Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Mazda MX-5 Mk1 and Mk2, including our fitting guide

The MX-5 is a car that rewards feel more than outright power, and the factory seats reflect that: comfortable enough for a long run but without the lateral support to match how the chassis handles a fast corner. That is the conversation we have most often with MX-5 owners in the showroom. The second one is with taller drivers who find the standard seat puts them too high once a rollbar or half cage is in.

This guide covers the five reclining seats we recommend for the Mk1 NA (1989 to 1997) and Mk2 NB (1998 to 2005). The MX-5 has a distinctive H-shaped sliding frame on the floor, and the Cobra adaptor bars (14306) are built for it specifically. They bolt onto the top of the existing H-frame rather than replacing it, so the factory forward and back adjustment carries over to the new seat. No separate runner kit needed.

  • One frame route in stock for the MX-5: Cobra H-frame adaptor bars, £44 a set inc VAT per seat
  • The adaptors sit on top of the existing H-shaped floor frame and preserve factory seat sliding
  • All seats in this guide use the 291mm x 330mm Cobra bolt pattern; the Corbeau PSR is the one confirmed non-Cobra fit
  • The original H-frame must be in sound condition before fitting; inspect it before ordering

The H-frame adaptor route

Most cars in this programme need a replacement subframe that bolts to the floor in place of the factory seat rails. The MX-5 works differently. The Mk1 and Mk2 both use an H-shaped sliding frame that runs between the seat and the floor, and the Cobra adaptor bars (14306) bolt to the top of that existing frame rather than removing it. The H-frame continues to do the sliding, so the factory seat adjustment carries over to the new seat. That is a genuine practical benefit on a car people drive every day: you keep the position range you are used to, and there are no additional runners to source and fit.

Cobra H-frame adaptor bars

Part 14306, £44.00 inc VAT a set. One set per seat. Bolts to the car's existing H-shaped sliding frame. Takes any seat with the 291mm x 330mm Cobra pattern. The Corbeau PSR also fits, drilled for both the Cobra and Sparco patterns.

Check the H-frame before orderingThe adaptor bars bolt to the original frame and rely on it for rigidity. If the H-frame is bent, corroded or missing, the adaptors will not sit flat and the seat will not be secure. Inspect it before you order. If there is any doubt, get in touch and we can advise before you buy.

The bolt pattern that matters

Every seat in this guide bolts to the adaptor bars through a base mount pattern. Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm, and all four Cobra seats here share that measurement. The one exception is the Corbeau PSR, which Corbeau drill for both the Cobra 291mm and the Sparco 345mm patterns. That makes the PSR the only non-Cobra seat we can confirm fits on the MX-5 H-frame adaptor route. A Sparco recliner on its own, for instance, would not work here because its pattern does not line up with the Cobra bars.

Corbeau PSR: the confirmed non-Cobra fit

The Corbeau PSR is the one recliner outside the Cobra family that we can confirm fits the MX-5 H-frame adaptor bars. Corbeau drill the PSR for both the 291mm Cobra pattern and the 345mm Sparco pattern, which is how it works here. We verified the installation on a Mk1 NA and wrote up the full process, so there is already a Corbeau PSR MX-5 fitting guide on the site covering exactly this combination. If the PSR is the seat you want, read that alongside this guide.

It comes as a pair, both seats in one order at £558 inc VAT. Individual seats are available at £279 each if only one side needs replacing, though most customers do both sides when the conversion is right.

  • Pair £558.00 inc VAT; £279.00 each individually
  • Drilled for both 291mm Cobra and 345mm Sparco patterns
  • Confirmed fit on Mazda MX-5 Mk1 NA with H-frame adaptor bars
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • Full fitting guide at sportseats4u.co.uk for this exact combination

Cobra Daytona: the support pick

The Daytona is the seat Cameron puts most MX-5 customers in when they want proper lateral support for track work. The bolsters at the shoulders and thighs are deeper than anything else in this guide, so your body stays put through the quick stuff and your arms do the steering. It is also where the Cobra Signature range starts: you can have the Daytona in any trim combination, from plain black cloth through to two-tone leather with contrast stitching, and there is a heating and lumbar option if the car covers winter miles. The Tartan Edition is the ready-to-order version for anyone who wants the distinctive look without speccing it from scratch.

  • £599.00 inc VAT, built to order in your trim choice
  • Tartan Edition £899.00 inc VAT as a ready-configured option
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights; 13.5kg; 865mm tall and 580mm wide
  • Cobra Signature trim options; optional heating and lumbar
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern, fits the Cobra H-frame adaptor bars

Cobra Le Mans and Le Mans Heritage: the long-distance pick

Where the Daytona holds you hard, the Le Mans works over distance. The bolstering is less aggressive, the base cushion is longer, and the overall shape suits a driver who wants the car tighter through the bends without the seat announcing itself every time they get in. It is the seat that gets recommended when the MX-5 is as much a weekend touring car as it is a track car. The Heritage version swaps the standard centre panel for a tartan insert; same structure underneath, more character on the outside. At £649 inc VAT it is a small step up from the Le Mans at £619.

