The E30 is one of those cars where the aftermarket has largely agreed: it is worth doing properly. Planted Technology put a floor-to-seat bracket in production for the 1982 to 1991 3 Series specifically because enough people are driving these as enthusiast cars and not leaving them as barn finds, and the original Recaro Sports fitted to some variants are worth good money on their own, so they come out carefully when the car changes hands.
This guide works from that single bracket. One frame, two runner options depending on the seat you choose, and a top five that runs from an entry-level pair under £600 to Recaro’s dedicated BMW seat at over £1,500. Cameron has fitted enough of these to know which combination suits which E30 owner, and the answer almost always comes down to how the car is being used.

For the E30 on the standard 1982 to 1991 chassis, there is one frame route for the E30: the Planted Technology bracket, part SB034, which bolts to the factory mounting points so nothing in the floor needs cutting. Nine years on one bracket reflects how little BMW changed the E30 floor across the run, and it means one part covers the whole production run regardless of engine or trim. The bracket is handed, with RHD driver and passenger side versions listed separately, so a pair of seats means two brackets in the basket. Floor condition on an E30 this age is worth checking before you spend anything: these rust, and if the structure around the mounting points is soft, get it sorted first.
Part SB034, £222.60 inc VAT a side. Handed, order twice for a pair. Takes any base-mount recliner in this guide paired with the matching runner kit.
Every reclining seat in this guide is a base-mount recliner, and they differ in the width of their bottom bolt pattern. The Corbeau seats are drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, which gives them the most flexibility. The Sparco seats use 345mm, which means the Sparco runner kit (184229). The Recaro Sportster CS uses a wider 405mm pattern and needs its own runner. Match the runner to the seat before ordering; the Planted bracket takes all three routes.
| Seat | Bolt pattern | Planted bracket |
|---|---|---|
| Corbeau PSR pair | 291 or 345 | Fits |
| Recaro Sportster CS | 405 x 290 | Fits |
| Sparco GT | 345 x 271 | Fits |
| Corbeau RRS pair | 291 or 345 | Fits |
| Sparco R333 | 345 x 271 | Fits |
The PSR is the one we sell most pairs of into cars used like this, on the road most of the time with a track day once a month or so. It holds you well enough for circuit use without making a two-hour motorway run feel like a workout. The pair price at £558 makes the decision to do both sides straightforward, not a stretch, and at 32 to 38 inch waist with no height restriction it covers the widest range of drivers of any seat in this guide.
The PSR is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, which means the Sparco runner kit is the only additional purchase needed.
Recaro made the original sports seat for the E30 and the Sportster CS is the current version of that argument. BMW owners ask about this seat specifically, and with reason: it is all-day comfortable, fits every size of driver, and Recaro build it in leather and suede that wears considerably better than aftermarket fabric over the years a well-kept E30 is going to spend being driven. The 405mm bottom bolt pattern is wider than the Sparco standard, so it goes on the Planted bracket with the Endurance Recaro runner kit, not the Sparco set, but the route is clean once it is sorted.
If you are building the E30 to keep rather than to modify and move on, this is where the money is worth spending.
The Sparco GT was built with classic and retro cars in mind and it reads right in an E30 cabin in a way a slick modern seat does not. The styling is period-appropriate without being a replica of anything, which matters in a car where the interior has a character worth working with, not fighting. Cameron would put this in an E30 heading to a historic event or a Goodwood day where the car’s era is part of the point.
Two things to know before ordering: the standard GT is published for 32 to 36 inch waists and drivers under six foot. If you are on the broader side of either, the Houndstooth edition runs slightly wider at 32 to 38 inches and drops the height restriction. If you need help identifying which fits before ordering, drop us an email or click to open a chat and we will help you confirm it.
The RRS is the PSR’s step up. The side bolsters are more pronounced, there is more shoulder containment in the backrest, and the pair price at £984 reflects that. This is the one for drivers who are using the E30 on track regularly, not just occasionally, where the seat holds you through a sequence of corners, not just one. The low base variant (244485) drops the seating position a fraction further, which is useful if you have fitted a roll cage and lost some headroom.
Same both-pattern drilling as the PSR, so it goes on the same Sparco runners.
The R333 is the budget entry into Sparco’s reclining range and it does the job cleanly. If the E30 is primarily a track car and the seat is getting fitted and left, not chosen for comfort, the R333 gives you Sparco engineering without competing with the rest of the car’s budget. Same 345mm route as the GT, different character: where the GT has period styling, the R333 is a plain functional seat that draws no attention to itself.
Same fit window as the GT, 32 to 36 inch waist and under six foot. If you are unsure between the two, the GT goes in a car being used as a classic and the R333 goes in one being used as a track tool.
The Planted bracket bolts to the E30’s factory floor mounting points; there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the bolts properly when fitting and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new compared to the original. Between bracket and seat go the sliding runners, and those follow the same pattern logic as the seats. One ordering detail to note: the Sparco runner kit (184229) is sold as a pair of rails for one seat, and the Endurance Recaro kit (224836) is per seat, so add two of whichever runner you need when ordering a pair of seats.

Not on a standard floor. The Planted Technology bracket bolts to the factory seat mounting points. Check floor condition before fitting on any E30 this age, because these rust and soft metal around the mounting points needs sorting before you load a seat onto it.
The Sparco sliding runner kit (184229, £78.00 inc VAT per kit) covers the Corbeau PSR, the Corbeau RRS, the Sparco GT and the Sparco R333, all of which use the 345mm route. The Endurance Recaro compatible runner kit (224836, £95.04 inc VAT) covers the Recaro Sportster CS only. Add two kits when ordering runners for a pair of seats.
Yes, if you can. Factory Recaro sports seats on an E30 are worth several hundred pounds in good condition and they are increasingly hard to find. Store them dry with every fixing, label the hardware, and they keep their value. Fitting aftermarket seats does not affect the car's floor permanently when the Planted bracket is used, so original Recaros can go back in later if you want them there.
Every seat in this guide has belt slots in the backrest and is listed as 4 point compatible by its manufacturer. If you are planning harnesses, tell us when you order and we will make sure the full setup works together. A cage or harness bar behind the seat is sensible before running a 4 point on road driving.
Yes. The M3 E30 reclining seat guide covers the M3 chassis specifically, which uses a different frame. If you are fitting to a standard E30 chassis, this guide is the one to follow. If you are not certain which chassis you have, the VIN and the production specification sheet will confirm it.
For most E30 owners who are on the road most of the time with the odd track day: the Corbeau PSR pair. They do the job on both sides of the car at a price that does not need justifying, and the wide 32 to 38 inch fit means almost anyone can order them without measuring twice.
For a car that sees regular circuit sessions: the Corbeau RRS pair. The extra shoulder containment is noticeable once you are using the car properly on track, and the additional £21 a seat over the PSR is not worth arguing about if track days are a regular thing.
For a car being kept long term and used properly: the Recaro Sportster CS. It is the seat that E30 owners keep for years, not swap out, and the leather and suede hold up far better than any aftermarket fabric over time.
For a car going to period events or historic circuits: the Sparco GT. It reads right in an E30 interior, fits the brief without compromise.
