Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Volkswagen Jetta Mk5, including our fitting guide

The Jetta GLI does what Golf GTI owners would have bought if they had stopped to think about it. Same 2.0 TFSI, same front suspension geometry, same brakes, but in a saloon body with a proper boot, which means a spare set of wheels and a trackday bag fit without strapping anything to the roof. That is why they are cheap, and that is why people build them.

The factory seats are adequate by mid-2000s standards, though the lateral bolsters go soft once a car this age has done real miles, and once the GLI has been remapped or properly set up the driving position starts to feel like an afterthought. Two frame routes for the Jetta: the Cobra direct-fit subframe, which includes its own sliding runners in the price, and the Planted Technology bracket, which opens up the full Sparco range on a car that has no Sparco subframe of its own.

  • Two frame routes in stock for the Jetta Mk5: Cobra direct-fit subframe and Planted Technology bracket
  • Cobra frame includes the sliding runner in the price; Planted bracket needs runners added separately
  • No Sparco subframe for the Jetta Mk5: Sparco seats need the Planted bracket on this car
  • Every seat in this guide is listed as 4 point harness compatible

The Jetta Mk5 GLI. The frame you pick decides which of the five seats below can go in it.

The two frame routes into a Jetta Mk5

Two frame brands cover the Jetta Mk5, and between them they handle every seat in this guide. A frame is the vehicle-specific base that replaces the standard OEM seat runners and bolts to the floor at the original mounting points. Which frame you buy decides which seats you can run, and on the Jetta the choice matters more than on most cars because there is no Sparco subframe available: if you want a Sparco recliner, the Planted bracket is your only route.

291

Cobra direct-fit subframe

Available now, £231.66 inc VAT per side. Priced per seat, so a pair means two in the basket. The runner is included in the Cobra price, which is not how Planted sells it. Takes Cobra 291mm pattern seats and Corbeau's dual-drilled seats.

ANY

Planted Technology bracket

Part SB029-4889, £222.60 inc VAT per side. Handed, so a pair is two to the basket. The bracket itself does not include runners; add the runner that matches your seat's pattern. Takes any seat in this guide including the Sparco R100.

The number that decides it

Every reclining seat in this guide bolts down through a base mount pattern, and on the Jetta Mk5 two patterns cover the five picks. Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm, matched to the Cobra subframe. Sparco’s R100 uses 345mm x 271mm, which does not line up with the Cobra subframe; on this car the Planted bracket is the only route. The Corbeau PSR and the RRS Low Base are drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, so either frame works for those two seats. The Cobra Misano Anniversary shares the 291mm pattern, so it goes on either route too.

Pick the seat firstThen buy the frame route that matches its pattern. The Corbeau PSR and RRS Low Base keep both routes open if you have not settled on a seat yet. Working out the right combination for a given car and driver is the thing Cameron spends most of his day on at GSM, so ask if you are stuck between two.

Cobra Daytona: the best all-rounder

The Daytona is the seat most GLI owners end up with once they have worked through the options, because it does most of what you want it to do without asking for much in return. The bolsters are deep enough to hold you mid-corner without squeezing like a bucket, the build-to-order spec means you can have spacer fabric, vinyl or leather in any one or two-colour combination, and the seat fits the Cobra subframe directly since both share the 291mm pattern. Runners are included in the Cobra frame price, so the only additional cost past frame and seat is fitting time.

The Tartan Edition is worth a mention if you want the seat to look like something rather than just work. Same shell, different trim, ships quicker than a fully custom spec.

  • From £599.00 inc VAT, built to order in your trim
  • Tartan Edition at £899.00 inc VAT, off-the-shelf
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights, 13.5kg
  • Optional heating and lumbar support
  • 291mm x 330mm: Cobra subframe (runners included) or Planted bracket

Corbeau PSR: the best-value pair

The PSR is priced as a pair rather than a single, which makes it the most cost-effective way to replace both front seats in one order. Corbeau drill it for both the 291mm and 345mm patterns, so it bolts onto the Cobra subframe or the Planted bracket without any adapter. The cloth trim is well finished for the money, and the optional heated upgrade from Corbeau is worth adding if the car still sees winter use. Good entry point if you know you want to replace the driver and passenger seats together and want a Corbeau shape without the full Sportline price.

  • £558.00 inc VAT for a driver-and-passenger pair
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights
  • Cloth trim, heated and lumbar upgrade available
  • Drilled for both 291mm and 345mm: fits the Cobra subframe and the Planted bracket
  • Listed 4 point compatible

Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base: the headroom pick

The RRS Low Base is the seat to look at if you are over six foot or the car has been lowered. The Low Base cut brings the seat closer to the floor than the standard RRS height, which buys back the headroom a sport seat typically costs in a car this age. It keeps the same dual-drilled base as the PSR, so it sits on either frame route, and Corbeau’s integrated headrest means there is no separate headrest to manage. Cameron tends to recommend this one first on any lowered GLI where the driver is a medium-to-tall build.

