Audi A3 8L bucket seat guide

Type 8L, September 1996 to 2003

An 8L is cheap to buy now, and that is most of the reason people are fitting seats to them. Nearly thirty years after launch this is a first track car for a lot of owners, and the standard seat is usually what spoils the first session. You brace against the door card, you end up steering with your shoulders, and you come in tired.

What makes the 8L easier to buy for than most cars its age is that the fitting kit never went away. Four makers still list a frame built for this shell, Sparco, OMP, Corbeau and Recaro, and Schroth still make a harness specifically for it. Cars ten years newer often have one frame or none at all. So the question on this car is which of the four frames you want, and what goes on top of it.

Four frames, and what goes on top

Start with the frame, because it decides everything after it. All four bolt to the factory seat mounting points in place of the standard runners, so a straight floor needs no drilling, and all four sit the seat lower than the seat and runners you took out.

The part people get wrong is what the frame accepts. Sparco and Recaro both spell it out on their listings: these are frames for base mounted bucket seats and reclining sport seats, and they will not take a side mounted seat without side mounts or adaption bars. So a fixed back competition shell is a two part purchase on this car, the frame and then a set of side mounts, and the side mounts have to suit the shell you picked.

Brand matters more on some frames than others. Recaro sub-frames are Recaro only, which the listing is clear about and which holds true in practice. The Sparco, OMP and Corbeau side of it is more open than the listings suggest, because base mount Sparco, OMP, Cobra and Corbeau seats share a bolt pattern, and Sparco say so themselves on their side mount brackets, which they list as also fitting OMP, Cobra and Sabelt seats. If a pairing you want looks ruled out by a product page, ask us before you rule it out yourself.

☰

Frame plus side mounts

The competition route, and the lower of the two. The frame bolts to the floor, the side mounts pick up the sides of the shell, and the seat is fixed for good. You set it once while the trim is off, so it suits a track car or a car one person drives. Sparco sell a universal FIA steel side mount at 75 pounds a set, Cobra do theirs at 62 pounds a set, and Recaro have three different sets depending on which Recaro shell you have bought. Tell us the seat and we will match the mounts to it.

◫

Frame plus a base mount seat

The road route, and the one most 8Ls end up with. A reclining seat picks up the four holes in its own base and sits straight on the frame, so you keep the backrest adjustment and the car still works for a passenger. The catch is the bolt pattern. Five of them appear on this page, from 291mm by 330mm up to 405mm by 290mm, so the seat decides the frame here, not the reverse. Send us the exact seat and we will check it first.

The fitting kit for an 8L

Sparco at 72.50 pounds is the cheapest way onto the floor and OMP at 102.92 pounds is next. Corbeau are 245 pounds and Recaro 367.50 pounds, and both of those buy you into their own seat range, not a better frame. Every one of them is priced per seat, so changing both front seats means ordering the frame twice, and there is a driver side or passenger side option to pick on the Sparco, OMP and Recaro listings.

The Sparco listing carries one line people miss: the frame does not include a seat belt clip anchor point. Plan on keeping the original buckle and checking where it lands once the seat is in. The other thing we need from you is the seat itself. When a frame is ordered on its own, which seat is going on it settles whether the pairing works, so put it in the comments box at checkout and we will check it before anything ships.

A frame on its own will not take a fixed back shellThis is the single most common mistake on this car. The Sparco and Recaro listings both say the frame fits base mounted bucket seats and reclining sport seats, and that it will not fit a side mounted seat without adaption bars or side mounts. Nearly every fibreglass competition shell on this page is side mount. So if you are buying a fixed back seat, budget for the frame and a set of side mounts, and buy the mounts to suit the shell, not whichever set is cheapest. While the seat is out, look at where the belt buckle will sit afterwards. A bucket usually shifts it, and you want to be able to find it one handed with a helmet on.

The Recaro route

Recaro are worth a section of their own because they are the one brand here that genuinely is closed. Their sub-frames fit Recaro seats and nothing else, so if you want a Recaro shell in an 8L you need the Recaro frame, and if you want a Recaro frame there is no point pairing it with anything but a Recaro seat.

