BMW 6 Series E63 bucket seat guide

2003 to 2010

The E63 is a big, heavy, fast coupe that people still use for what it was built for, which is covering distance quickly. Anyone fitting seats to one is usually trying to add support without turning a comfortable car into an uncomfortable one.

This is the car in the range best set up for that. PCI catalogue both a sliding sub frame and an adjustable seat mount for the E63, which means you can put a proper seat in and still have it move. None of the other 5 or 6 Series we cover has that option, and on a grand tourer it is worth more than it would be on a track car.

The base mount route is there too if you want the seat as low and solid as it will go. Both are on this page, and the honest answer for most E63s is the first one.

The E63 on a trackday

Two routes, and why the runner usually wins

The PCI sliding sub frame is the one to look at first on an E63. It puts the seat on a runner so it still moves fore and aft after the job is done. On a car that gets driven to places rather than trailered to them, that is the difference between a seat you enjoy and one you tolerate. PCI also list an adjustable seat mount for the same car if you want to set the height and angle rather than the travel.

The base mount route is the Planted bracket. It sits the seat lower and more solidly and fixes the position at fitting. That suits an E63 that has become a track car, which some of them have.

Whichever you pick, a fixed back competition shell needs a pair of side mount brackets to join it to the frame. A base mounted or dual fitment seat does not.

The Planted part is listed under the M6Planted catalogue their E63 bracket under the M6 coupe on that chassis, 2005 to 2010. It is the E63 floor either way, but if you are searching by model name and drawing a blank, that is why. Send us the registration and we will confirm the right part against your car.

Seats for a grand tourer

Most E63s are still doing the job they were bought for, and a reclining shell on a sliding sub frame is the combination that suits that without argument.

The Recaro Sportster CS lists no waist restriction at all. The Sparco R100 is the one here whose listing covers drivers both under and over six foot. The Cobra Monaco Pro is the dual fitment option, listed for base or side mounting, which keeps your options open if the car changes job later.

Our picksTake the sliding sub frame unless the car is a track car

On an E63 that still covers distance, the PCI sliding sub frame with a reclining shell is the answer and it keeps everything that is good about the car. Save the base mount route for one that lives on circuit. Cameron works out the fit and the combination for a given car, so send your height, your waist and how the car is actually used.

Fixed back competition seats

For an E63 doing serious track time these are the shells, each needing side mount brackets to pick up on the frame.

Size matters more than usual here, because these are big cars often bought by big people. The Sabelt Titan X-Large is drawn for a 36in to 40in waist and drivers over six foot, which is the widest window on the page. The OMP ARS-R covers 36in to 38in and all heights. Most of the rest are listed for under six foot.

Harnesses

On the road the standard belt is right and works with every seat here. A harness is what you add when the car is on circuit and you are otherwise holding yourself in place with the steering wheel.

Plan the shoulder anchor first. The straps need something solid behind you at or above shoulder height, which in a coupe this size means a harness bar or a cage. Send us a photograph of what is behind the seats and we will confirm it.

Our recommendationsDated belts only where the rules require them

The TRS Clubman belts cover fast road and trackday use with nothing to renew. The Magnum 6 point Superlite and the Schroth Profi carry FIA dates and are worth the money only inside a series that asks for them. Tell us the championship and we will confirm which.

What fits what

Waist, height and approval are from each product listing. Where a listing does not state a figure the table says so.

Questions about fitting seats in a BMW E63

Yes, and it is the main reason to look at this car differently from the rest of the range. PCI catalogue a sliding sub frame for the E63 which keeps the fore and aft travel after fitting. They also list an adjustable seat mount if you would rather set the position precisely than have it slide.

Planted catalogue it as the M6 coupe on the E63 chassis, 2005 to 2010. It is the same floor. If you searched for a plain 6 Series part and found nothing, that is the reason. Send us the registration and we will confirm it for your car.

Only if you are running a harness and doing real track time. These are heavy comfortable cars and the reclining seats on a sliding sub frame suit them far better. The competition shells are here for the cars that have gone that way.

The Sabelt Titan X-Large at 36in to 40in and over six foot is the roomiest shell here by a clear margin. The OMP ARS-R covers 36in to 38in and all heights. On the reclining side the Recaro Sportster CS lists no waist restriction, and the Sparco R100 covers drivers under and over six foot.

Both PCI parts are listed for the E63 and the E46 together, so yes. If you are buying for an E46 rather than an E63, tell us and we will make sure the right variant is picked.
