Audi TT Mk2 bucket seat guide

8J chassis, October 2006 to 2014, Coupe and Roadster

Three companies make a direct fit subframe for the 8J TT. SW Motorsport at £110, Planted Technology at £185.50 and Cobra at £212.50. That is unusual. On most cars in this guide the frame choice is straightforward and the seat choice follows. On the TT Mk2 the most expensive frame is the most restrictive: Cobra state on their listing that these subframes only fit Cobra seats. The other two are open, and on them the seat list is the whole page.

So the order of operations here runs backwards from what you might expect. If you have already decided on a Cobra seat, start with the Cobra subframe and work from the Cobra range. If you have not decided yet, or you want an OMP, Sparco, Sabelt or Mirco shell, start with the SW Motorsport frame or the Planted bracket and add a set of side mounts.

Three frames, three different rules

On most cars in this guide the frame is bought after the seat. On the TT Mk2 the Cobra subframe forces the other way round, because Cobra state plainly on the listing that their subframes for this car fit Cobra seats only. That is a closed system. Pick the seat first, and if it is not Cobra, do not start with the Cobra frame.

The SW Motorsport direct fit subframe (part SWS-Audi-TT-Mk2) is £110 per seat. It bolts to the 8J floor in place of the standard runners and the seat mounts either directly for a base mount build or on a set of side mounts for a competition shell. No brand restriction is published, and no bolt pattern is listed, so this is the open route for the widest choice of seats at the lowest cost.

The Planted Technology bracket (part SB199) is £185.50 per seat. Same architecture as the SW Motorsport frame: it replaces the OEM runners and the seat mounts directly or on side mounts. Planted manufacture to tighter tolerances than budget sub-frames and the bracket is listed for the TT Mk2 specifically, from 2007 to 2014. Available as RHD driver side or RHD passenger side.

The Cobra subframe (part SU-AU-TT2) is £212.50 per seat. Base mount, bolt pattern 291mm x 330mm, and Cobra’s own description says these subframes only fit seats of the same brand. Listed from September 2006. If you are running a Cobra seat this is the correct frame. If you are not, buy the SW Motorsport or Planted option instead.

All three are steel and all three are priced per seat, so both front seats means ordering two of whichever you choose.

The Cobra subframe is a closed systemCobra state on the listing that their TT Mk2 subframes fit Cobra seats only. The bolt pattern is 291mm x 330mm. On the TT Mk1 guide the equivalent Cobra frame was found to work with Corbeau seats on the same pattern, and that situation has been flagged to Garreth for confirmation on the Mk2. For now: if in doubt, ask before pairing a non-Cobra seat with the Cobra frame.

Base mount or side mount

All three subframes support both mounting styles. Base mount means the seat bolts directly to the subframe through holes in the seat base. Side mount means a pair of side mount bars goes between the subframe and the seat.

Four of the bucket seats further down take base and side mount equally: the Sparco Sprint, the OMP TRS-X, the Cobra Monaco Pro and the Sparco Pro 2000 QRT. Those four work with any of the three frames in a base mount build. Every other bucket here is side mount only and needs a set of mounts on top of the frame.

Subframe and a base mount seat

The lower, simpler build. The seat bolts straight to the subframe through its own base mounting holes. No side mounts involved. The total stack height is just the subframe, which on a TT with a low coupe roof is the better answer for anyone running a helmet. The four seats here that take base mount are the Sparco Sprint, OMP TRS-X, Cobra Monaco Pro and Sparco Pro 2000 QRT.

Subframe and side mounts

The competition route, and the one that sidesteps the bolt pattern question because the mounts handle the translation. A fixed back shell bolts to a pair of side mounts and the mounts bolt to the subframe. The Sparco FIA steel brackets are £75 a set, covering both sides of one seat, and Sparco list them as fitting their own side mount seats as well as OMP, Cobra and Sabelt side mount shells.

Height adds upThe subframe alone is the lowest build. Side mounts add roughly 30 to 40mm. A runner for fore-aft adjustment adds another 25 to 30mm on top of that. In a TT Mk2 coupe with a helmet on, that arithmetic matters. Decide which of those you actually need before you order, and if you are over six foot, keep the stack as low as the regulations and seat choice allow.

The fitting kit for an 8J

Pick the subframe first. If you are running a side mount competition shell, add the Sparco FIA mounts. If you want to keep the fore-aft adjustment, add a runner, unless you are on the Cobra subframe, which comes with one included. Two of the reclining seats further down (the Auto Style BS5 and the Sparco R500) come with runners included in the listing price, so check that before adding a separate runner to the basket.

