BMW Z3 bucket seat guide
1996 to 2002
Before anything else on this car, we need to know whether yours is the roadster or the coupe. It sounds like a formality. It is not.
Custom Cages build the Z3 cage twice, once for each body, and the two are not interchangeable because the roof line and the rear structure they pick up on are different. Planted catalogue their seat bracket under the coupe name as well. So on a Z3, the body style decides two of the three things you are likely to buy, which is not true of most cars we write these guides for.
The other thing to say up front is that a Z3 is narrow inside. The transmission tunnel is high and the sills are close, and a wide shell that would drop straight into a saloon can end up sitting on the tunnel or leaving you unable to get your hand to the handbrake. Measure before you commit.
- Custom Cages list the Z3 twice, Coupe and Roadster, in CDS and in T45
- The one direct fit bracket we catalogue is listed as the Z3 Coupe and M Coupe
- Base mount only, so a direct fit bracket sets the seat position once
- The cabin is narrow, so check shell width against the tunnel and the handbrake
- The Cobra Monaco Pro and the OMP TRS-E both mount either base or side
- The Auto Style K12 is listed at a 28in to 32in waist for a genuinely tight fit
Roadster or coupe, and why we ask
The Z3 was sold as a soft top roadster and, from 1998, as the coupe that everybody either loves or calls a shooting brake with a straight face. Underneath the doors they are the same car. Above them they are not, and that is where the cage bolts.
So Custom Cages make four kits: a multipoint CDS and an international multipoint T45 for the coupe, and the same pair for the roadster. Ordering the wrong one is an expensive mistake to unpick, and it is the single most common thing we head off on this car.
Our seat bracket listing carries the same split. Planted catalogue it as the Z3 Coupe and M Coupe for 1996 to 2002. If you have a roadster, tell us and we will confirm the fitment with Planted before we take an order rather than after it. We would rather have that conversation now.
Tell us the body style firstThe cage and the seat bracket are both catalogued by body on this car. Send us the registration or just say roadster or coupe when you get in touch, and we will make sure what goes on the order is the right one.
The frames
Planted make the direct fit bracket. It bolts to the floor where the standard runners were and takes the seat straight onto it, which sits it lower than standard. There is no sliding sub frame catalogued for the Z3, so the fore and aft adjustment goes with the standard seat.
In a two seat car that is usually fine, because it is normally one driver. Just set the position properly, in the car, with your helmet on, before you commit.
A fixed back shell also needs side mount brackets to pick up on the base. They are a separate part from both the seat and the frame.

Fixed back competition seats
Three shells here, all needing side mounts. The Sparco Rev QRT is the one we sell most of for a car this size because it is listed for all driver heights and is not an especially wide seat. The OMP ARS-R is the wide option at a 36in to 38in waist, and worth checking against your tunnel clearance before you order. The Evo QRT is the serious end.
Reclining and dual fitment seats
Most Z3s are weekend cars rather than race cars, and these are the seats that suit that.
Three of them mount either way. The Cobra Monaco Pro and the Monaco 40th Edition both carry FIA 8855-1999, and the OMP TRS-E is listed at a 28in to 36in waist, which is a genuinely useful spread in a narrow car. The Auto Style K12 is the narrowest thing on this page at 28in to 32in, and it exists for exactly this sort of cabin.
Of the recliners, the Sparco GT and the R100 Martini both suit the period of the car without looking like fancy dress.

Our picksMonaco Pro if it goes on track, Sparco GT if it does not
The Cobra Monaco Pro is FIA approved, mounts either way and is not a wide seat, which is the combination a Z3 wants. If the car is a fast road weekend thing, the Sparco GT gives you the support and keeps the recline. Send us your height and waist and Cameron will tell you which will actually fit around that tunnel.
Harnesses
The standard belt is right on the road. On circuit a harness is what makes the seat worth having, because the seat can only hold you if something holds you into it.
In a Z3 the shoulder straps need a solid anchor behind you at or above shoulder height, which in practice means one of the cages below or a harness bar. In a roadster with the roof down, this matters more than usual: get the anchor right and get the strap angles right, because there is nothing above you.

Our recommendationsDated belts only where the rules ask for them
The TRS Clubman belts cover fast road and trackday use and never need renewing, which on a weekend car is the sensible buy. The Magnum 6 point Superlite and the Schroth Profi carry FIA dates, which is what a series that asks for them wants. Tell us the class and we will confirm which applies.
Roll cages
Four kits, and the split is by body first and material second. Coupe and roadster each get a multipoint kit in CDS steel, which is the club and trackday answer, and an international multipoint kit in T45, which is the lighter competition specification.
Check what your championship asks for before choosing, because the regulations name the specification rather than leaving it to you. If the car is a trackday roadster and you just want the harness anchor and the protection, the CDS kit is the sensible buy.
What fits what
Waist, height and approval are taken from each product listing. Where a listing does not state a figure the table says so.

Questions about fitting seats in a BMW Z3
Do the coupe and the roadster take the same parts?
Not all of them. The cage is catalogued separately for each body and the two are not interchangeable. Our seat bracket listing names the coupe and M coupe as well. Tell us which one you have and we will confirm the fitment before we take the order.
Is a Z3 too narrow for a bucket seat?
No, but it is narrower than most cars, and the transmission tunnel is high. The seats that suit it are the ones listed at a 28in to 32in or 28in to 36in waist, like the Auto Style K12 or the OMP TRS-E. Send us your measurements and we will be straight with you about what will and will not clear.
Can I keep the seat adjustment?
Not with a direct fit bracket. There is no sliding sub frame catalogued for the Z3, so the position is set once. In a two seat car with one regular driver that is rarely a problem, but set it properly with your helmet on before you tighten anything.
What is the cheapest FIA approved seat that fits?
The OMP TRS-E Velour, which carries FIA 8855-1999, mounts either base or side, and is listed from a 28in waist. On a Z3 that combination is hard to beat.
Do I need a cage to run a harness?
You need something solid behind you at or above shoulder height, and a cage is the usual way of getting it. A harness bar will do the same job on a trackday car. What you must not do is run the straps down to a floor point behind the seat, because that loads your spine rather than holding you back.
