Porsche built the 928 to replace the 911 and never managed it. Both cars stayed in production side by side for the 928’s entire run, and while the 911 kept the following, the 928 quietly became the more finished thing underneath: front-engined V8, water-cooled, weight split close to even between the axles. None of that shows up in the seat. Every 928 left the factory with a wide, softly padded chair built for a motorway crossing rather than the grip the chassis can actually find, and thirty-plus years on, most of them have gone soft in the bolsters as well as out of date.
We see two kinds of 928 owner. One has an early car and wants the direct-fit route built for it, keeping the cabin close to how it left the factory. The other is running a later S2, S4, GT or GTS and finds the direct-fit frame does not cover their year, so the universal bracket becomes the only route left. Either way, the frame gets bought before the seat, because it decides what will actually bolt down.

We stock a fitting frame for the 928 from two brands, and between them they cover every seat in this guide, provided you buy the right one for your car’s age. A frame is the vehicle-specific base that bolts to the floor in place of the standard seat runners, and it sets your final seat height. On the 928 the two routes do not cover the same years, so which one you need depends on your registration date as much as which seat you want.
Part COBMQ5SQ327, £190.00 inc VAT. The listing covers 1973 to 1984, which in practice means the earliest 928s: the model itself did not reach the road until 1977/78, so this frame suits that first run rather than the S2, S4, GT or GTS built after it. Takes the 291mm pattern, which covers the Sportsman, the RRS Low Base, the Le Mans and the Misano Anniversary.
Part SB052-4949, £222.60 inc VAT. No year cut-off on this listing, so it is the route for any 928, early or late. A flat base that takes any seat in this guide, paired with the runner that matches that seat's pattern.
Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern, and on the 928 there are two that matter. The Corbeau Sportsman and the Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base are drilled for both 291mm x 330mm and 345mm x 271mm, so either one bolts straight to the Cobra subframe as easily as the Planted bracket. The Cobra Le Mans and Cobra Misano Anniversary use the 291mm pattern only, matching the Cobra subframe directly. The Sparco GT uses the wider 345mm pattern on its own, which the Cobra subframe was never built for, so it only goes on with the Planted bracket, whatever year your car is.
| Seat | Bolt pattern | Cobra subframe (early cars) | Planted bracket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Corbeau Sportsman | 291 or 345 | Fits | Fits |
| Sparco GT | 345 x 271 | No | Fits |
| Corbeau RRS Low Base | 291 or 345 | Fits | Fits |
| Cobra Le Mans | 291 x 330 | Fits | Fits |
| Cobra Misano Anniversary | 291 x 330 | Fits | Fits |
We only put the Sportsman in a guide for a genuine classic or vintage car, and every 928 still on the road now clears that bar. The model went out of production in 1995, so even the last GTS off the line is more than thirty years old, and most of the cars we see through the workshop are considerably older than that. The backrest is a plainer, flatter shape than Corbeau’s newer recliners, closer to what a car from this era would have shipped with, and it is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm. That dual pattern means it bolts straight to the Cobra subframe on an early car, or the Planted bracket on any 928 at all, which makes it the seat in this guide with the fewest ways to get the ordering wrong. It comes in cloth, leather or vinyl, with five piping colours if you want to lift the standard black.
The GT is the seat to reach for if you want the cabin to look like it still belongs to the 1980s rather than a modern fast road build. It sits narrower through the shoulders than the seats either side of it here, and Sparco has kept the shape close to what it was building when the 928 was new. It comes in standard cloth or the Houndstooth Edition, a trim Sparco has run since the seventies and one that suits a car kept to a period-correct brief. On the 928 it only goes on the Planted bracket, whatever year your car is, since the Cobra subframe is built to a different pattern entirely. The fit is tighter than the rest of this guide too, so check your own waist against the range before ordering; the Sportsman and the RRS Low Base cover the wider sizes if the GT does not suit.
The RRS Low Base is the seat to pick if you have not settled on a frame yet, or if you are over six foot and want back the headroom a taller driver loses under a coupe roofline. Like the Sportsman it is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, so it bolts straight to the Cobra subframe on an early car as easily as it does the Planted bracket on any year, and the Low Base version sits you that bit lower again. The backrest is Corbeau’s newer Sportline shape rather than the plainer Sportsman profile, with an integrated headrest, and heating or an inflatable lumbar support are both available if you want the extra comfort on a long run.