Tell us the seat when you order the frameThe SW Motorsport and Planted frames publish no bolt pattern. On the Cobra frame the pattern is 291mm x 330mm and the seat range is Cobra only. On any base mount build, send us the frame part number and the seat part number together before ordering and we will confirm the pair. A runner, if you are adding one, adds height, so factor that in before you commit.

Bucket seats that fit

Four of these take base mount as well as side mount: the Sparco Sprint at £210, the OMP TRS-X at £220, the Cobra Monaco Pro at £235 and the Sparco Pro 2000 QRT at £499.50. Those four go straight onto any of the three subframes for a base mount build. Everything else here is side mount only and needs the Sparco FIA brackets on top of the subframe.

Height is worth reading carefully on this car. The Cobra Monaco Pro at £235, the OMP Champ-R at £318, the Mirco GT 3D at £324 and the Recaro Pole Position at £866.25 are all listed for under 6ft. The Sparco Sprint, OMP TRS-X, Sparco Pro 2000 QRT, OMP ARS-R, Sabelt GT3 and Sabelt Titan are listed for all heights. The OMP TRS-X at £220 is the cheapest seat here listed for all heights.

On waist size the Sabelt Titan X-Large is the wide-body option, covering 36 to 40 inches, and it is the only seat here rated for over 6ft and a 36 to 40in waist together. The OMP ARS-R covers 36 to 38in. Most of the rest are 32 to 36in.

The Recaro Pole Position (ABE) at £866.25 is not FIA homologated. It is a road and track seat. Every other bucket here carries FIA 8855-1999 approval. If the car gets scrutineered, the Recaro does not pass on approval alone, and that is worth knowing before spending £866.

On this car the frame question comes before the seat question, at least if you are considering the Cobra subframe. On the SW Motorsport or Planted frame the seat list is the whole page. From there, three things narrow it down: whether the car gets scrutineered and needs an FIA 8855-1999 seat, your height (the coupe roof is low and four of these are under 6ft only), and whether base or side mount suits the build. Give those three to Cameron and the right combination falls out quickly. He works out the fit and the best pairing for your specific car, and he does not answer the phone.

Reclining seats

These mount on the same subframes as the buckets, base mounted, no side mounts involved. All three are road and track rated, none are FIA homologated.

The Sparco R500 (£274.16) is the option to check if you are between 36 and 38 inches waist, because it covers that range where several other Sparco recliners cap at 36. Bolt pattern 345mm x 271mm, cloth trim, 4-point harness compatible, no head support wing. Sold as seat only, so add runners if you want the fore-aft adjustment back.

The Auto Style Type BS5 (£295) comes with runners already included, which at £295 makes it the complete reclining seat package at the lowest price on this page. The bolt pattern Auto Style publish is 345mm x 280mm, which differs from the 345mm x 271mm on the Sparco and from the unpublished patterns on the SW Motorsport and Planted frames. Ask us before pairing this seat with any of the three subframes for this car.

The Cobra Misano Anniversary (£1395) is a different kind of product from the other two. Part AUD9FODH581 is a TT Mk2 specific seat package built for the 8J. At 590mm wide and 885mm tall it covers a 32 to 38 inch waist and all heights. Made to order at 4 to 6 weeks. It is the one seat on this page that arrived already knowing which car it is going into.

Harnesses

There is no Schroth car-specific belt for the 8J. Schroth list a QuickFit ASM belt for the TT 8N (the first generation car), but not for the Mk2. On this car you are working from universal belts, and the question that comes before the belt is what the shoulder straps bolt to.

Shoulder straps want mounting behind the seat at roughly shoulder height, and the 8J gives you nothing factory back there. The choices are a harness bar, a cage with a harness bar built in (all three Custom Cages options below include one), or the car not getting a harness at all and using the standard seatbelt. If the car is heading for a cage the shoulder mounting solves itself. If not, sort the mounting point before you spend anything on the belt.

The TRS Magnum 6 Point Superlite at £245 is the cheapest FIA 8853-2016 belt here. The Schroth Profi 3×2 at £370.01 is on the same standard and is HANS friendly. The TRS Magnum 4 Point at £205 is FIA 8854-1998, an older standard some series no longer accept, so read the regulations before ordering it for competition use.

The Takata Drift belts and the TRS Clubman belts are road and track rated without FIA homologation. None of the four are listed as HANS compatible. Every FIA belt carries a manufacture date expiry that ends its competition life whether the belt has been worn or not.

