This guide covers the classic Defender, 1983 to 2016, 90, 110 and 130. Cobra sell a range of seats with the Defender bracket bundled in, direct-fit with no separate subframe to buy. Everything else on this page needs a subframe, covered further down.
A fixed-back competition bucket would hold you better through a corner, and make the vehicle considerably worse to live with. On a Defender, used for long drives and rough ground rather than laps, that is the wrong trade for most people. A reclining touring seat is the right call unless you are genuinely building for off-road competition.

Direct-fit Defender seats

What makes each listing Defender specific is the bracket it comes with, not the shell, so the seat itself is the same one Cobra sell across their range. The Cobra Le Mans at £625 and Le Mans Heritage at £625 are the accessible touring options. The Monaco Pro at £228.33 and Monaco Premium at £325 sit below that. The Daytona at £645.50, Stuttgart Vinyl at £715.83, and Misano Anniversary at £1395 are the premium end.

Direct-fit seats for the DefenderWhich direct-fit seat for a Land Rover Defender
The Cobra Le Mans at £625 is the sensible default: an orthopaedic-style backrest that supports the length of your back rather than gripping your ribs, with a recline for long runs, on a bracket sorted specifically for this car. If you want more from the shell, the Daytona at £645.50 is a similar price with a different feel. For a genuine step up, the Misano Anniversary at £1395 is the top of this range.
Heated reclining pairs
Sold as a pair with heating built in. The Corbeau Sportline RRS at £1020, also available with a low base at £1020, and the Sportline SVR at £1040 are the accessible options. The pair of Cobra Misano Anniversary seats with lumbar and heating at £3163 is the premium choice for both front seats at once.
Reclining sport seats
The Sparco R100 at £235 and R500 Sky at £290.83 are the accessible starting points. The Auto Style Type Retro at £302.50 and Sparco GT at £421.58 sit a step up.
The Cobra Le Mans at £515.83 and Daytona at £499.17 are the standard versions of the seats above, without the Defender-specific bracket bundled in, so pair them with a subframe. The Corbeau SVR Vinyl pair at £850 and Sportline RRS pair at £830 are sold as pairs.

Competition bucket seats
For a Defender genuinely built for off-road competition rather than road use. The Sparco Sprint FIA at £210 and Sprint Sky FIA at £252 are the accessible starting points. The OMP TRS-E Sky at £243 and Mirco GT Vinyl at £333 sit alongside. The Sparco Evo QRT Sky at £510 is the premium option.

Competition seats for the DefenderWhich competition bucket for a Land Rover Defender
Only choose this route if you are genuinely building for off-road competition, not daily driving. The Sparco Sprint FIA at £210 is the practical starting point, and pairs with the Endurance Motorsport Sparco subframe below. For a seat that holds you properly through sustained rough ground, the Sparco Evo QRT Sky at £510 is worth the step up.
Subframes
Any seat above that does not already come with a Defender bracket needs one of these. The Cobra Land Rover 90 subframe at £212.50 fits base-mountable or side-mounted seats from most brands, checked against a 291mm or 405mm handle width measured across the underside of the seat. A motorsport seat or a Cobra Nogaro needs side mounts added, so order those together rather than finding out with the old seat already off.
The Corbeau Defender subframe at £245 only fits Corbeau seats. Endurance Motorsport make brand-specific frames for Sparco at £82.50 and Recaro at £78.30.

Harnesses
Harnesses need a roll cage or harness barA 4-point, 5-point or 6-point harness with separate shoulder straps needs proper attachment points above and behind the seat. Fit a roll cage or a properly engineered harness bar before using anything above a 3-point belt.
The TRS Clubman 3-point bolt-in at £80 and 4-point clip-in at £100 both use the standard seat belt anchor points and do not need a cage. For 4-point competition use, the TRS Magnum 4-point FIA at £205 and the Takata Drift II at £229 are the step up.
For 6-point harnesses, the cage goes in first. The TRS Magnum 6-point Superlite FIA at £245, the Takata Drift III at £270, and the Schroth Profi 3×2 at £370.01 all suit a caged Defender going to off-road competition.

Common questions
Does this guide cover the new Defender?
No. This is for the classic Defender, 1983 to 2016. We do not currently stock kit for the new unibody Defender.
Should I choose a direct-fit seat or a competition bucket?
For most people, a direct-fit or reclining touring seat is the right call. A fixed-back competition bucket holds you better through a corner but is considerably worse to live with day to day. Only go that route if you are genuinely building for off-road competition.
Which subframe do I need?
It depends on the seat brand. Cobra’s Land Rover 90 subframe covers most brands by handle width, Corbeau’s only fits Corbeau seats, and Endurance Motorsport make separate Sparco and Recaro frames. Tell us the seat and we will confirm.
Can I run a 6-point harness without a roll cage?
No. A 6-point harness needs anchor points above and behind the seat for the shoulder straps. Fit a roll cage or a properly engineered harness bar first. A 3-point bolt-in harness uses the standard seat belt anchor points and does not need a cage.
