Ford Mustang fifth gen bucket seat guide
2005 to 2014 (S197), including GT, Boss 302 and GT500
The S197, the retro-shaped Mustang, keeps a solid rear axle right through the run from 2005 to 2014. On a rough circuit the back end moves in a way an independent-suspension car’s does not, and the standard seat lets you move with it. That is tiring and it costs accuracy, and it is usually the first thing people change in the interior.
Two quite different cars wear the S197 badge: the 2005 to 2010 cars run the 4.6 litre modular V8, and from 2011 Ford fitted the 5.0 Coyote, which changed the car’s character completely. Both take the same fitting bracket. The S550 from 2015 does not, so order on the year.
If your car has factory-fitted side airbags in the seats, which is common on later S197s and mandatory on some trims, tell us before anything comes out. That changes how the swap needs to be handled.
- Planted Technology (18061, part SB039) is currently the only branded fitting bracket for the S197, covering both the 4.6 V8 (2005-2010) and 5.0 Coyote (2011-2014) versions. It does not fit the S550 from 2015
- The live axle rear end is why the seat matters more on this car than on an independent-suspension car. The standard seat lets you move with the axle rather than resisting it
- If your car has factory side airbags in the seats, tell us before removing anything. This changes how the swap needs to be handled
- Boss 302 and GT500 models from 2012 could be specified with factory Recaro seats. If yours has them, tell us what you have before spending, since a factory Recaro will not bolt to standard side mounts
- No roll cage in the current catalogue is confirmed for this generation specifically. Every Mustang-branded cage available is either for the classic 1960s-70s car or the S550 from 2015 onwards
- Harnesses above 3-point need a roll cage or a properly engineered harness bar
Mounting
The Planted Technology bracket (18061) at £185.50 covers the S197 from 2005 to 2014, both the 4.6 V8 and 5.0 Coyote versions. It is handed, and it does not fit the S550 from 2015 onwards.
If your car is a Boss 302 or GT500 from 2012 onwards, check whether it has factory-fitted Recaro seats before spending anything. They are good seats, and there are owners who would be better off keeping them. A factory Recaro will not bolt to standard side mounts, since Recaro use their own arrangement.
For side mount, the Sparco FIA steel brackets (13876) and Cobra steel side mounts (13891) both carry their own approval. The Cobra Premium sliding runners (120664) or the Sparco sliding runner kit (14036) add fore-aft adjustment.
Check for factory side airbags before removing the seatLater S197 Mustangs often have side airbags built into the factory seat. Tell us before anything comes out; removing a seat with an integrated airbag needs handling differently from a standard seat swap.

Competition bucket seats
Most seats here carry FIA 8855-1999 approval. The Cobra Suzuka T Pro-Fit at £561 is a premium option built for a car this size. The Cobra Monaco Pro at £235 and Sparco Sprint at £210 are the more accessible steel-shelled and dual-mount options.
The OMP Champ-R at £318, OMP ARS-R at £428 and Mirco RTS-2 3D at £334 are fibreglass alternatives. The Sparco Rev QRT at £345, Evo L QRT at £510 and Evo QRT at £475 sit at the upper end, all suited to a Mustang built for regular track use.

Competition seats for the Mustang fifth genWhich bucket seat for a Ford Mustang fifth gen
For the live-axle rear end this car has, a shell with strong lateral support matters more than usual. The Cobra Suzuka T Pro-Fit at £561 is built to give that. The OMP Champ-R at £318 is a lighter fibreglass alternative if you want to keep weight down. For a Mustang built properly for circuit work, the Sparco Evo L QRT at £510 gives strong support through fast corners. Talk to us with the seat dimensions and confirm the bracket before ordering.
Reclining sport seats
Reclining sport seats fit the Planted bracket. The Sparco R100 Martini Racing at £291.66 is the accessible starting point. The Sparco R500 Fabric at £274.16 and R333 at £374.56 give a step up in support and finish.
The Cobra Daytona at £499.17 is the Cobra fibreglass recliner option. The Corbeau Sportline RRS pair at £830 and SVR Vinyl pair at £850 sit at the higher end. The Auto Style Type JW at £245.60 is the accessible alternative. At the top, the Sparco SPR at £1549.12 is a premium reclining seat for a full interior rebuild.

The Sparco R100 Martini Racing at £291.66 is a sensible road-car starting point. The Corbeau Sportline RRS pair at £830 gives noticeably more lateral support for a car built for regular track use, worth the extra given the live axle's tendency to move underneath you. For a full interior rebuild, the Sparco SPR at £1549.12 is the seat in this guide built to that standard.
Roll cages
No S197-specific cage currently availableEvery Mustang-branded roll cage in the current catalogue is either built for the classic 1960s-70s Mustang (labelled Historic, Fastback or Notchback) or for the S550 from 2015 onwards. None are confirmed for the S197 (2005-2014). Contact us if you need a cage for this car; a bespoke or fabricated solution may be the route, and we can point you in the right direction.
We would rather tell you this than list a cage that does not actually fit your car. If a genuinely S197-specific cage becomes available, this guide will be updated.
Harnesses
Harnesses need a roll cage or harness barA 4-point, 5-point or 6-point harness with separate shoulder straps needs proper attachment points above and behind the seat. Fit a roll cage or a properly engineered harness bar before using anything above a 3-point belt.
The TRS Clubman 3-point bolt-in at £80 and 4-point clip-in at £100 both use the standard seat belt anchor points and do not need a cage. For 4-point competition use, the TRS Magnum 4-point FIA at £205 and the Takata Drift II at £229 are the step up.
For 6-point harnesses, proper anchor points are needed first, whether from a cage or an engineered harness bar. The TRS Magnum 6-point Superlite FIA at £245, the Takata Drift III at £270, and the Schroth Profi 3×2 at £370 are all suitable once those points exist.

Common questions
Why does the seat matter so much on this car?
The S197 keeps a solid rear axle right through the run to 2014. On a rough circuit the back end moves in a way an independent-suspension car does not, and the standard seat lets you move with it, which is tiring and costs accuracy. A supportive seat is usually the first change people make in the interior.
Does the same bracket fit both the V8 and the Coyote Mustang?
Yes. The Planted bracket covers both the 2005-2010 cars with the 4.6 modular V8 and the 2011-2014 cars with the 5.0 Coyote. It does not fit the S550 from 2015 onwards, so order on the year.
My car has factory side airbags in the seats. What do I need to know?
Tell us before removing anything. A seat with an integrated airbag needs handling differently from a standard seat swap, and this affects how the job should be approached.
Is there a roll cage for this generation?
Not currently, as far as we have found. Every Mustang-branded cage in the catalogue is either for the classic 1960s-70s car or the S550 from 2015 onwards. Contact us if you need a cage for the S197 and we will point you toward a bespoke solution.
Should I keep the factory Recaro seats on a Boss 302 or GT500?
Possibly. From 2012 those models could be specified with factory Recaro seats, which are good. Tell us what you have before spending anything, since there are cases where keeping them is the better call. Note that a factory Recaro uses its own mounting arrangement and will not bolt to standard side mounts.
More help
Tell us about any factory side airbags in the seats, and whether your car is a Boss 302 or GT500 with factory Recaro seats, before ordering anything. Cameron works through the seat, frame and car combination together.