  • Le Mans £619.00 inc VAT; Le Mans Heritage £649.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights
  • Longer base cushion than the Daytona; less aggressive shoulder bolstering
  • Heritage adds a tartan centre panel, same seat structure
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern, fits the Cobra H-frame adaptor bars

Cobra Le Mans Carbon Edition: the weight-saving pick

The Le Mans Carbon Edition is the Le Mans for owners where weight is part of the brief. The carbon outer shell reduces the seat weight and stiffens the backrest compared to the standard shell, so there is less flex under lateral load. On a car where the appeal is partly in how light it feels, that is a genuine argument rather than a spec-sheet detail. The carbon weave is also visible on the outer shell rather than hidden underneath trim, which suits the MX-5’s character. At £714 inc VAT it sits between the Heritage and the Misano Anniversary in the lineup.

  • £714.00 inc VAT
  • Carbon outer shell; stiffer backrest than the standard Le Mans
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern, fits the Cobra H-frame adaptor bars

Cobra Misano Anniversary: the premium pick

The Misano Anniversary is the best reclining seat Cobra make, and the one we point at MX-5 owners who want the seat to feel as though the car was built around it. The bolsters are deep, the cushioning is where the money went, and despite being the most substantial seat in this guide it is also the lightest at 11.5kg. It comes through the same Cobra Signature trim system as the Daytona, so the colour, material, stitching and options are yours to configure. At £1649 inc VAT it is at the top of the list. In the showroom, nobody who has sat in one has walked out asking for the cheaper seat instead.

  • £1649.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waist, all heights; 11.5kg; 885mm tall and 590mm wide
  • Cobra Signature trim: fabric, vinyl or leather in any colour combination
  • Optional heating and lumbar support
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern, fits the Cobra H-frame adaptor bars

Getting it bolted down

The Cobra H-frame adaptor bars (14306) come as a set of two bars per seat. They bolt to the top of the car’s existing H-shaped floor frame, and the seat bolts onto the bars. The H-frame does the sliding, so the factory forward and back adjustment carries over to the new seat. There are no additional runners to order for any of the seats in this guide on this route.

Before fitting: confirm the H-frame is clean and undamaged. Torque the adaptor bar bolts to the frame, then torque the seat bolts to the adaptors. Check seat belt buckle clearance with the seat in the furthest forward position before driving, because a sport seat often relocates the buckle relative to where the standard seat left it.

The Cobra seats in this guide are listed individually; fitting both sides of the car means two orders. The Corbeau PSR is the exception and comes as a named pair, both seats in one order at £558 inc VAT.

Common questions

Do the Cobra adaptor bars work on both Mk1 NA and Mk2 NB?

Yes. The Cobra H-frame adaptor bars (14306) are listed for the Mazda MX-5 H Frame, which covers both the Mk1 NA (1989 to 1997) and Mk2 NB (1998 to 2005). Both generations use the H-shaped floor frame. If your car has had floor work or the H-frame has been removed, check before ordering.

Do I need sliding runners as well as the adaptor bars?

No. The adaptor bars bolt onto the existing H-frame, and the H-frame itself provides the sliding movement. The factory forward and back adjustment carries over to the new seat. You do not need a separate runner kit, and adding one is not part of this fitment route.

Can I fit a Sparco seat on the Cobra adaptor bars?

No. Cobra adaptor bars accept the 291mm x 330mm Cobra bolt pattern. Sparco recliners use a different pattern (345mm x 271mm), so a standard Sparco seat will not bolt to these bars. The Corbeau PSR is the only non-Cobra seat confirmed to work here, because Corbeau drill it for both patterns. If you have a seat in mind that is not in this guide, contact us before you buy and we will check the bolt pattern.

What condition does the H-frame need to be in?

The adaptor bars bolt to the top of the existing H-frame and rely on it for the seat's rigidity and for the sliding function. If the H-frame is bent, corroded or damaged, the adaptors will not sit flat and the seat will not be secure. Inspect the H-frame before you order. If there is any doubt, contact us and we can advise whether an alternative mounting solution exists for your car.

Will these seats take a harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by the manufacturer as 4 point harness compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. Fitting a harness on a road car brings additional requirements: a harness-compatible seat, the correct eyebolts or harness bar, and proper lap belt anchorage. If you are planning harnesses, mention it when you order and we will make sure the whole setup works together before anything goes in the car.

What I would actually buy

The Corbeau PSR is the seat to start with if you want the decision already made. There is a full fitting guide for this exact combination on an MX-5 already on the site, the pair price covers both sides of the car in one order, and you know before you buy that it works. That is worth something on a conversion where the frame route is the unusual one.

For a single seat on the Cobra route, the Daytona. The bolsters are deeper than anything else at that price and the Signature range means you can have it in whatever trim fits the car. The Le Mans is the right call if the MX-5 also covers long distances or touring runs: less aggressive than the Daytona, better over time in the base. The Carbon Edition is the Le Mans with a lighter shell for owners where the weight saving is a real number, not a marketing one. And the Misano Anniversary is the best seat in this guide. There is not a more honest way to put it.

Cameron works out which of these suits a specific car and driver, one conversation at a time. If you are between two seats or not sure which way to go on this car, call 0115 9893488 and we will talk it through before you spend anything.
