Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Volkswagen Golf Mk5 R32, including our fitting guide

The Golf Mk5 R32 has a 3.2-litre narrow-angle VR6 that sounds unlike anything else in the Golf range, and a 4Motion system that actually uses the torque rather than just managing it. The cars that survive have owners who use them. The factory seats are adequate on the road, but put an R32 through a circuit session and the side bolsters are the first thing that lets you down. They soften over the years and the 4Motion cornering loads are high enough to notice the difference.

A reclining sport seat adds proper lateral support while keeping the recline you need for everyday driving. You do not give up the backrest adjustment you would with a fixed bucket, which matters on a car that covers real miles outside the circuit gates. The one Cobra subframe we list for the R32 covers all five seats below, and the runner is included in the frame price.

  • One Cobra subframe: bolts to the R32 factory mounting points, no drilling
  • Runner included in the frame price, no separate purchase for any seat in this guide
  • All five seats listed as 4 point harness compatible
  • The standard Golf Mk5 has three frame routes; the R32 has its own specific subframe

The Golf Mk5 R32. One Cobra direct-fit subframe covers the whole seat list below.

The Cobra frame route

One subframe covers the Golf Mk5 R32: a Cobra direct-fit base that bolts to the factory mounting points under each seat position. It is listed specifically for the R32 chassis, not the broader Mk5 range. The standard Golf Mk5 carries Cobra, Sparco and Planted Technology frame options across three bolt patterns; the R32 has its own mounting geometry and its own part, so do not swap in a standard Mk5 frame and expect it to sit correctly. Every seat in this guide works on the one R32 frame.

291

Cobra direct fit subframe

Part 15447, £231.66 inc VAT per side. Runner included in the price. Takes Cobra recliners on their native 291mm pattern and Corbeau recliners via the 291mm mounting option. Tell Cobra the seat at checkout and they confirm the runner configuration.

The number that decides it

Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern. On the R32, one pattern matters: 291mm x 330mm, which is what the Cobra subframe is built around. The Corbeau PSR and SVR carry 291mm mounting holes alongside their 345mm option, which is why they appear in a cobra-only guide. All five seats route through the same single frame. There is no trade-off between frame choice and seat choice on this car.

One route, five seatsAll five seats in this guide work on the same Cobra subframe via the 291mm runner supplied with it. Pick the seat first; the frame follows automatically.

Corbeau PSR: the pair, the starting point

The PSR is the seat we sell more pairs of than anything else on a straightforward reclining install. £558 for both seats: steel frame, cloth trim, recline and tilt. The bolsters are lower than the SVR or the Cobra range, which means getting in and out of the Golf without fighting the side support. It does the job on road driving and occasional circuit sessions without asking you to commit to a seat that dominates the cabin. Most people who fit the PSR keep it for years rather than step up, because for mixed road and track use the value is hard to argue against.

  • £558.00 inc VAT for both seats
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights suitable
  • Cloth trim, black
  • Listed 4 point harness compatible
  • Fits Cobra subframe via 291mm mounting holes

Driver size and fitment. Published for 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights. The lower bolster profile of the PSR means fit varies less between body types than a deep-bolstered seat. If you are at the top of that waist range, the Daytona further down this page runs 580mm across the shoulder and is worth comparing directly.

Cobra Daytona: the widest Cobra recliner

The Daytona is the widest recliner Cobra make: 580mm across at the shoulders on a 530mm base, against 540mm for the Le Mans. If you have sat in a Cobra recliner and found it close across the shoulders, this is the one that answers it. Cobra build it to order in whatever trim you specify: cloth, vinyl or leather, any one or two colour combination, heating and lumbar available as factory options. On an R32, where the rest of the interior is often finished carefully, built-to-order trim is worth thinking about rather than defaulting to the off-the-shelf option.

  • From £598.99 inc VAT, built to order in your trim
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights suitable
  • Cloth, vinyl or leather, colour choice at order
  • Heating and lumbar available as factory options
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern, 580mm wide, 13.5kg

Driver size and fitment. Published for 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights. At 580mm across the shoulder and 865mm tall on a 530mm base, the Daytona is the roomiest seat on this list. If you are at the larger end of the waist range and want a seat that accommodates rather than grips, start here.

Cobra Le Mans: the support pick

The Le Mans is where bolstering becomes the seat’s main feature. Shoulder and thigh support are much firmer than the Daytona or the PSR, and on a circuit the difference is straightforward: you steer the car rather than brace against it. It is built to order in the same Cobra trim range as the Daytona. If you want the same physical seat without a manufacturer’s badge on the centre panel, the Heritage version has fluted centre panels and nothing else on the trim, which suits a clean interior build. The mounting geometry and the frame route are the same on either variant.

  • Le Mans from £618.99 inc VAT, Heritage from £648.99 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights suitable
  • Built to order, Heritage has fluted centres with no badging
  • Listed 4 point harness compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern, 540mm wide, 13.4kg

Driver size and fitment. Published for 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights. At 540mm across and 820mm tall, the Le Mans is narrower and lower than the Daytona. The Heritage is the same seat with period-style fluting and no badge on the trim.

