Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Volkswagen Polo Mk3, including our fitting guide

The Polo Mk3 has a one-make racing series named after it, which tells you something about what the chassis is capable of. The standard seats do not match that pedigree: they sit you too high, the bolsters soften with age, and on most examples at this mileage the foam has long since stopped doing its job. A reclining sport seat on a proper fitting frame lowers your hips and gives you real lateral support through a corner. The recline adjustment stays, so the car still works for a passenger or a long run.

Two frame routes are in stock for the 6N Polo: Cobra and Sparco. The frame is the vehicle-specific adapter that replaces the standard runner assembly and bolts to the factory floor mountings. It sets your seat height and decides which bolt pattern your seat needs. Frame first, then seat.

  • Cobra subframe takes 291mm pattern seats; Sparco sub-frame takes 345mm seats
  • Cobra frame includes the sliding runner in the price; Sparco sub-frame needs a separate runner kit
  • Every seat in this guide is listed as 4 point harness compatible
  • Both routes use the factory floor mounting points, no drilling required

The Volkswagen Polo Mk3. The frame you pick decides which of the five seats below will fit it.

The two frame routes into a Polo Mk3

We stock a fitting frame for the 6N from Cobra and from Sparco. A frame is the vehicle-specific adapter that bolts to the factory floor mounting points in place of the standard runner assembly, and it sets your final seat height. The Cobra subframe is a complete kit: the base frame and the sliding runner ship in the same box. The Sparco sub-frame is the adapter bracket only, priced per side, and you pair it with a separate Sparco runner kit.

One note on the Sparco route: these sub-frames do not include a seatbelt clip anchor point. If you are keeping the standard diagonal seatbelt rather than running a harness, you will need a separate belt anchor on the seat side. Most drivers fitting them are running a harness, but it is worth knowing before you order.

291

Cobra subframe

Part SU-VW-PO3, £231.66 inc VAT each. Includes the sliding runner. Takes Cobra 291mm seats and Corbeau recliners.

345

Sparco sub-frame

Part 00499073, £87.00 inc VAT per side. Sold individually. Add a Sparco runner kit (£78.00 a pair). Takes Sparco and Corbeau seats drilled for 345mm.

The number that decides it

Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern. On this car, two patterns matter. Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm, which the Cobra subframe is built around. Sparco recliners use 345mm x 271mm, and they go on the Sparco sub-frame. Neither pattern lines up with the other frame. The exception is Corbeau: both the SVR and the RRS are drilled for both patterns, so they bolt to either frame in the table below.

Sparco R100: the everyday value pick

The R100 is the most popular recliner we sell, and for a Polo Mk3 it is usually where people start. It is a compact seat with an open base, which matters in a cabin this size. The side bolsters give you support without fighting the door card on the way in, and the recline knob clears the centre console on the cars we have fitted them to. Sparco rate it for all waist sizes and for drivers both under and over six foot, so it is hard to be the wrong shape for it. Pair it with the Sparco sub-frame and a runner kit and you have the complete setup at the lowest price point in this guide.

  • From £282.00 inc VAT, the entry price in this guide
  • All waist sizes, drivers over and under six foot
  • Cloth trim, also available in vinyl
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Sparco sub-frame route

Corbeau SVR and RRS: two styles, both frame routes

The SVR and the RRS are Corbeau’s two reclining designs, and both are drilled for 291mm and 345mm patterns. On a Polo Mk3, where you are committing to one frame brand, that dual-fit capability has genuine value: either seat works whichever frame route suits your budget. The SVR has a smoother outer shell with an integrated headrest and an optional heating element. The RRS has a more sculpted backrest and comes in a low base version that recovers a few centimetres of headroom, which helps in a compact car. Cameron reaches for the SVR for daily use; the RRS Low Base is the recommendation when headroom is tighter or the driver is on the taller side.

  • RRS single from £498.00 inc VAT; SVR pair from £1,020.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights; Low Base option available on the RRS
  • SVR: optional heating; RRS: low base version for tighter headroom
  • Listed 4 point compatible
  • Drilled for 291mm and 345mm: fits Cobra or Sparco frame route

Cobra Daytona: the Cobra everyday recliner

The Daytona is Cobra’s everyday recliner, and the one most people reach for when the Polo is doing track evenings alongside regular road use. It has more pronounced bolsters than either Sparco, so your body stays put mid-corner without you bracing, but it is not so deep that getting in and out of a small car becomes difficult. Cobra build it with a steel frame and fibreglass outer shell, and it goes straight onto the Cobra subframe where the sliding runner is already in the box. If you are deciding between the Daytona and the Stuttgart, the Daytona is the track-biased pick; the Stuttgart adds more padding and trim options for daily comfort.