The Le Mans is the seat I point people at once a 928 is doing more than the odd track day. The bolsters at the shoulders and thighs sit deeper than anything Corbeau or Sparco make in this guide, so your body stays put mid-corner instead of sliding into the door card, and your arms are free to do the steering. It is built to order through Cobra’s Signature range: spacer fabric, vinyl or leather, contrast stitching, heating or lumbar if you want them. If you want something with a bit more character straight off the shelf, the Le Mans Heritage gives the period look without speccing your own trim. On an early car the Le Mans bolts straight to the Cobra subframe; on anything built after 1984 it needs the Planted bracket instead, since the direct-fit frame does not cover your year.
The Misano Anniversary is the top of the range in this guide, and it feels like it: taller bolsters, a wider backrest, and heating and lumbar support offered as proper options rather than bolted on afterwards. It is made to order, so allow four to six weeks rather than expecting it off the shelf, but the wait buys you a seat specced to your own colour and trim rather than whatever is on the shelf. Like the Le Mans it uses the 291mm pattern, so it bolts straight to the Cobra subframe if your 928 is an early car, and onto the Planted bracket if it is not.
Both frames bolt to the 928’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor, whichever route your car takes. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new. Between seat and frame go the sliding runners, and which one you need follows the seat’s pattern rather than the frame it is going on. Each frame listing here covers one item, so if you are fitting a pair of seats, add two to the basket and tell us the seat positions when you order if you are not sure whether the frame needs to be handed for your car.
| Your seat | Runners to order | Works on |
|---|---|---|
| Corbeau Sportsman or RRS Low Base | Corbeau 291mm sliding runners on the Cobra subframe, or Corbeau 345mm sliding runners on the Planted bracket, £117.60 a pair either way | Cobra subframe (early cars) or Planted bracket |
| Sparco GT | Sparco sliding runner kit, £78.00 a pair | Planted bracket only |
| Cobra Le Mans or Misano Anniversary | Cobra Premium runners, £84.00 a seat, 291mm handle option | Cobra subframe (early cars) or Planted bracket |
The 928 ran from 1978 to 1995 across the base car, S, S2, S4, GT and GTS, and the floor and mounting points stayed broadly the same shape throughout even as the engine grew. What changes is which frame fits: only the earliest cars fall inside the Cobra subframe’s stated window, so tell us your registration year when you order and we will confirm which route applies before anything ships.

Not on a standard floor. Both frames bolt to the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts properly and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new.
Just the early cars. The listing states coverage from August 1973 to September 1984, and the 928 itself was not built before 1977/78, so in practice this frame suits the first few years of production rather than the S2, S4, GT or GTS that followed through to 1995. If your car is a later 928, use the Planted bracket instead, which carries no year restriction on this model.
No. The Cobra subframe is built around the 291mm x 330mm pattern, and the Sparco GT is drilled at 345mm x 271mm, so it does not go on that frame at all. The Corbeau Sportsman and RRS Low Base are the exception, drilled for both patterns, so either one bolts to the Cobra subframe or the Planted bracket. If you want the GT, go straight for the Planted route.
Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. If you are planning harnesses, tell us when you order and we will make sure the whole setup works together.
The 928 ran from 1978 to 1995 across the base car, S, S2, S4, GT and GTS. The frames in this guide are listed for the model generally rather than by exact variant, so if you are not certain which one you have, tell us your registration year when you order and we will confirm fitment before it ships.
If it were my money: the Sportsman for the safest bet across any 928, since it is the cheapest seat here and it keeps both frame routes open no matter which year you own. The RRS Low Base if I were over six foot and wanted the same flexibility with a bit more comfort. The GT only if I already loved the way it looked and my waist sat inside its range, because the Planted-only route and the narrower fit make it a seat you choose for its shape rather than its convenience. The Le Mans once track days start outweighing road miles and I wanted the bolstering to match. And the Misano Anniversary if the car is staying a road GT and I wanted the interior to match the money already spent on the rest of it.
Every combination above uses parts that bolt to the 928’s factory mounting points, once you have the right frame for your car’s year. If you are between two of these seats, or between sizes, get in touch with your height and waist measurement, and tell us your registration year so we can confirm the frame route before you spend anything.
