The E46 is one of the easier BMWs to put a proper seat into, because the frame market for it is mature. The factory seats hold reasonably well by 2000s standards, but they sit you high, the side bolsters have usually gone soft by now on a car this age, and the driving position never quite matches what the chassis is capable of. Drop the seat a couple of inches on a fitting frame and the whole car feels sharper through a corner.
Most people come to us wanting either more support for track days or simply a seat that has not collapsed after twenty-plus years of use. Both routes lead to the same place: a base-mount recliner on a frame built for this chassis.

We stock a fitting frame for the E46 from two of the three brands we rate, and between them they cover every seat in this guide. A frame is the vehicle specific base that bolts to the floor in place of the standard runners, and it sets your final seat height. The E46 floor uses a raised OEM rail rather than a flat plate, which is exactly why a vehicle-specific frame is worth the money over a universal bracket. Which frame you buy decides which seats you can run, so this choice comes first.
Part 00499078-1653, £94.86 inc VAT a side. Sold individually, RHD driver and passenger listed separately. Pairs with 345mm runners and takes the R100, the R500 and the Corbeau.
Part SB007, £222.60 inc VAT a side, RHD driver and passenger. A flat base that takes any seat in this guide, paired with runners matching that seat's pattern.
Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern, and on this car there are two that matter. Sparco recliners use 345mm x 271mm, which is what the Sparco subframe is built around. Cobra and Recaro seats use different patterns again, 291mm x 330mm and 405mm x 290mm, and neither lines up with the Sparco subframe. The Corbeau RRS Low Base is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, which is why it fits the Sparco subframe directly as well as the Planted bracket. For the Cobra and the Recaro, the Planted bracket with the matching runner is the only route we sell for this car.
| Seat | Bolt pattern | Sparco subframe | Planted bracket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sparco R100 | 345 x 271 | Fits | Fits |
| Sparco R500 | 345 x 271 | Fits | Fits |
| Corbeau RRS Low Base | 291 or 345 | Fits | Fits |
| Cobra Le Mans | 291 x 330 | No | Fits |
| Recaro Sportster CS | 405 x 290 | No | Fits |
The R100 is the recliner we sell more of than any other, and on a car this age it is usually the sensible starting point. It is a compact seat, the recline knob clears the door card in a coupe, and it leaves budget for the frame. Sparco list it as suitable for all waist sizes and for drivers both over and under six foot, which matches what we see on the counter: it is a hard seat to be the wrong shape for. The open, flat base means there is no leg bolster to fight climbing in and out of a two door.
The R500 is the R100’s bigger brother. Taller backrest, more shoulder support, and dual density foam in the base and backrest that holds its shape better on a long motorway run. It keeps the same open base as the R100, so it stays easy to live with day to day, and it comes in fabric or the easy-clean Sky vinyl. Pick it over the R100 if you want more upper body support for the odd track day but are not ready for the grip of a deep bolstered seat.
The RRS Low Base is the seat to pick if you are not sure which frame you want yet, or if you are over six foot and the standard RRS eats too much of your remaining headroom in a coupe. It is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, so it bolts straight to the Sparco subframe as easily as it does the Planted bracket, and the Low Base version buys back the clearance a taller driver loses to the roofline. The backrest is Corbeau’s classic sculpted shape rather than the smoother SVR profile, which is worth knowing if you have sat in both before.
The Le Mans is the seat I point people at when the E46 does regular track evenings rather than just the odd one. The bolsters at the shoulders and thighs are much deeper than either Sparco’s, so your body stays put mid-corner and your arms do the steering instead of holding you in place. It is also built to order through Cobra’s Signature range: spacer fabric, vinyl or leather, contrast stitching, heating or lumbar if you want them. If you want something with a bit more character off the shelf, the Le Mans Heritage brings a period-correct look without speccing your own trim. Either way, this one only goes on with the Planted bracket, since the Sparco subframe does not match its pattern.
BMW owners love this seat, and on an E46 it is easy to see why. The Sportster CS holds you firmly through the shoulders and thighs without the aggressive bolster squeeze of a full bucket, so it stays comfortable on the drive to the circuit as well as on it. Recaro list it as suitable for all waist sizes and all heights, which is unusual for a seat with this much support, and the heated version is worth the extra if the E46 is still doing daily duty through winter. It is a 405mm base mount, which is wider than either Sparco pattern, so it goes on the Planted bracket with a Recaro-compatible runner rather than either subframe.
Both frames bolt to the E46’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new. Between seat and frame go the sliding runners, and they follow the same pattern logic as the frames. One ordering quirk worth knowing: both frames are listed per side, RHD driver and RHD passenger, so a pair means adding two to the basket.
| Your seat | Runners to order | Works on |
|---|---|---|
| Sparco R100 or R500 | Sparco sliding runner kit, £78.00 a pair | Sparco subframe or Planted bracket |
| Corbeau RRS Low Base | Corbeau 345mm sliding runners, £117.60 a pair | Sparco subframe or Planted bracket |
| Cobra Le Mans | Cobra Premium runners, from £84.00 a seat, 291mm handle option | Planted bracket only |
| Recaro Sportster CS | Endurance Recaro-compatible runner kit, £95.04 a seat | Planted bracket only |
The E46 covers the 3-Series from May 1998 to 2006, coupe, saloon, touring and estate. If your registration is later than 2006, you have an E90 rather than an E46, and neither frame in this guide applies. Check the production date if you are not certain which generation you have, since the changeover ran across 2005 to 2007 depending on market.

Not on a standard floor. Both frames bolt to the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts properly and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new.
No. The Sparco subframe is built around the 345mm x 271mm pattern, and the Cobra Le Mans and Recaro Sportster CS use different patterns again. The Corbeau RRS Low Base is the exception, drilled for both 291mm and 345mm. If you want the Cobra or the Recaro, go straight for the Planted bracket with the matching runner.
Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. If you are planning harnesses, tell us when you order and we will make sure the whole setup works together.
Both are listed per seat position, with RHD driver and passenger side options. A pair of seats means two frames in the basket. If anything on a listing is unclear, ask before ordering.
The E46 covers the 3-Series from May 1998 to 2006. If your car is a 2007 registration or later, it is more likely an E90, and neither frame in this guide will fit. Check the production date on your registration document if you are not sure, since the changeover ran across 2005 to 2007 depending on market and bodystyle.
If the car leans further towards track use, yes, a fixed back saves weight and holds you harder than any recliner can. We have written up which buckets fit this car in our E46 bucket seat guide. A recliner wins when the car still does the daily commute.
If it were my money: the R100 on the Sparco frame for a road car on a budget, because it does most of the job for the least outlay. The RRS Low Base if you are over six foot or you are not certain which frame route you want yet, since it keeps both open. The Le Mans on the Planted bracket if track evenings are a regular thing and you want the car built around you, in your trim. And if BMW owners keep telling you to get a Recaro, they are not wrong, the Sportster CS is the one people keep for years rather than swap out.
Every combination above uses parts that bolt straight to the E46’s factory mounting points. If you are between two of these seats, or between sizes, get in touch with your height and waist measurement and we will talk it through before you spend anything.
