Honda CRX Bucket Seat Guide

The Honda CRX (1984 to 1991)

Most CRX seat enquiries start the same way. The coilovers are on, the car has been out on a track day, and the driver spent the whole session bracing against the door card instead of steering.

There is no shortage of kit for a CRX. The problem is that there are two completely separate ways of mounting a seat in one, they take different seats, and choosing the seat before the kit is how people end up with a box they cannot use. Working out those combinations is my job here, so this page runs in the order I would actually do it. I am Cameron, by the way.

Honda CRX second generation, lightly modified on a race circuit
Second generation CRX. Check which one you have before ordering a bracket, the floor changed for 1988.

Start here, side mount or base mount

Every fitting kit on this page is one or the other, and they do not mix without adaption bars. Work out which one you want before you look at a single seat.

Side mount

The seat is held by its sides, on brackets that bolt through the holes in the shell. That is how every FIA fixed back bucket mounts. It sits you lowest and it is the stiffest way to hold a seat. On a CRX that means the PCI kits.

Base mount

The seat sits on top of a frame and bolts down through its underside. Every reclining sport seat mounts this way, and so do a good number of road going buckets. On a CRX that means the Planted brackets or a brand subframe.

Get the order rightDecide fixed back or reclining first, buy the kit that matches, then pick the seat from the half of the catalogue that fits it. Not the other way round. I have unpicked enough orders that went the other way round to know how it ends.

The side mount route, PCI Racing

PCI make two kits for the second generation CRX, both covering 1988 to 1991 cars. The adjustable seat mount is the one most people want: a one piece laser cut and CNC folded 3mm steel base that bolts to the factory seat mounting points. Getting into a proper side mount setup on a CRX starts at £210 with it.

The sliding sub frame is the same idea running on PCI’s S1 sliders instead of fixed adjustment. Worth the difference if the car gets shared or you want to move the seat without picking up a spanner. The full range is in our PCI Racing frames category.

Which bucket seats fit the PCI kit

The CRX has a narrow floor pan and the centre tunnel arrives sooner than you expect, so seat width matters more here than on most cars. PCI’s own fitment list for this kit names Cobra, Corbeau, Mirco and Sparco side mount seats.

Standard width seats onlyPCI list Cobra and Corbeau in standard width only, and that is not PCI hedging. An XL shell either fouls the tunnel or pushes you into the door card. If you are over about a 36 inch waist, ring us before ordering rather than assuming the XL version will go in. I would rather have that conversation than process the return.

Sparco

The Sprint is the sensible way in. Steel framed shell, FIA 8855-1999, and one of the narrower seats we keep, which is exactly what a CRX wants. The Rev QRT is the step up and moves to a fibreglass shell. You notice the weight difference the moment you pick the two up one after the other.

OMP

The TRS-E is the cheapest FIA seat I would happily put in a road car, and the velour wears better than people expect it to. The Champ-R is the one to have if the CRX is seeing track days, deeper leg bolsters and it actually holds you under braking.

Mirco

The GT 3D is our best selling seat, full stop, and it suits a CRX because the shell is one of the more compact ones we keep and the 3D fabric does not get slippery once it warms up. The RS2 3D sits you a little more upright, which some prefer if the car is still doing road miles.

Recaro

The Pole Position fits, and it is the seat everyone wants. It is also the most expensive thing on this page by a distance, in a car often worth less than the seat. I say that to everyone who asks and about half of them buy it anyway. The Profi SPG is the one if you are over 6ft.

Cobra

The Monaco Pro is the standard width Cobra and it is what PCI's fitment note is pointing at. Steel framed, HANS friendly, and it has been our best selling bucket for years. The XL version of it does not go in a CRX.

Corbeau

The Pro Series X System 1 is the standard width Corbeau and it fits. Fibreglass shell, deeper than the Cobra, and worth sitting in before you commit. As with the Cobra, the XL is the one to avoid here.

Our picks, not the whole listThese are the ten we fit most often, not the only ten that go in

Anything side mounted on the standard width list will bolt to the PCI kit, and the range runs a lot deeper than the seats shown here. We have picked a spread of brands and price points to show what the car takes. If you have your eye on something else, or you are between sizes, tell us the seat and we will check it against your CRX before you order.

The base mount route, Planted Technology

If you want a reclining seat, or a base mount bucket, this is your route. Planted make three brackets for the CRX, split by year, so check which car you have before ordering.

Put the seat you are fitting in the checkout comments and we will check the pattern matches before it ships.

Reclining seats for the CRX

A CRX is a small car with a low roof and most of them are still road cars, which is why recliners come up as often as buckets on this one.

The Sparco R100 is the default and has been for years. Base mount, and it suits all sizes, which the fixed back list further up this page does not. The R100 Martini is the same seat in Martini trim if the car has the stripes to go with it. The Cobra Le Mans Heritage looks right in an eighties Honda in a way a modern seat does not, and the Auto Style Type Retro does a similar job for less.

The Corbeau PSR is the one for a wider driver, rated to a 38 inch waist. The Recaro Sportster CS is the expensive answer and it is genuinely a nicer seat to sit in for a two hour drive than anything else here. There is more in our reclining sport seats category.

Brand specific subframes

Corbeau make a CRX subframe for their own seats, listed for the EE8 and ED9 cars. If you have already settled on a Corbeau seat it is the neatest way in, because it is built around that seat’s exact bolt pattern.

The catch is in the name. A brand subframe only takes that brand of seat, and it is base mount only, so it will not take a side mounted bucket without adding side mounts or adaption bars. If you have not settled on a seat yet, buy the Planted bracket instead and keep your options open. It takes six brands rather than one.

Cages and harnesses

Roll cages

Custom Cages and Safety Devices both make CRX cages, and JP Cages do a DIY half cage if you are welding it in yourself. If the car is going to be scrutineered, tell us which championship and which regulations before you order, because the bolt in and weld in answers are different.

Harnesses

A 4 point clip in is the usual answer for a fast road CRX. If the car has a cage and you are running a fixed back bucket, go to a 6 point and use the sub belt mounting points built into the PCI base.

Our recommendationsA starting point on belts, not a fixed list

These are the harnesses we sell most of. The right answer depends on whether the car has a cage, how many mounting points you have to work with, and whether you are running a HANS device. Tell us the setup and we will spec it properly.

Common questions about CRX seats

Yes, as long as it is securely mounted to the floor and the seat belt still works as it was designed to. The Planted brackets keep the original seat belt clip buckle, which makes that a shorter conversation at the test station.

Not on the PCI side mount kit. PCI list Cobra and Corbeau in standard width only, and the reason is the width of the floor pan and where the centre tunnel sits. Ring us before ordering if you are near a 36 inch waist.

Yes. Everything on this page is priced and supplied per side, so a pair of seats means a driver side kit and a passenger side kit.

Yes. The adjustable seat mount comes with the frame, a set of side mounts and the full bolt pack. You only need to add the seat.

Planted split theirs three ways: 1984 to 1987 for the first generation, 1988 to 1989 excluding the Si, and 1990 to 1991. Both PCI kits cover 1988 to 1991.

Not on its own. Those subframes are base mount and brand specific. You would need side mounts or adaption bars, and at that point the PCI kit or a Planted bracket is usually the tidier answer.
