The latest Safety Devices Proton roll cage lineup and definitive guide
Safety Devices roll cages
There is one thing on the Proton listings that is not on any other Safety Devices page we run, and it is worth the whole article on its own. On the Satria full cage, the design option you pick is what makes the cage competition legal or not. Safety Devices say so in the option names, in brackets, and most people never scroll far enough to read them.
Same part number. Same £725. Tick one option and it is homologated. Tick another and the listing itself says not for competition use.
- Seven cages across the Satria and the Sport Coupe, from £438 to £960
- On the Satria full cage, the design option decides competition eligibility
- The Sport Coupe splits into single door bar and cross door bar part numbers
- Every cage here is steel and bolt-in

The Proton range at a glance
Two cars and seven part numbers, which is a lot of choice for a range this size. Most of that comes from the Sport Coupe being sold in two door bar configurations.
| Car | Part number | Cage | Price | Listed approval |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Proton Satria | Q042 | 12 point bolt-in, single door bars | £725 | FIA, MSA, road and track |
| Proton Satria | Q042-Rear | Bolt-in rear | £438 | Road and track |
| Proton Satria | RBQ130 5SSS | 12 point bolt-in rear | £755 | Road and track |
| Proton Sport Coupe | Q053 | 12 point bolt-in, single door bars | £736 | FIA and MSA approved |
| Proton Sport Coupe | Q053-Rear | Bolt-in rear, single door bars | £450 | FIA and MSA approved |
| Proton Sport Coupe | Q053-CrossDB | 12 point bolt-in, cross door bars | £960 | FIA and MSA approved |
| Proton Sport Coupe | Q053-RBQ053 5SXX | Bolt-in rear, cross door bars | £627 | FIA and MSA approved |
Prices are what the listings show today and can move. The approval column lists what each individual listing states. On the Satria full cage the listing carries all three, which is explained in the next section, and it is the reason that row looks odd.
On the Satria, the design option decides eligibility
The Q042 full cage for the Satria is £725 and offers six design options. Safety Devices label them, and the labels do the work:
- Cross diagonal and harness bar (homologated)
- Cross diagonal and harness bar, with door bars (homologated)
- Single fixed diagonal (not for competition use)
- Single fixed diagonal and door bars (not for competition use)
- Single fixed diagonal and harness bar (not for competition use)
- Single fixed diagonal and harness bar, with door bars (not for competition)
The two cross diagonal builds are the homologated ones. The four single fixed diagonal builds are the road and track ones. It is the same cage, the same price and the same box on a pallet, and the only thing separating a car that will pass scrutineering from one that will not is which line you clicked at checkout.
That is genuinely unusual. Most cage listings state one approval for the whole product and leave you to work out the rest. This one is explicit, which is helpful once you know to look and expensive if you do not.
Read the option names before you check outIf the Satria is going to be scrutineered, you want one of the two cross diagonal options. If you are building a road and track car and want the easiest one to live with, the single fixed diagonal builds are there for exactly that. Tell us which you are doing and we will confirm it before the order goes through.
The Sport Coupe comes in two door bar configurations
The Sport Coupe is not one cage with options. It is two different part numbers, and the gap between them is real money.
Q053 is the single door bar cage at £736. Q053-CrossDB is the cross door bar cage at £960. The rear cages follow the same split, £450 for the single door bar version against £627 for the one built to work with cross door bars.
Cross door bars are an X across the door aperture rather than one or two straight tubes. More protection in a side impact, more tube, and a smaller hole to get yourself through. On a car you drive to the circuit that last point is not a small consideration.
The important part is that the rear cage has to match. A rear cage built for cross door bars is a different part from one built for single door bars, so if you are buying front and rear, buy the matching pair.
The Satria has two rear cages at very different money
Q042-Rear is £438. The 12 point rear cage, RBQ130 5SSS, is £755. Both are rear cages for a Satria and there is £317 between them.
The 12 point is the more substantial build, with a cross diagonal and harness bar in its design. The £438 cage covers the single fixed diagonal builds as well as the cross diagonal one. Both are listed road and track rather than homologated, so on the rear cages the choice is about how much structure you want rather than about eligibility.
The full cages
Three full cages: the Satria, and the Sport Coupe in both door bar configurations. All steel, all bolt-in, all cut for the shell.

What the rest of the design options change
Setting the homologation labels aside, the underlying choices are the same ones every Safety Devices cage offers.
- Single fixed diagonal. One brace across the main hoop, stopping it folding sideways.
- Cross diagonal. Two braces forming an X, stiffer and the basis of both homologated Satria builds.
- Harness bar. A proper shoulder strap anchorage at the right height, which the standard belt mounts in a small hatchback cannot give you.
- Tunnel brace, lower backstays. Both appear in the Sport Coupe designs and tie the cage into more of the floor.
⚙
Bolt-in
Mounts on spreader plates through the floor and sills. No welding, nothing permanent, and it can come back out if the car is sold on standard. This is what most road and track day cars run.
▢
Weld-in
Welded straight to the shell, which gives a stiffer car and a better load path into the structure. It wants a motorsport fabricator and the interior usually has to come out. Permanent once it is in.
Pad anything a helmet can reachWe do not stock FIA rated roll bar padding at present, so source it alongside the cage. On a small hatchback the main hoop and the door bars are both close to your head, so plan the padding at the same time as the cage rather than as an afterthought.
💬
Not sure which oneTell us what the car is for and we will pick the option
On the Satria that one answer decides which design option you need, and on the Sport Coupe it decides which of two part numbers you are buying. Cameron works out the fit on these, so send the registration and what you run the car in.
The harness the cage is there to anchor
The harness bar option exists so the shoulder straps have something to mount to at the right height and angle. It is also the difference between the homologated and non homologated Satria builds carrying one, which tells you how the people who write the regulations think about it.

Common questions
Which Satria cage option do I need for competition?
One of the two cross diagonal builds. Safety Devices mark those “(homologated)” in the design options and mark the four single fixed diagonal builds “(not for competition use)”. It is the same part number and the same price either way, so the option you select is the whole difference.
What is the difference between the two Sport Coupe cages?
Q053 at £736 is built for single door bars and Q053-CrossDB at £960 is built for cross door bars. They are separate part numbers, not options on one product, and the rear cages split the same way.
Do I have to match the rear cage to the front?
On the Sport Coupe, yes. The rear cage built for cross door bars is a different part from the one built for single door bars. Buy the matching pair or ask us to check the combination before you order.
Why are there two Satria rear cages?
Q042-Rear at £438 and the 12 point rear at £755 are different builds. The 12 point carries more tube. Both are listed road and track, so the choice is about structure rather than eligibility.
Can I fit these myself?
Every Proton cage here is bolt-in and mounts on spreader plates through the floor and sills, so a competent home mechanic can. Dry fit the whole thing before anything is permanent, especially if you have gone for cross door bars, and check you can still get out in a helmet.
Is there a weld-in Proton cage?
Not in the range we hold. All seven bolt in. If your class requires a welded cage, tell us the class and we will look at what is available.
