Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Volkswagen Golf Mk8, including our fitting guide

Most Golf Mk8 owners who come to us with a seat question have already run into the same problem: the Mk8 frame search comes up quiet. Mk7 results fill the page and forums go round in circles without landing on a definitive answer. The frame exists. Volkswagen carried the Mk7 floor mounting arrangement across to the Mk8, so the same Cobra direct-fit subframe covers both generations. We list it separately under the Mk8 because that is what owners search, and enough people have come to us assuming no frame existed that it seemed worth saying plainly.

That leaves one frame route for the Mk8 at the moment, Cobra’s 291mm pattern. The runner is included in the price, which changes the total cost comparison against Sparco and Planted. Before ordering for a road car, one thing is worth sorting in advance: the Golf Mk8 factory seats carry both airbag wiring and a seat occupancy sensor. Sorting the wiring before the seat goes in is much easier than coming back to it afterwards, and the team will walk through it when you ring.

  • One Cobra subframe for the Mk8: bolts to the factory floor mounting points, no drilling
  • Runner included in the frame price, no separate purchase needed for any seat in this guide
  • All five seats listed as 4 point harness compatible
  • Golf Mk8 factory seats carry airbag and occupancy sensor wiring: raise this with us before ordering for a road car

The Cobra frame route

One subframe covers the Golf Mk8: a Cobra direct-fit base that bolts to the factory seat mounting points under each position. Volkswagen carried the Mk7 floor geometry into the Mk8, so the Cobra frame for the Mk8 uses the same 291mm mounting pattern as the Mk7 unit, listed separately here because the Mk8 is what people search. Every seat in this guide works on this one frame. The runner is included in the frame price, so the total for driver and passenger sides is £255.00 each, £510.00 for the pair, before seats.

Cobra direct fit subframe

£255.00 inc VAT per side, £510.00 for the pair. Runner included in the price. Bolts to the Mk8 factory floor mounting points, no drilling on a standard floor. Takes Cobra recliners on the native 291mm pattern and Corbeau recliners via the 291mm mounting option.

The number that decides it

Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern. On the Mk8, one pattern matters: 291mm x 330mm, which is what the Cobra subframe is built for. The Corbeau PSR and SVR carry 291mm mounting holes alongside their 345mm option, which is why they appear in a cobra-only guide. There is no routing decision on this car. Pick the seat first; the frame follows automatically.

Corbeau PSR: the pair, the starting point

The PSR is the seat we sell more pairs of than anything else on a reclining install. £558 for both seats: steel frame, cloth trim, recline and tilt. The bolsters are lower than the Cobra range or the SVR, which means climbing in and out of the Golf without fighting the side support. On a Golf used for both daily driving and the occasional circuit session, the PSR does most of the job without the Cobra’s built-to-order lead time.

The Corbeau is drilled for 291mm and 345mm, which keeps routing options open in theory, though the Golf Mk8 has one frame route listed at the moment. The per-seat cost works out more competitively than it looks against individual Cobra orders once you account for fitting both sides.

  • £558.00 inc VAT for both seats
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights suitable
  • Cloth trim, black, heated version available
  • Listed 4 point harness compatible
  • Fits Cobra subframe via 291mm mounting holes

Cobra Daytona: built to order, widest Cobra recliner

The Daytona is Cobra’s widest recliner at 580mm across the shoulders, and Cobra build it to order in whatever trim matches the car. On a Golf Mk8, which runs a well-finished interior even in base spec, a built-to-order seat in matched trim works better than an off-the-shelf colour that argues with the door card. Cloth, vinyl or leather, any one or two colour combination, heating and lumbar as factory options. The bolstering sits between the PSR and the Le Mans Carbon: more support than Corbeau’s own units, less committed through a corner than the Le Mans.

The Tartan Edition is the same seat in eight Scottish tartan weave patterns. Ordered from finished trim combinations rather than a custom spec, so no design decisions and no extra lead time beyond the standard build-to-order process. If you want the Daytona without going through the colour choice, this covers it.

  • From £599.00 inc VAT, built to order in your trim; Tartan Edition from £899.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights suitable, 13.5kg, 865mm tall
  • Cloth, vinyl or leather; heating and lumbar available as factory options
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern, 580mm wide
  • Listed 4 point harness compatible

Cobra Le Mans Carbon Edition: the support pick

The Le Mans Carbon is the seat for regular circuit use. The shoulder and thigh bolsters are deeper than the Daytona and noticeably deeper than the PSR: on a Golf Mk8 GTI or R doing track evenings, the difference in how much work the seat does versus how much the driver does is clear by the second session. The backrest carries a carbon effect panel that shows through the Golf’s cabin from outside the car; on a car whose owner has finished the rest of it carefully, this tends to fit the overall build.

Built to order, four to six weeks. The heating option is worth considering if the Golf covers winter driving. At 13.4kg it is slightly lighter than the Daytona and sits on a narrower 540mm base, which matters if cabin space is tight on the passenger side.

