Getting the Perfect Bucket Seat Ride Height in Your Ford Focus Mk2

Seat fitting guide, Ford Focus Mk2

The Ford Focus Mk2 has been a favourite with enthusiasts and track day drivers for years: a roomy cabin, a good chassis and plenty of aftermarket support make it a good car for bucket seats.

Fitting an aftermarket seat to a Mk2 is usually straightforward. Getting the height right is where it takes more thought. The seat is only part of it; the subframe you bolt it to decides how high or low you sit, and in our experience the difference between a Sparco subframe and a Planted Technology bracket in this car changes the driving position completely.

  • In a Focus Mk2, the subframe decides your seat height as much as the seat does
  • The Sparco Mk2 subframe sits higher and suits road use and shorter drivers
  • The Planted bracket is the lowest we offer for the Focus, better for helmets and taller drivers
  • Sparco frames present the 345mm by 271mm base pattern for Sparco, OMP and Corbeau base mount seats
  • Our Planted Focus bracket is listed for the 2008 to 2011 car; check your year with us
  • Sit in the seat wearing your helmet before you fix anything

Why ride height matters

Seat height is not just about comfort. It changes how you sit, how you see out, how the pedals and wheel fall to hand, and how much room you have above your head.

When it is right:

  • a comfortable posture for long drives
  • headroom to spare, even in a helmet
  • a better feel for what the car is doing
  • less fatigue, with your eye line and arms where they should be

When it is wrong: sitting too high costs headroom, particularly for taller drivers or on track in a helmet. Sitting too low can cut your view forward and make the car feel awkward to drive. The aim is the point in between.

Why you need an aftermarket subframe

The factory seat mountings are made for the factory seats, which use different bolt patterns and fixings from aftermarket seats. To fit a new seat securely you need a subframe that:

  • bolts to your car’s own floor mounting points
  • presents a standard pattern for the seat, such as 345mm, 291mm or 405mm
  • works with sliding runners and side mounts where you need them

The subframe is the foundation of the installation, so it decides not only whether the seat fits but how high it sits. Our guide to seat bolt patterns explains the widths.

The Sparco Focus Mk2 subframe: taller, for road use

Sparco's direct fit subframe for the Focus Mk2 bolts to the car's own floor mounting points and presents the 345mm by 271mm base pattern, which takes Sparco, OMP and Corbeau base mount seats. Side mount competition shells need side mounts or adaption bars fitted over the frame. It is sold per side or as a pair, and Sparco runners can go between the frame and the seat.

  • Sits higher in the car
  • Suits road use and shorter drivers
  • Gives a good view over the dash and bonnet
  • Works best where you are not wearing a helmet

In our experience it sits too high for most motorsport use, especially for taller drivers in helmets.

The Planted Focus bracket: low, for track use

The Planted Technology bracket is the lowest seat bracket we offer for the Focus. It puts the seat noticeably lower than the Sparco frame, which suits taller drivers and anyone who wants to wear a helmet in the car comfortably.

  • A low mount for track and helmet use
  • Holes for 345mm, 291mm and 405mm patterns
  • Works well for side mount setups, including wide and XL seats

The 405mm option is what makes it useful for wide seats such as the OMP TRS-E XL, the Sparco Sprint L and the OMP WRC-R XL once side mounts are fitted. It is also the bracket to use with Recaro seats, which we only fit on Planted brackets. Our Planted Focus listing is for the 2008 to 2011 facelift car, and the ST has its own version, so send us your registration and we will confirm the right one.

Sparco for road cars, Planted for track

Sparco recliners on Sparco frames. For a road car, we often suggest one of Sparco’s reclining sport seats, such as the R100 or R333, or the GT. They are made for comfort and everyday use, with reclining backs and room for the standard seatbelt, and on a Sparco frame they suit daily drivers and fast road cars.

Fixed back bucket seats on Planted frames. For track days, motorsport or serious sim use, a fixed back bucket seat on the low Planted frame is the better combination. Bucket seats do not recline, are often narrower, and put support and hold ahead of comfort, and they are usually used with a multi-point harness, especially with a roll cage. They sit lower, give better helmet clearance, and hold you firmly in hard corners.

Think ahead about helmets

If the Focus will do track days, time attack or racing, plan for your helmet from the start. A helmet adds noticeable height, so a position that feels fine on the road can be too high on track.

  • Sit in the seat wearing your helmet if you can
  • Check your eyes are at a comfortable height
  • Make sure the top of the helmet clears the roof lining
  • Check your view over the dash and the steering wheel adjustment

If the car will be scrutineered, ask your scrutineer about the seat installation before you finish it. Garreth’s advice is to send us your height, the seat and how you use the car, and we will tell you which frame gives the right position. If you are fitting Recaro Sportster CS seats, our Sportster CS in a Focus Mk2 answer covers the mounts.

The Planted Technology bracket is the lowest we offer for the Focus.

In our experience it sits too high for most track use, especially for tall drivers in helmets.

It presents a 345mm by 271mm base pattern for Sparco, OMP and Corbeau base mount seats; side mount shells need side mounts or adaption bars.

The Planted bracket’s 405mm option suits wide seats such as the OMP TRS-E XL once side mounts are fitted.

Our listing is for the 2008 to 2011 car, with a separate ST version; send us your registration to check.
