
  • No head support: needs a harness bar or roll cage
  • Competition-approved construction, Italian manufacture
  • 345mm x 271mm: Sparco subframe

Getting it bolted down

The Sparco sub-frame bolts to the factory mounting points on the Evo 8 floor. No drilling on a standard car. The sub-frame is sold per seat position, so fitting two seats means two frames in the basket: one driver-side and one passenger-side. Torque the floor bolts properly and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often places the buckle somewhere new.

The Sparco sliding runner kit (184229) adds fore-aft adjustment between the frame and the seat. It is not included with the sub-frame and is a separate order. For Sparco-pattern seats (R100, R333, SPX) the runner kit is a direct fit. For Corbeau seats on the Sparco sub-frame the 345mm bolt spacing aligns, and the runner requirement is the same; drop us an email if you want confirmation before ordering the kit.

Common questions

Does the Sparco sub-frame need any drilling to fit the Evo 8?

No, not on a standard floor. It bolts to the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts to spec and check that the seat belt buckle sits in a position you can reach before you drive anywhere.

Can I put a Cobra recliner on the Sparco sub-frame?

No. Cobra recliners use a 291mm x 330mm pattern and the Sparco sub-frame is 345mm x 271mm. They do not line up. Corbeau recliners are the exception, because they are drilled for both patterns, which is why both the PSR and the RRS appear in this guide despite the frame being Sparco only.

Does the runner kit come with the sub-frame?

No. The Sparco sub-frame (14849) and the runner kit (184229) are separate listings. The sub-frame gives you the vehicle-specific base. The runner kit adds the fore-aft adjustment between that base and the seat shell. Order both if you want sliding adjustment.

Is there anything on the Evo VI GSR?

Yes. We answered a customer question about fitting Corbeau PSR seats in a 1999 Evo VI GSR in a separate post. The sub-frame and pattern logic is similar to the Evo 8 but the frames are car-specific, so check the listing for your exact generation before ordering.

Would a fixed bucket seat work better for track use?

If the car is a track-only build, yes. A fixed back saves weight and holds you harder. A recliner wins when the car also does the road and needs to carry a passenger. We have not yet written a full bucket seat guide for the Evo 8, but if you want to know what buckets and frames are available for it, drop us an email or click to open a chat.

What I would actually buy

If the car is mainly a road car that sees track days: the R100 on the Sparco sub-frame and the runner kit. The frame description on the Evo 8 specifically points at that seat for a reason, the bolster profile clears the cabin without a fight, and at £282 a seat it is the least amount you will spend to get a proper result. If you fit inside the 32 to 36 inch range, the R333 for the extra grip. If both seats are going in at once and the budget is tight, the Corbeau PSR pair at £558 for two is the sensible move.

For a car with the cage or harness bar already sorted: the SPX, no argument. It is the best recliner the Sparco sub-frame will take and the Evo 8 deserves it if the rest of the build matches that level.

All five combinations use the Sparco sub-frame that bolts straight to the Evo 8 floor. If you are between two seats or not sure whether the SPX will work with your setup, ring us on 0115 9893488 and we will talk it through before you spend anything.