  • £714.00 inc VAT, made to order, allow 4 to 6 weeks
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights suitable, 13.4kg, 820mm tall
  • Carbon effect backrest panel, built to order in Cobra Signature trim
  • Optional heating available
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern, 540mm wide

Corbeau SVR and RRS: the pair, two backrest styles

The SVR and the RRS are Corbeau’s two premium reclining styles. The base is the same unit. The backrest is where they differ. The SVR has a taller, open-top back that clears a 4 point harness without adjusting the routing. The RRS runs Corbeau’s sculpted Sportline shape with an integrated headrest, which is the classic Corbeau look but needs thought if you are running harnesses: the headrest sits between the straps unless you plan the routing before fitting. If you are tracking the Golf with a harness, go for the SVR. Both come as a pair, driver and passenger in one order.

  • Corbeau SVR pair £1,020.00 inc VAT; Corbeau Sportline RRS pair £984.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights suitable
  • SVR: open-top back; RRS: sculpted backrest with integrated headrest
  • Listed 4 point harness compatible
  • Fits Cobra subframe via 291mm mounting holes

Cobra Misano Anniversary: the built-to-order premium

The Misano Anniversary is the seat you order when the rest of the car has been finished to the same standard. At 11.5kg it is the lightest seat in this guide: the Le Mans Carbon is 13.4kg, the Daytona 13.5kg. The weight difference is relevant on a Golf Mk8 R where the owner knows the original specification precisely.

Cobra build it in any one or two colour leather, diamond quilted to the centre panels with a carbon back panel. The Cobra Signature trim system can match the Golf’s interior colours exactly. Allow four to six weeks from order. Heating and lumbar are available as factory options.

  • From £1,649.00 inc VAT, made to order in your leather specification, allow 4 to 6 weeks
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights suitable, 11.5kg, 885mm tall, 590mm wide
  • Leather, diamond quilted centres, carbon back panel
  • Heating and lumbar available as factory options
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern

Getting it bolted down

The Cobra subframe bolts to the Golf Mk8 factory seat mounting points: no drilling, no modification to a standard floor. The sliding runner is included in the frame price. For all five seats in this guide, the subframe is the only mounting purchase needed alongside the seat itself. The pair product covers driver and passenger positions. Per side: £255.00 inc VAT. Both sides: £510.00 inc VAT.

Before fitting a sport seat in a Golf Mk8: the factory seats carry airbag wiring and a seat occupancy sensor. Both need resolving at the point of fitting, not after. If you are doing the installation yourself, ring the team on 0115 9893488 before you start and we will go through what the wiring involves on this car. That conversation before the seat goes in saves a lot of time.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the floor of my Golf Mk8?

No. The Cobra direct-fit subframe bolts to the factory seat mounting points on a standard Mk8. No modification to the floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check the seat belt buckle clearance after fitting, because a sport seat often changes where the buckle sits.

Why is there only one frame route for this car?

The Golf Mk8 kept the Mk7's floor mounting geometry, and Cobra list one direct-fit subframe for it. Sparco and Planted Technology have not released frames for the Mk8 generation yet. When they do, we will update this guide. In the meantime, the Cobra frame covers every seat in this guide and the runner is included in the price.

Do all five seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. If you are fitting a harness, mention it when you order and we will confirm the whole setup works together on the Mk8. The Corbeau SVR is the easier harness fit due to its open-top back; the RRS headrest needs routing thought.

What about the airbag and seat occupancy wiring?

The Golf Mk8 factory seats carry both airbag wiring and a seat occupancy sensor. Moving to a sport seat means the airbag circuit changes and the occupancy sensor is no longer read by the standard unit. On a road car this will trigger a warning light and affects the airbag system. It is a solvable problem at the point of installation, not after, so raise it with us before you order if you are fitting to a road-registered car. Ring 0115 9893488 and we will go through what it involves for your specific setup.

Would fixed bucket seats work in my Golf Mk8?

Fixed buckets give more support than recliners at the cost of the backrest angle adjustment. The Golf Mk7 uses the same floor mounting arrangement as the Mk8, and we have a customer question covering the Sparco Sprint bucket seat installation on the Mk7 if you want to see how that approach works before deciding. If you are using the car daily, a recliner covers more scenarios. If it is primarily a track car, a fixed bucket is worth the conversation.

What I would actually buy

If it were my money: the Corbeau PSR pair on the Cobra subframe for a Golf used daily. Both sides for £558, both on the same 291mm runner that comes with the frame at £510 for the pair, and the PSR’s lower bolster profile suits the commute as much as it suits a lap of Cadwell Park. If the car does regular track evenings, step up to the Cobra Le Mans Carbon: the bolstering is genuinely different through a fast corner and the built-to-order trim means the seat belongs in the car.

Cameron’s read on the Daytona versus the Le Mans Carbon for a Golf: wider drivers prefer the Daytona for the room at the shoulder, drivers who want grip over comfort prefer the Le Mans Carbon for the deeper bolsters. The SVR or RRS pair if you want the higher Corbeau build quality without the Cobra lead time, and the SVR specifically if you are planning harnesses. The Misano Anniversary if the rest of the car has been specced to that standard.

If you are fitting a road car and have not dealt with the Mk8 airbag wiring before, ring the showroom on 0115 9893488 before the seat goes in.
