BMW 3 Series E36 bucket seat guide

1990 to 2000

Ask for parts for an E36 and the first question back is which one. BMW built this car as a coupe, a saloon, a touring, a convertible and the compact, and for seat fitting purposes those are not the same car.

It shows up immediately in the catalogue. Planted draw one bracket for the coupe and a different one for the saloon. Every roll cage on this page is either a coupe part or a compact part, never both. The seats are common across the range, and almost nothing underneath them is.

So this page is arranged the way the parts are. Sort the shell first, then the route, then the seat. Get those in the wrong order and you will buy a frame that fits the car parked next to yours.

Start with the body shell

The E36 floor is not identical across the range, and the frame makers treat it accordingly. Planted list a bracket for the E36 coupe and a separate one for the E36 sedan. Ordering the wrong one is the single most common mistake on this car.

Once the shell is settled, the route is the same decision as on any other 3 Series. The PCI sliding sub frame puts a side mounted shell on a runner, so the seat still moves after it is fitted, which is what you want on a car that is driven to circuits rather than trailered. The direct fit subframes from Cobra, Sparco and Planted are the base mount route: lower, more solid, and set once.

One useful thing about the base mount route on this car. Base mount Sparco, OMP and Corbeau seats share one bolt pattern, so a Sparco frame will take an OMP or a Corbeau seat just as happily. That gives you more seat choice than the frame listing suggests.

Side mounts

A fixed back shell bolts to the frame through a pair of side mounts, ordered separately. The Cobra pair below is listed for the E46 and E36 together, and the QMS and Sparco brackets are the general FIA steel pattern.

Fixed back competition seats

These are the shells for a car that spends real time on circuit. Every one carries FIA 8855-1999 except the Cobra Nogaro Club Sport, which Cobra list as road and track.

Two are worth singling out for size. The Sabelt Titan X-Large is drawn for a 36in to 40in waist and drivers over six foot, which is the widest window on this page by a distance. The Cobra Suzuka T GT and the Sparco QRT-R are both listed for all driver heights, where the Corbeau Pro Series X and the OMP RT are drawn for drivers under six foot.

Reclining and base mounted seats

Plenty of E36s are still road cars that see a few trackdays a year, and a reclining shell is the honest answer for one of those. You give up some outright support and you get a seat you can adjust and sit in for three hours.

The Cobra Monaco Pro sits across both halves of this page, because it is listed for base or side mounting. That makes it the seat to buy if you have not settled the route yet. At the other end, the Cobra Misano Anniversary is the expensive one and it is a road seat, not a competition shell.

For a car that is properly built, the PCI sliding sub frame and a fixed back shell is the better answer. Harnesses

The standard belt still works with any of these seats on the road. On circuit a harness is what stops you bracing against the wheel through every corner, and it is what most organisers want to see alongside a fixed back seat.

Sort the shoulder mounting before you order. The straps need an anchor behind you at or above shoulder height, which on an E36 means a harness bar or the cage. If the cage is going in anyway, buy them together and we will make sure the belts suit the bar.

Roll cages

Four cages, and they split by body shell before anything else. There is a bolt-in and a weld-in for the coupe, and a bolt-in and a weld-in for the compact.

Bolt-in is the one to choose if the car is still road registered and you want the option of taking it out again. Weld-in is stiffer and is what a serious competition build uses. Check what your championship asks for before ordering either, because the regulations name the type.