The side mounts split three ways by seat, so read this before ordering. The 160 pound set fits the Profi SPG and SPA and the Pro Racer SPG and SPA. The 179.50 pound set covers the Pole Position in both its FIA and ABE versions plus the Pro Racer SPG XL. The 155 pound FIA set covers the Apex, the Profi SPG and SPA and the Pro Racer SPG and SPA. Each set is priced per seat, same as the frame.

The Recaro double locking runners are the odd one out on this page, and useful beyond Recaro. They give 220mm of travel and the listing has them fitting Cobra, Corbeau, Sparco and OMP motorsport seats on side mounts as well as Recaro seats, so long as the seat is around 405mm across. If you want a fixed back shell that still slides, this is the part that does it.

Bucket seats that fit

Everything here works in an 8L on one of the four frames. Most of them are side mount, so they want side mounts underneath as well. Two do not: the Sparco Sprint and the Sprint L are listed for base mount and side mount both, and the Cobra Monaco Pro is the same, which makes those three the simplest seats to fit on this car and, at 210 to 237 pounds, three of the cheapest.

Sort out your size before your budget. The Cobra Suzuka T Pro-Fit is the narrowest seat on the page at 28in to 32in waist, and it is a big seat overall at 900mm tall on a 490mm base. The Sparco Sprint L goes the other way at 40in to 42in, which is the roomiest thing here by some margin, and the Recaro Profi SPG XL covers 36in to 40in. The OMP ARS-R sits at 36in to 38in. Everything else on the page is 32in to 36in, so if you are outside that, start with those four.

Height splits them too. The Recaro Profi SPG and SPG XL are listed for over 6ft and the Mirco RTX-7 covers both. The Sparco Sprint, the Sprint L, the Mirco RS2 and the OMP ARS-R are all listed as suiting all heights. The Cobra Suzuka, the Cobra Monaco Pro, the OMP Champ-R, the Corbeau RXC, the Recaro Pole Position and the Auto Style BS6 are all under 6ft. Put a tall driver in a short shell and the harness slots end up below the shoulder line, so the belts pull down on you instead of back, which is the opposite of what they are for.

Two of them are not FIA. The Auto Style BS6 is rated road and track and comes with sliders in the box, which is unusual here and worth the money if the car never sees a scrutineer. Everything else on this list is FIA 8855-1999. The Sparco Evo QRT does not carry a driver height or waist on its listing, so ask us and we will check it against your build before you commit.

Reclining seats

If the 8L is still doing road miles, a reclining seat is the easier buy and it bolts straight to any of the four frames without side mounts. You keep the recline, getting in and out stays easy, and everything below carries a road and track rating.

The bolt pattern is the number that decides this, and there are five across these twelve seats. The three Sparcos are 345mm by 271mm. The two Cobras are 291mm by 330mm. The two Recaros are 405mm by 290mm. The Auto Style JW and RS6-II are 345mm by 280mm and the Type AK is 405mm by 280mm. The two Corbeau pairs are the flexible ones, listed for 291mm by 330mm or 345mm by 271mm. Send us the seat and the frame together and we will confirm the pair before you order either.

Check what is in the box as well, because it varies. The three Auto Style seats come with sliders included where the Sparco, Cobra, Recaro and Corbeau seats are the seat on its own. The Corbeau Sportline RRB at 770 pounds and the Corbeau PSR at 465 pounds are both sold as pairs, so those prices cover two seats and do not compare like for like against a single one. The Cobra Misano Anniversary is made to order with a four to six week lead time, so it is not the seat to pick the week before a trackday, and at 590mm wide on a 520mm base it is the widest thing here. The Cobra Daytona is 580mm wide and 13.5kg, against 11.5kg for the Misano.

💬
Our picks, not the whole listFrame first, then the seat that suits you

Twenty six seats is far more choice than anybody needs for one hatchback. On an 8L the shortlist falls out of four answers: your waist and height, whether the car still does road miles, whether you need it to slide, and what you want to spend on the frame before you have bought a seat at all. Cameron works out the fit and the best combination for a given car, so send those over with a rough budget and he will cut it to two or three seats and tell you exactly what goes underneath each one. A short conversation beats an evening of cross referencing product pages.

