ND, 2016 onwards

This guide covers the Mk4, ND, from 2016 onwards. PCI Racing’s sliding subframe is confirmed for this chassis, alongside universal side mounts and runners for seats that use their own fixing, and the Planted Technology bracket for reclining seats.

Mounting

The PCI Racing Mazda MX5 Mk4 (ND) Sliding Sub Frame at £330.00 is confirmed for this chassis, 2016 to present.

For seats that use their own runners, the Sparco FIA Steel Side Mount Brackets at £90.00 Cobra Nogaro Steel Side Mounts at £78.00 the Sparco Seat Sliding Runner Kit at £41.94, and the Cobra Premium Sliding Runners at £84.00 give the fixing options.

A reclining seat bolts down through its own base and needs a bracket underneath it. For this car that is the Planted Technology ND bracket at £224.95, part SB248, listed for the 2016 on car and covering both sides.

Competition bucket seats

The Cobra Clubman at £269.00 and Cobra Monaco Pro at £235 are the accessible starting points. The Sparco Sprint FIA at £252.00 sits alongside.

The OMP Champ-R at £381.60 Mirco GT 3D Fabric at £324, and Sparco Grid Q at £438.00 are a step up. The Sparco Rev QRT at £414.00 and Evo QRT at £570.00 are the premium options for an MX-5 built properly for competition.

The Cobra Clubman at £269.00 is the practical starting point for a track day car. If you want a lighter fibreglass shell, the OMP Champ-R at £381.60 is well judged for the money. For an ND built properly for competition, the Sparco Evo QRT at £570.00 gives the strongest support through fast corners.

Reclining sport seats

The ND cabin is small and that rules out most reclining seats before comfort comes into it. Mazda went back to the size of the original car for this generation, so a wide recliner fouls the transmission tunnel on one side and the door card on the other. Only the slim shells go in: the Sparco R100 at £235, the vinyl R100 at the same money, and the Corbeau PSR at £558.00 for the pair.

All three mount on the Planted Technology ND bracket at £224.95. Worth knowing before you order that none of them will get you lower than the standard seat. A recliner sits on its own frame with a slider under it, and that stack eats any drop you were hoping for, so you finish about level with where you started.

That is why we usually point people at a fixed back bucket for this car. A shell on the PCI subframe actually drops you, and in an ND that is the change that makes the car fit you. The reclining route suits a car that still has to do everyday miles.

The Sparco R100 at £235 is the one most ND owners end up with, slim enough for the cabin and comfortable on the road. The Corbeau PSR at £558.00 for the pair is the step up if you want both sides doing and a bit more shape to the seat. Both need the Planted bracket at £224.95, and neither will sit lower than your standard seat. If getting low is the point of the exercise, ring 0115 9893488 and Cameron will take you through the bucket options instead.

Harnesses

Harnesses need a roll cage or harness barA 4-point, 5-point or 6-point harness with separate shoulder straps needs proper attachment points above and behind the seat. Fit a roll cage or a properly engineered harness bar before using anything above a 3-point belt.

The TRS Clubman 3-point bolt-in at £96.00 and 4-point clip-in at £120.00 both use the standard seat belt anchor points and do not need a cage. For 4-point competition use, the TRS Magnum 4-point FIA at £246.00 and the Takata Drift II at £274.80 are the step up.

For 6-point harnesses, the cage goes in first. The TRS Magnum 6-point Superlite FIA at £294.00 the Takata Drift III at £324.00 and the Schroth Profi 3×2 at £444.01 all suit a caged ND going to competition or serious track days.

Common questions

The ND has run from 2016 to present and is the current-shape MX-5. If you are not sure, send us the registration.

The Planted Technology ND bracket at £224.95, part SB248. It is listed for the 2016 on car and covers the driver and passenger side. The PCI subframe is what the fixed back shells use, so it does a different job. Ring us if you are not sure which one your seat needs.

Because the rest do not suit the car. The ND is tight across the tunnel and the door card, so a wide recliner will not sit square in it. The Sparco R100 and the Corbeau PSR are the slim shells we are happy to sell for this cabin. If you have your eye on something else, send us the model and we will check it against the car before you order.

No. It sits on its own frame with a slider underneath, and that stack puts you back at about standard height. If headroom in a helmet is what you are trying to solve, a fixed back shell on the PCI subframe is the route that actually drops you.

Not necessarily. Some seats use their own universal runners instead. Check the seat listing or ask us to confirm.

No. A 6-point harness needs anchor points above and behind the seat for the shoulder straps. Fit a roll cage or a properly engineered harness bar first.

In most NDs we would say the bucket. The cabin is tight and a fixed back shell on the PCI subframe is the only route that gets you meaningfully lower. A reclining seat keeps the recline and the everyday comfort, which is the right call if the car does real mileage, but you will not gain any height back.