Our recommendationsSort the anchorage before you buy the belt

There is no car-specific Schroth for the 8J, so fitting a harness means creating a mounting point that does not exist from the factory. If a cage is already on the plan, it comes with a harness bar and the belt is then the easy part. If a cage is not, ask us, because a bolt-in harness bar might be the right intermediate step before committing to a full cage. Tell us whether the car is getting a cage, what it does at weekends and whether a HANS is going on, and we will say which belt and which mounting suits it.

Roll cages for the 8J

Three Custom Cages options are listed for the TT Mk2. All three name the Coupe. None of them list the Roadster, so if yours is the convertible, ask before planning around any of this.

The CDS multipoint cage (17518) is £1268.35, weld in, MSUK compliant and road and track. The T45 multipoint cage (17519) is £1602.04 on the same fitment type and the same approvals. The T45 multipoint kit (part ATT/012, product 239204) is £1495 and steps up to FIA approved as well as MSUK compliant.

CDS and T45 are tube materials. The design and its certification are what a scrutineer reads. Custom Cages list the T45 kit as FIA approved where the straight multipoints are MSUK compliant and road and track. If you are building to a class, tell us what the cage has to satisfy before you order.

All three options include a harness bar in the build, which solves the shoulder strap anchorage problem covered in the harness section above.

What fits what

The mounting column covers the seat type, not the frame. All three frames support both base and side mount. For a base mount build on the SW Motorsport or Planted frame, confirm the bolt pattern with us before ordering. For a side mount build any seat in the side mount column works with those two frames and the Sparco FIA brackets. The Cobra frame is base mount and Cobra seats only.

Not for the 8J. Schroth list a QuickFit ASM belt for the TT 8N (the Mk1, 1998 to 2006) at £232.55, but that belt is for the first generation car and does not cross to the Mk2. On the 8J you are fitting a universal harness to a mounting point you have to create. The harness section above covers what that means in practice.

There is nothing factory behind the seat at shoulder height on an 8J. The options are a bolt-in harness bar, one of the Custom Cages options (all three below include a harness bar in the build), or not using a harness at all and sticking with the standard seatbelt. If a cage is on the plan, it solves the anchorage problem at the same time. If not, ask us and we will say what bolt-in options are available.

All three Custom Cages options name the Coupe. None of them list the Roadster. If yours is the convertible, ask before you plan around any of this. We will find out what is actually available for the Roadster rather than guess.

It is a TT Mk2 specific sport seat package, part AUD9FODH581. It is a reclining sport seat built for the 8J, at 590mm wide and 885mm tall, covering a 32 to 38in waist and all heights. Made to order at 4 to 6 weeks. The price is £1395. It is listed as a seat and fitting kit package, so ask us what is included in the package when you enquire.

No. The Planted bracket for the TT Mk2 (SB199) is listed specifically for the 8J. The TT shares the PQ35 platform with the Golf Mk5 and Mk6 but the floor mounting points are in different positions, so a Golf bracket does not fit the TT. Use the part listed for the TT Mk2 specifically.

The TT Mk2 is the 8J, built from October 2006. The main visual distinction from the front is the headlights: the Mk1 has round headlight pods set either side of a small grille, the Mk2 has swept-back full-width headlights that run into a large single-frame grille. The 8J is longer and lower looking and has a more angular body overall. If there is any doubt, send us the registration and we will confirm the chassis before you spend anything. The parts for the two cars are not interchangeable.

Among the buckets the Sparco Sprint at £210, OMP TRS-X at £220, Sparco Pro 2000 QRT at £499.50, OMP ARS-R at £428, Sabelt GT3 at £431 and Sabelt Titan X-Large at £511 are all listed for all heights. The OMP TRS-X is the cheapest of them. Keep the stack low on this car: base mount onto the subframe with no side mounts is the way to gain the most headroom.

What's the best FIA bucket seat for an Audi TT Mk2?

There is no single best seat for the TT Mk2, it comes down to your height and which frame you choose. Pick the frame first: SW Motorsport and Planted are open systems that take any brand, while the Cobra frame only takes Cobra seats.

Height matters more than usual on this car. Four of the FIA 8855-1999 shells listed are for under 6ft only, so taller drivers should look at the OMP TRS-X or the Sabelt Titan X-Large, which cover all heights or over 6ft respectively. Side mounts add 30-40mm and runners another 25-30mm, so factor that into how low you actually end up sitting.