Harnesses

The 8L is one of the few cars where the harness question has a proper answer already made for it. Schroth build a QuickFit ASM belt specifically for the A3 Type 8L, a 4 point bolt in set at 2in shoulder to 2in lap with a clip buckle, rated road and track, in black or red. Being car specific means the mounting is worked out for this shell instead of being left to you, which is the part that usually stalls a harness fitting.

For any of the universal belts, work out where the shoulder straps are going before you spend anything. They need a fixing behind the seat at around shoulder height that can take the load in a shunt, and the factory rear belt mounts were not put there for that job. The 8L is better placed than most cars on this site because cages are made for it, so this is a solvable problem here. Send us a photo of the area behind your front seats and we will tell you what will work.

On approvals, the Schroth Profi 3×2 and the TRS Magnum 6 point Superlite are FIA 8853-2016 and the TRS Magnum 4 point is FIA 8854-1998. Each of those has a date printed on it and stops counting for competition once that date passes, used or not, so an FIA belt is worth buying when a scrutineer is going to ask for it and hard to justify when nobody is. For a fast road 8L the Schroth QuickFit, a Takata Drift II or III, or a TRS Clubman covers it for a good deal less. One thing to watch if you run a head restraint: the Schroth QuickFit, both Takatas and both Clubman belts are listed as not HANS compatible, so that narrows you to the Schroth Profi 3×2 or one of the two TRS Magnums.

The 8L cage is weld in, the S3 kits are notJP Cages build a half cage listed for the Audi A3 Type 8L at 584.37 pounds, and its fitment is given as weld in, so it wants a workshop and it is not something to order thinking it bolts to the floor. JP also list a DIY half cage kit and a bolt in dash dodger under the Audi S3 Mk1, which is the same 8L generation of car. Whether either of those suits your particular shell is a question for us, not for a product page, so ask before you order and we will get it confirmed. Whichever way you go, pad any tube within reach of a helmet with FIA rated padding, tell your insurer because a cage is a notifiable modification, and read the current regulations for your class before you buy, not after.
💬
Our recommendationsStart with the belt made for the car

On most cars we tell people to sort the mounting before they buy belts. On an 8L there is a shortcut, because the Schroth QuickFit ASM is built for this exact shell and takes the guesswork out of it, and at 232.55 pounds it is not far off the price of a universal set. If you compete and your class wants FIA, that changes the answer, so tell us what you run in and whether a head restraint is going on and we will point you at the right set for it.

What fits what

Everything below fits an A3 8L on one of the four frames. Where they differ is the mounting, the approval and the size of driver they are built for. Where a cell says not listed, the maker does not publish that figure and we would sooner say so than fill it in for them. Ask us and we will go back to the manufacturer on it.

Common questions

One of four vehicle specific frames, depending on the seat you are fitting. Sparco make one at 72.50 pounds, OMP at 102.92 pounds, Corbeau at 245 pounds and Recaro at 367.50 pounds. All of them bolt to the factory seat mounting points in place of the standard runners, so a standard floor needs no drilling. If you are fitting a fixed back shell you also need a set of side mounts, because the frames take base mounted seats as they come.

One per seat. The Sparco and Recaro listings both state the price is for a single frame that fits one seat, so changing the driver and passenger seats means adding it to the basket twice. Sparco, OMP and Recaro all give you a driver side or passenger side option to pick as well, so check you have chosen the right one on each before the order ships.

No. Planted list an Audi A3 Hatchback bracket and it is dated 2003 to 2013, which is the 8P, the generation after this one. They also make one for the 2012 onwards car. Neither covers the 8L. Planted version their brackets per chassis, so an A3 in the title does not mean it fits every A3. Use one of the four frames on this page instead.

Only if the seat is base mountable. The Sparco Sprint, the Sprint L and the Cobra Monaco Pro are all listed for base mount as well as side mount, so those three go straight on. Everything else in the bucket seat list above is side mount only, and the Sparco and Recaro frame listings both say they will not take a side mounted seat without side mounts or adaption bars. So for most shells it is the frame plus a set of side mounts.

Usually yes, and the listings understate this. Base mount Sparco, OMP, Cobra and Corbeau seats share a bolt pattern, and Sparco say as much on their own side mount brackets, which they list as fitting OMP, Cobra and Sabelt seats too. Recaro is the genuine exception, where the frames and the mounts really are Recaro only. If you have a pairing in mind, send us both part numbers and we will confirm it instead of leaving you to read it off two product pages.