  • £498.00 inc VAT per seat
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights
  • Low Base cut: reclaims headroom on a lowered or tall-driver car
  • Integrated headrest, drilled for both 291mm and 345mm
  • Heating and lumbar upgrade available

Sparco R100: the Planted route starter

The R100 is the seat that opens up the Sparco range on this car without costing a lot to do it. There is no Sparco subframe for the Jetta Mk5, which means the R100 needs the Planted bracket and a Sparco sliding runner kit, adding around £265 to the bracket cost for the runner pair. The trade-off is access to Sparco’s wider lineup later if you decide to step up. The seat itself is a compact, open-based shell that suits all waist sizes and both over- and under-six-foot drivers, and the pair price at £540 inc VAT is one of the stronger value propositions in this guide.

  • £540.00 inc VAT for a driver-and-passenger pair
  • All waist sizes, drivers over and under six foot
  • Cloth trim; also available in vinyl
  • Planted bracket required on this car, add a Sparco runner kit per seat
  • 345mm x 271mm: Planted bracket only on the Jetta Mk5

Cobra Misano Anniversary: the premium pick

The Misano Anniversary is the seat for a GLI that has had the full treatment done. It is made to order on a 4 to 6 week lead time, which rules it out if you need a seat quickly, but what you get is heating and lumbar support fitted as standard rather than as an option, and a shell that weighs 11.5kg against the Daytona’s 13.5kg, which is an unusual result for a higher-spec seat. It shares the 291mm bolt pattern with the Daytona, so it goes on the Cobra subframe or the Planted bracket with the same runner.

  • £1,649.00 inc VAT, made to order (allow 4 to 6 weeks)
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights, 11.5kg
  • Heating and lumbar support fitted as standard
  • Via the Cobra subframe (runners included) or the Planted bracket
  • 291mm x 330mm bolt pattern

Getting it bolted down

Both frames bolt to the Jetta Mk5’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new on a car it has not been fitted to before. Between seat and frame go the sliding runners, and the runner you need depends on the seat’s bolt pattern rather than the frame brand.

One thing worth knowing on the Cobra route: the frame includes the sliding runner in the purchase price, which is not how Sparco or Planted sell it. If you are ordering a Cobra seat on the Cobra subframe, you do not need to add runners separately.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the floor of my Jetta Mk5?

Not on a standard floor. Both frames bolt to the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts correctly and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often places the buckle somewhere new on a car it has not been in before.

Can I put Sparco seats on the Cobra subframe?

No. The Cobra subframe is built around the 291mm x 330mm bolt pattern, and the Sparco R100 uses a 345mm x 271mm pattern that does not line up with it. On the Jetta Mk5 there is no Sparco-specific subframe available, so the only route for Sparco seats is the Planted Technology bracket with a Sparco runner kit.

Will these seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. If you are planning harnesses, tell us when you order and we will check the whole setup works before anything goes out.

What does "handed" mean for the Planted bracket?

It means the driver-side and passenger-side brackets are mirror images of each other and are listed separately. If you are fitting two seats, you need two brackets in the basket: one RHD driver side and one RHD passenger side. The listings are named accordingly, so it is easy to confirm before you order.

Is this guide different from the Golf Mk5 reclining guide?

Yes, in one practical way that matters. The Golf Mk5 has a Sparco direct-fit subframe available; the Jetta does not. That means anyone who wants a Sparco recliner in a Jetta has to go via the Planted bracket, which adds a runner to the order. The Jetta and Golf Mk5 share their floor mounting points, so the Cobra frame and the Planted bracket work on both, but the Sparco subframe specifically only fits the Golf. The Golf Mk5 reclining guide has the three-route layout if that is the car you are fitting.

What I would actually buy

For a GLI that still does daily miles: the Corbeau PSR pair, because you get driver and passenger at one price and both frame routes take it. For a lowered car or a taller driver: the RRS Low Base first, same dual-drill flexibility, Low Base cut reclaims the headroom. For a car that has had the engine and suspension done already: the Cobra Daytona on the Cobra subframe, runners included in the frame price. The R100 pair if you want to stay in the Sparco range and do not mind the Planted bracket to get there. And if the car is a long-term build and money is secondary to result, the Misano Anniversary on a 4 to 6 week lead time is the answer.

Every combination above bolts straight to the Jetta Mk5’s factory floor points. If you are between two of these seats or not sure which route suits your car, call the showroom on 0115 9893488 and we will work it out before you spend anything.
