BMW 3 Series E21 bucket seat guide
1975 to 1983
The E21 started everything, and enough of them have survived in good order that we now sell for them as classics rather than as cheap old BMWs. That changes what people want. A seat has to hold you properly and it has to suit an interior that is fifty years old.
There is also one detail on this car that decides more than anything else on the page, and it is worth knowing before you plan a build. Safety Devices make three different cages for the E21, and the thing that separates them is not the engine or the trim. It is whether the car has a sunroof.
So if a cage is anywhere in your plans, look at the roof first. The seats come after that, and the choice of period styled options is genuinely good.
- Safety Devices catalogue three E21 cages, split by whether the car has a sunroof
- The no sunroof cars get the choice of a full cage or a rear cage; the sunroof car has its own full cage
- Two frames fit: a Planted bracket for the 1975 to 1983 chassis and a Corbeau direct fit sub-frame
- Both are base mount and no sliding sub frame is catalogued for the E21
- The Corbeau GT4 Retro and the OMP Classic 1970s Revival are both listed for all waists and all heights
- The Cobra Monaco 40th Edition mounts either way and is FIA 8855-1999
What is on this page
The frames
Planted list a bracket for the E21 chassis across 1975 to 1983, and Corbeau list a direct fit sub-frame. Both are base mount, so a classic or reclining seat bolts straight down onto them.
There is no sliding sub frame for this car, so the seat position is set when it goes in. A runner underneath a base mounted seat is how you get some adjustment back, and on a car with this little cabin space that small lift is worth thinking about rather than assuming.
If you are going down the competition shell route, the Recaro FIA side mount brackets below are what a Profi family shell hangs on. Everything else on the page is base mounted and needs no side mounts at all.

Check the floor and the sills firstAn E21 is old enough that the metal around the seat mounting points deserves a proper inspection before anything is bolted through it. If there is corrosion at the mounts or in the sills, deal with that first. This is the one job on the page you cannot buy your way out of.
Period styled and reclining seats
This is where most E21 owners should be looking. These seats hold you properly without looking like they came out of a modern hatchback, which matters in a cabin this original.
The Corbeau GT4 Retro and the OMP Classic 1970s Revival are the two drawn specifically for cars of this era, and both are listed for all waists and all driver heights, so they fit almost anybody. The Cobra Monaco 40th Edition is the interesting one: period styling, FIA 8855-1999 approval, and listed for base or side mounting, so it works on either route.

Our picksPeriod look first, then the fit
On a tidy road E21 the Corbeau GT4 Retro or the OMP Classic 1970s Revival look right and suit nearly every driver. If the car is going to be used harder, the Cobra Monaco 40th Edition gives you the period look with an FIA approval behind it. Cameron works out the fit and the combination for a given car, so send your height, your waist and a photograph of the interior.
Competition shells
For an E21 built as a competition car, these are the fixed back options, and they need side mount brackets to pick up on the frame.
The Recaro Classic Pole Position ABE is the one that suits the car aesthetically, being the period styled version of that shell, though it is listed as road and track rather than carrying an FIA number. The Sparco QRT Performance and Evo QRT are the modern shells if the look matters less than the seat.

Harnesses
A harness is what makes a bucket seat work on circuit. On the road the standard belt is fine with any of these seats.
The shoulder straps need a solid anchor behind you at or above shoulder height, which on an E21 realistically means one of the cages below. There is nothing in the standard structure of a car this age that is designed to take that load. Tell us what is behind the seats and we will confirm it before you order belts.

Our recommendationsThe cage and the belts are one decision on this car
Because the shoulder anchor almost certainly has to come from a cage, plan the two together on an E21 rather than buying belts and working it out afterwards. The TRS Clubman belts cover road and trackday use, and the dated FIA belts are for cars entering something that asks for them. Send us the plan and we will price it as one job.
Roll cages, and the sunroof question
Safety Devices make three cages for the E21 and the deciding factor is the roof. There is a full cage for a car with a sunroof, and for a car without one there is both a full cage and a rear cage. OMP also list a classic car cage for the E21.
The reason is simple enough. A full cage runs a diagonal and roof members through the space a sunroof aperture occupies, so the sunroof car needs a different geometry. If you are not sure which yours is, that is a thirty second check and it saves ordering the wrong thing.
A rear cage is the lighter option and still gives you the harness anchor, which is often all a fast road or trackday car actually needs.

Questions about fitting seats in a BMW E21
Why does the sunroof change which cage I can have?
A full cage runs members through the roof area that a sunroof aperture occupies, so the geometry has to be different. Safety Devices catalogue a full cage for a sunroof car, and a full cage and a rear cage for cars without one. Check your roof before ordering.
Do I need a full cage, or will a rear cage do?
For most fast road and trackday E21s a rear cage is enough. It gives you the shoulder anchor a harness needs without the full structure through the cabin. A full cage is for a car built for competition, and the regulations of whatever you are entering will tell you which is required.
Which seats suit an original interior?
The Corbeau GT4 Retro and the OMP Classic 1970s Revival are drawn for cars of this era and both fit almost any driver. The Cobra Classic 40th Edition and the Recaro Classic Pole Position ABE are the other period looking options. All of them sit far better in an E21 than a modern competition shell would.
Can I keep the seat adjustment?
Not from the frame, as no sliding sub frame is catalogued for the E21. A runner under a base mounted seat gives it back at the cost of a little height, which is worth considering carefully in a cabin this size.
What should I check before ordering anything?
The floor and the sills around the seat mounting points. These cars are fifty years old and corrosion there is common. A frame is only as sound as what it bolts to, so have a look first and send us a photograph if you are unsure.