It depends which Recaro. The 160 pound set fits the Profi SPG and SPA and the Pro Racer SPG and SPA. The 179.50 pound set fits the Pole Position in FIA and ABE form plus the Pro Racer SPG XL. The 155 pound FIA set covers the Apex, the Profi SPG and SPA and the Pro Racer SPG and SPA. All three are priced per seat, so a pair means two sets.

Only if you add a runner. Side mounts on their own hold the seat in one spot, which sits lower and is fine in a car one person drives. The Sparco sliding runner kit at 34.95 pounds sits between the frame and a base mounted seat around 345mm wide. The Recaro double locking runners give 220mm of travel and, unusually, their listing covers Cobra, Corbeau, Sparco and OMP motorsport seats on side mounts as well as Recaro ones, so that is the part to look at if you want a fixed back shell that still slides.

The Recaro Profi SPG and the Profi SPG XL are both listed for over 6ft, and the Mirco RTX-7 covers over and under. The Sparco Sprint, the Sprint L, the Mirco RS2 and the OMP ARS-R are listed as suiting all heights. A taller shell puts the harness slots level with or above your shoulders, so the straps pull backwards instead of dragging down on your collarbones. Get that wrong and the seat works against you in every corner.

Start with the Sparco Sprint L, which is listed at 40in to 42in waist and is 237 pounds, or the Recaro Profi SPG XL at 36in to 40in. The OMP ARS-R covers 36in to 38in. Most of the rest of the page is 32in to 36in, and the Cobra Suzuka T Pro-Fit is narrower still at 28in to 32in, so that one is worth avoiding if width is your issue. A fibreglass shell gives you nothing once you are in it, so buy the size up rather than hoping.

Yes, and it is the reason the 8L is easier than most. Schroth build the QuickFit ASM specifically for the A3 Type 8L, a 4 point bolt in belt at 2in shoulder to 2in lap with a clip buckle, rated road and track, in black or red, at 232.55 pounds. Because it is built for this shell the mounting is already worked out. It is not HANS compatible, so if you run a head restraint you want the Schroth Profi 3×2 or one of the TRS Magnum sets instead.

Not always, but you do need a proper mounting point behind the seat at shoulder height, and the factory rear belt anchorages will not do. The Schroth QuickFit made for this car sidesteps the question because its mounting is designed in. If you want a cage, JP Cages list a half cage for the A3 8L, though its fitment is weld in, and they list a DIY half cage kit and a bolt in dash dodger under the Audi S3 Mk1, which is the same generation of car. Ask us before ordering any of them and we will get the fit confirmed against your shell.

FIA means the belt passed a test to a written standard. Whether it suits your car is a separate question. The Schroth Profi 3×2 and the TRS Magnum Superlite are FIA 8853-2016 and the TRS Magnum 4 point is FIA 8854-1998, and every one of them has a date printed on it that ends its competition life whether the belt has been worn or not, so you are buying a clock along with the harness. Buy FIA if your class requires it. For a fast road 8L the Schroth QuickFit made for the car, or a road and track rated Takata or TRS Clubman, is the better spend.

Usually yes, and on this car it needs checking properly. The Sparco frame listing states it does not include a seat belt clip anchor point, so the original buckle stays where it is while the seat around it moves. Once the seat is bolted down, make sure you can reach the buckle one handed and that the shell is not fouling the stalk. Sort it while the trim is still out and it costs you two minutes.

Only if it is the 8L, the first generation Audi built from September 1996 to 2003. If yours has the big single frame grille it is an 8P or later and the frames on this page will not fit it. The 8P is 2003 to 2013 and the 8V from 2012, and both have their own guides linked below. The S3 of this era is the same 8L shell, so this page covers that too, and the Recaro frame is listed for the A3 and S3 up to April 2003.

More help

If yours is a later A3 the 8P and 8V guides cover those cars and the different frames made for them. The TT Mk1 of the same era is worth a look if you are cross shopping, and if you want the fit on your 8L confirmed against a specific seat before you spend anything, the contact link is the quickest way to get it checked.
