BMW 3 Series E92 bucket seat guide

2006 to 2013

The E92 shares a name and an era with the E90 saloon, and almost none of the parts underneath the seats. Five different makers all draw a frame specifically for the coupe rather than letting the saloon part do both jobs, which tells you most of what you need to know.

So the one thing to get right before you order anything is which car you actually have. A coupe is an E92. A saloon is an E90, a touring is an E91 and a convertible is an E93, and those three are covered on the E90 guide.

Once that is settled the E92 is a good car to buy seats for. Both mounting routes exist, there is a proper spread of shells, and the cages are split so you can pick one that suits the body.

Coupe parts, not saloon parts

Planted catalogue a bracket specifically for the E92 coupe chassis. Cobra, Recaro and SW Motorsports each list an E92 direct fit subframe. Cybul list a mount for the E9X family. Five makers, and none of them expects the saloon part to do the job.

The PCI sliding sub frame is the other route. It puts the seat on a runner so it still moves fore and aft afterwards, which suits an E92 that is still used on the road.

One brand rule worth repeating. A Recaro sub-frame is drawn for Recaro seats and takes nothing else. The base mount pattern shared by Sparco, OMP and Corbeau is the flexible one, so those three seats cross over onto the same frames.

Coupe, saloon, touring or convertibleOnly the coupe is an E92. If you have the saloon, touring or convertible, the parts and the guide you want are the E90 ones. If you are not certain which you have, send us the registration and we will confirm before anything is picked.

Fixed back competition seats

Seven shells, all needing side mount brackets to pick up on the frame.

Size separates them usefully here. The Mirco RTS-2 3D and the Sparco Circuit II QRT are both listed to a 40in waist, and the Mirco covers drivers over six foot as well. The Cobra Suzuka T Pro-Fit is at the other end at 28in to 32in, which is the one for a smaller driver. The Recaro Pole Position pair are drawn for under six foot.

Reclining and base mounted seats

An E92 is a comfortable car and plenty of them stay that way. A reclining shell on a direct fit frame fixes the support without changing what the car is for.

The Recaro Sportster CS carries no waist restriction in its listing, and the Cobra Misano Anniversary Spec 2 is listed for all waists and all heights as well. The Cobra Monaco Pro is the dual fitment option that suits either route.

💬
Our picksConfirm the body, then choose on use

The E92 specific frame is the part that matters, so settle that first. After that a sliding sub frame with a reclining shell suits a road car, and a direct fit frame with a fixed back shell suits one that lives on circuit. Cameron works out the fit and the combination for a given car, so send your height, your waist and confirm it is the coupe.

Harnesses

On the road the standard belt is right and works with everything on this page. On circuit the harness stops you bracing against the wheel through every corner.

The shoulder straps need a solid anchor behind you at or above shoulder height, which in a coupe means a harness bar or a cage. Send us a photograph of what is behind the seats and we will confirm it before you order.

💬
Our recommendationsMatch the belt to the class

The TRS Clubman belts cover fast road and trackday use and have nothing to renew. The Magnum 6 point Superlite and the Schroth Profi are FIA dated, which is what a series that asks for them wants and an unnecessary cost otherwise. Send us the championship and we will confirm.

Roll cages

Four options, and one detail worth reading before you buy. Sparco split their E92 M3 cages into a coupe kit and a saloon kit, so check which you are ordering even though both carry the E92 name.

The OMP bolt-in is the trackday answer for a car that is still road registered. The Custom Cages multipoint in T45 is the competition option. Check what your championship asks for, because the regulations name the type.

What fits what

Waist, height and approval are from each product listing. Where a listing does not state a figure the table says so.

Questions about fitting seats in a BMW E92

No, and that is the main thing to take from this page. Five makers all draw a separate E92 coupe frame rather than reusing the saloon part. Order the coupe part, and if you are unsure which car you have, send us the registration.

The saloon is the E90, the touring is the E91 and the convertible is the E93, and all three are on that guide. Only the two door coupe is an E92.

Yes, with the PCI sliding sub frame, which keeps the fore and aft travel after the seat is fitted. The direct fit frames are the base mount route and set the position once, which sits the seat lower.

The Mirco RTS-2 3D and the Sparco Circuit II QRT are both listed to a 40in waist, and the Mirco covers drivers over six foot too. Among the reclining seats the Recaro Sportster CS and the Cobra Misano Anniversary Spec 2 both list no waist restriction.

Check which one you are buying. Sparco list an E92 M3 coupe kit and an E92 M3 saloon kit separately, so the name alone does not settle it. Tell us the body when you order and we will make sure the right kit ships.