  • £599.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Steel frame, fibreglass shell
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe route (sliding runner included)

Sparco R500: more support, same Sparco route

The R500 sits above the R100 with a taller backrest and more shoulder support. Dual density foam in the base and the backrest holds its shape better over a long run and gives slightly more resistance under load in a corner. It is available in fabric or the easy-clean Sky vinyl. The pattern and the frame route are the same as the R100, so if you start with the R100 and find you want more upper body support later, you can swap the seat without changing the frame. Pick it over the R100 if you do occasional track sessions and want more shoulder contact without going to the deeper bolsters of the Cobra range.

  • From £329.00 inc VAT in fabric; £349.00 in Sky vinyl
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Dual density foam base and backrest; fabric or Sky vinyl trim
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: same Sparco sub-frame route as the R100

Cobra Stuttgart: the daily driver Cobra

The Stuttgart is Cobra’s comfort-oriented recliner: slightly wider in the seat base than the Daytona, with more padding in the cushion. It is built to order through Cobra’s Signature range, which means heating, lumbar support and contrast stitching are on the options list if the Polo does all-weather commuting. The vinyl version is the most practical starting point for a car that sees wet-weather use. Like the Daytona, it goes on the Cobra subframe with the sliding runner already included in the frame price. If you are choosing between the two, the Stuttgart is the daily-use pick with comfort extras on the options list; the Daytona is the track-biased seat at a similar price.

  • From £619.00 inc VAT in vinyl; Signature and leather versions available
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Built to order: heating, lumbar and contrast stitching available
  • Listed 4 point compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe route (sliding runner included)

Getting it bolted down

Both frames bolt to the 6N Polo’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts to the manufacturer’s spec and check seat belt buckle clearance after fitting, because a sport seat often moves the buckle somewhere new. The Cobra subframe ships with its sliding runner in the box, so the frame is the only order before the seat. The Sparco sub-frame is the adapter bracket only, and you add a Sparco runner kit alongside it. Both frames are priced per seat position, so a pair of seats means two frames in the basket.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the Polo floor?

No. Both frames bolt to the 6N Polo's factory seat mounting points without any drilling. Check the seat belt buckle clearance after fitting, because a sport seat often changes where the buckle sits.

Does the Sparco sub-frame include a seatbelt anchor?

No, it does not. The Sparco sub-frames for the Polo Mk3 are listed without a seatbelt clip anchor point. If you are keeping the standard diagonal seatbelt, you will need a separate belt anchor on the seat side. Most drivers fitting them are running a harness, but it is worth sorting before you install.

Can I put a Sparco seat on the Cobra subframe?

No. The Cobra subframe is built around the 291mm x 330mm pattern, and Sparco recliners use 345mm x 271mm. The two do not line up. The Corbeau SVR and RRS are the only seats in this guide drilled for both patterns, so they bolt to either frame.

Will these seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with harness slots in the backrest. If you are planning harnesses, let us know when you order and we will make sure the whole setup works together.

Has anyone fitted a specific seat to a Polo 6N before?

We have a customer question on the blog that covers an exact seat fitment in the Polo 6N: Can I Fit The Mirco MX5 Seat Into My VW Polo 6N MK3? If you have a seat in mind that is not in this guide, ask Cameron before ordering and we will check the exact fitment.

What I would actually buy

If it were my money in a Polo Mk3: the R100 on the Sparco sub-frame for a daily driver on a budget. It covers most of what you are after at the lowest outlay, and if the car moves on, the frame is not a big investment to leave behind. The SVR or the RRS Low Base if you want both frame routes kept open or you are on the taller side. The Daytona on the Cobra subframe if your Polo does regular track evenings and you want more bolster contact than the Sparco range gives you. The Stuttgart in vinyl if the car is doing daily mileage in all weather and you want something you can wipe down, with heating on the options list. And the R500 sits between the R100 and the Cobra picks: more shoulder support than the R100, same Sparco frame route, sensible step up if the R100 feels too open.

Every setup listed here bolts straight to the 6N Polo’s factory floor. If you are between two seats or unsure about sizes, call us on 0115 9893488 and Cameron can run through the combinations before you commit.
