BMW 5 Series E39 bucket seat guide
1995 to 2003
Most cars we write these guides for are being built. The E39 is usually being kept. People buy them because the chassis still feels good twenty five years on, and they tend to want more support without turning a comfortable car into a cage on wheels.
That shapes the whole page. There is a full competition seat list further down and it is worth having, but the reclining half is not the consolation prize here. On a car that does three hundred miles at a time and a trackday twice a year, a reclining shell on a proper frame is often the better buy.
The good news is the range. The E39 has the broadest seat selection of any 5 Series we cover, so you can be fussy about the fit rather than taking what is left.

What is on this page
The frame and what goes on it
Planted list a bracket for the E39 chassis covering 1995 to 2003. That is the base of the job. The seat then either bolts straight down onto it, if it is a base mounted or dual fitment seat, or hangs on a pair of side mount brackets if it is a fixed back shell.
There is no sliding sub frame catalogued for the E39, so the fore and aft position is set at fitting rather than adjustable afterwards. On a car that usually has one regular driver that is rarely a problem, but it is worth knowing before you commit if the car is shared.
One brand rule to keep in mind. Recaro sub-frames are drawn for Recaro seats and nothing else. The Recaro side mount brackets below are what a Pole Position hangs on. Everywhere else the base mount pattern is shared between Sparco, OMP and Corbeau, so those seats and frames cross over freely.

Runners are worth a thought on a road carA base mounted seat can take a runner underneath it, which gives back some of the adjustment the direct fit frame gives up. It raises the seat slightly, so it is a trade rather than a free win. If the car has two regular drivers, say so when you order and we will work out whether the height cost is worth it.
Reclining seats for a car you still drive
Starting here rather than with the competition shells, because on an E39 this is where most people should be looking. A reclining seat holds you far better than the standard one and you can still get comfortable on a long drive.
The Recaro Sportster CS is the one with no waist restriction listed at all, and the Recaro Speed covers up to 38in. Both are Recaro road shells rather than competition seats. The Cobra Monaco Pro is the dual fitment option, listed for base or side mounting, which is the seat to buy if you might move to a fixed back setup later without changing the seat.

Our picksDo not over-build a car this good on the road
For the great majority of E39s, the Planted frame with a reclining shell is the right answer and it leaves the car pleasant to drive. Go fixed back if you are doing proper track time and running a harness, not because it looks the part. Cameron works out the fit and the combination for a given car, so tell him your height, your waist and roughly how the car gets used.
Fixed back competition seats
If the car is doing real track miles, these are the shells. All nine are FIA 8855-1999 apart from the Recaro Pole Position ABE, which is the road and track version of the same seat.
The OMP ARS-R stands out on fit, listed for a 36in to 38in waist and all driver heights, which is unusually generous for a competition shell. The Sabelt GT3 is also listed for all heights. Most of the others are drawn for drivers under six foot, so check that before falling for one on looks.

Harnesses
On the road the standard belt works with every seat on this page. On circuit, a harness is what keeps you still enough to stop bracing on the wheel.
Plan the shoulder anchor first. The straps want a fixing behind you at or above shoulder height, which in an E39 means a harness bar or the cage below. If the cage is in the plan, order the belts alongside it.

Our recommendationsDated belts only when the rules ask
The TRS Clubman belts do fast road and trackday duty without an expiry date to watch. The Magnum 6 point Superlite and the Schroth Profi are FIA dated and worth it only inside a series that asks for them. Send us the championship and we will confirm which the regulations require.
Roll cage
OMP make a weld-in cage specifically for the E39. Weld-in is the stiffer option and the one competition regulations usually name, and it is a permanent change to the car, so it suits a dedicated build rather than a car that is still doing the school run.
It also gives you the shoulder anchor the harnesses need, which is why the two are usually bought together.

Questions about fitting seats in a BMW E39
Should I fit a fixed back seat to a road E39?
Usually not. A fixed back shell is the right answer when you are running a harness and doing real track time. For a fast road E39 a reclining seat on the Planted frame gives you most of the support and keeps the car civilised. It is the most common thing we sell for this car.
Do I lose the seat adjustment?
On the direct fit frame, yes, because no sliding sub frame is catalogued for the E39. A runner underneath a base mounted seat gives some of it back, at the cost of a little height. If the car has two regular drivers that trade is usually worth making.
Can I use a Recaro seat with the Planted frame?
A Recaro shell hangs on Recaro side mount brackets, which pick up on the frame. What you cannot do is put a non-Recaro seat on a Recaro sub-frame, because those are drawn for Recaro seats only. The base mount pattern shared by Sparco, OMP and Corbeau is the flexible one.
Which seat suits a bigger driver?
The OMP ARS-R is the roomiest competition shell here at 36in to 38in and all heights. On the reclining side the Recaro Sportster CS carries no waist restriction in its listing, and the Recaro Speed, Cobra Daytona and Corbeau Sportline RRS Elite all go to 38in.
Is the cage necessary for a harness?
Not necessarily, but something is. The shoulder straps need a solid anchor behind the seat at or above shoulder height. A harness bar does that job, and so does the cage. Send us a photograph of what is behind the front seats and we will tell you whether it will carry belts.