Corbeau Sportline SVR: the pair, vinyl trim

The SVR is Corbeau’s top reclining seat and the jump in support over the PSR is clear. More shoulder and hip bolstering, vinyl trim, and a seat height that suits the Golf Mk5 cabin well on both sides. Sold as a pair at £1,020 for the two, which makes the per-seat cost more competitive than individual Cobra prices when you work it out. The heated version is £1,248 for the pair if the R32 is still doing regular winter driving: the base vinyl pair has no heating option, so the decision is made at the point of ordering rather than added later.

  • £1,020.00 inc VAT for the pair, vinyl trim
  • Heated pair available at £1,248.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights suitable
  • Listed 4 point harness compatible
  • Fits Cobra subframe via 291mm mounting holes

Driver size and fitment. Published for 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights. The SVR carries higher side bolsters than the PSR and holds the driver more positively through corners. If you are tracking the car and the PSR’s lower bolster profile is not enough, this is the step up without moving to a single-seat Cobra order.

Cobra Misano Anniversary: the built-to-order premium

The Misano Anniversary is the seat you order when the rest of the car has been built to a standard. Cobra trim it in any one or two colour leather combination, diamond quilted to the centre panels with a carbon backrest. The quilting is a period detail done in a modern material: on a finished cabin it looks specified with the car rather than added afterwards. Allow four to six weeks; this is made to order at the Cobra factory. At 11.5kg it is the lightest seat on this list, and it sits on the 520mm Le Mans family base rather than the wider Daytona geometry.

  • From £1,648.99 inc VAT, made to order in your leather specification
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights suitable
  • Leather, diamond quilted centres, carbon backrest
  • Heating and lumbar available as factory options, allow 4 to 6 weeks
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern, 590mm wide across shoulder, 11.5kg

Driver size and fitment. Published for 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights. The Misano is 590mm across the shoulder and 885mm tall on a 520mm base: slightly wider than the Le Mans at the shoulder, narrower than the Daytona at the base. The seat weight at 11.5kg is the lowest on this list.

Getting it bolted down

The Cobra subframe bolts to the Golf Mk5 R32 factory floor mounting points: no drilling, no modification to a standard car. The sliding runner is included in the frame price, so nothing extra is needed for any of the five seats in this guide. Cobra, Corbeau, it makes no difference: all five mount via the 291mm runner that comes with the frame. The frame is priced per side: £231.66 inc VAT for driver or passenger, so a full pair for both positions totals £463.32 inc VAT before seats. Tell Cobra the seat at checkout and they confirm the runner configuration for that combination.

The frame is listed specifically for the R32 chassis. If you are fitting a standard Golf Mk5 GTI, TSI or TDI, see the Golf Mk5 reclining seat guide: that car has three frame brands to work across and opens up more seat choices.

Common questions

Does fitting the Cobra subframe mean drilling the R32 floor?

No. The direct-fit subframe bolts to the factory seat mounting points on a standard R32. There is no modification to the floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check the seat belt buckle clearance after fitting, because a sport seat often changes where the buckle sits.

Can I use a standard Golf Mk5 subframe on an R32?

The frames are listed separately for a reason. The R32 uses Cobra part 15447, listed specifically for that chassis. The standard Golf Mk5 carries Cobra, Sparco and Planted Technology frame options. If you are not sure which variant or generation you have, check the production date and VIN plate before ordering.

Do all five seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. If you are fitting a harness, let us know when ordering and we will confirm the full setup works together on the R32.

Is there a bucket seat guide for the Golf Mk5 R32?

Not specifically for the R32. The Golf Mk5 reclining guide covers the standard Mk5 with its three frame routes and broader seat options. For the R32 specifically, the Cobra subframe in this guide also takes Cobra bucket seats alongside the recliners. Call us on 0115 9893488 and we will talk through whether a bucket or a recliner suits how you are using the car.

How long does a built-to-order Cobra seat take?

The Cobra Misano Anniversary states a four to six week lead time. The Daytona and Le Mans are also built to order but with shorter turnaround; ask at the time of ordering and we will confirm what is realistic for your spec. The Corbeau PSR and SVR are stock items and ship within the normal delivery window.

What I would actually buy

For most R32 owners using the car for road driving with occasional circuit sessions, the Corbeau PSR pair on the Cobra subframe is the combination I keep coming back to. £558 for both seats plus £463 for the frames gets you there for just over a thousand all in, and the PSR does most of what the car needs on the road without the Cobra’s built-to-order lead time.

If track days are regular rather than occasional, step up to the Cobra Le Mans. The bolstering is genuinely better for sustained cornering loads, and building it to your trim means the seat works with the car rather than competing with it. Cameron’s read on the Misano Anniversary: the seat belongs in a car where the rest of the interior has been finished, and the R32 is the right chassis for it. Give us a ring on 0115 9893488 with your height and waist measurement and we will confirm the combination before anything is ordered.
