The Clio Mk1 is properly old now, thirty-plus years on some of the last ones off the line, and the seats show it before anything else does. The bolsters have gone soft, the base has usually dropped a bit lower than it started, and on a 16v or a Williams the driving position was never brilliant to begin with. Owners hanging on to these cars tend to be past the point of casual ownership, so a seat swap is less an upgrade and more overdue maintenance on the one part of the car that has no service interval.
The good news is the frame market for the Mk1 never dried up. Two brands still list a subframe for it, which means the full range of fitting options is still open rather than picked over. Cameron works out which of the five below is worth the money for a given car, but the short version starts with the frame.

We stock a Clio Mk1 fitting frame from two of the three brands we rate, and between them they cover every seat in this guide. A frame is the vehicle specific base that bolts in place of the standard runners and sets your final seat height and position. Which one you buy decides which seats you can run, so this choice comes before you fall in love with a particular seat.
Part HF-RE-CL1, £255.00 inc VAT. Priced for one Cobra subframe, fits one seat, so a pair means adding it twice. Takes the Le Mans and any other Cobra recliner on this pattern.
Part 00499061, from £87.00 inc VAT a side, RHD driver and passenger listed separately. Covers the Clio Mk1 built May 1990 to February 1998. Takes the R100 and the GT.
Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern, and on the Clio Mk1 there are two that matter. Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm, which is what the Cobra subframe is built around. Sparco recliners use 345mm x 271mm, which is what the Sparco subframe is built around, and neither brand’s seat goes on the other’s frame. The two Corbeau seats in this guide are the exception: both the Sportline RRS Low Base and the Sportsman are drilled for 291mm and 345mm, so either one bolts straight to whichever frame you have already bought.
| Seat | Bolt pattern | Cobra subframe | Sparco subframe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sparco R100 | 345 x 271 | No | Fits |
| Corbeau Sportline RRS Low Base | 291 or 345 | Fits | Fits |
| Cobra Le Mans | 291 x 330 | Fits | No |
| Sparco GT | 345 x 271 | No | Fits |
| Corbeau Sportsman | 291 or 345 | Fits | Fits |
The R100 is the recliner we sell more of than any other, and on a car this old it is usually the sensible place to start. It is a compact seat with an open, flat base, which suits the Mk1’s tight cabin and does not fight you climbing in and out of a three door. Sparco list it as suitable for all waist sizes and for drivers both over and under six foot, so it is a hard seat to be the wrong shape for. Between the price and the fit range, it is the pick that leaves the most budget for the frame itself.
The RRS Low Base is the seat to pick if you have not settled on a frame yet, because it is drilled for both patterns and bolts straight to whichever one you buy. The Low Base version also buys back headroom for taller drivers, which matters more in a car this small than it does in most. Corbeau’s sculpted backrest gives noticeably more shoulder support than either Sparco option, without the built-to-order wait of the Cobra range.
The Le Mans is the seat I point people at when the Clio does more than the odd track day. Its bolsters at the shoulders and thighs are deeper than anything else in this guide, so your body stays put mid-corner and your arms are free to steer rather than brace. It is built to order through Cobra’s Signature range, spacer fabric, vinyl or leather, contrast stitching, heating or lumbar if you want them, or you can go straight for the Le Mans Heritage if you want the period look off the shelf without speccing your own trim. This one only goes on the Cobra subframe.
The GT is the retro pick, and on a genuine Mk1 16v or Williams it earns its place on looks alone as much as fit. Sparco’s own published fit range is snugger than the rest of this guide, 32 to 36 inch waist and under six foot, so it suits a smaller driver better than a big one. If that range does not describe you, pair it in the same car with a wider-fitting seat from this list, the R100 or either Corbeau, rather than force the GT onto a driver it was not sized for. The Houndstooth edition uses the same shell and pattern with a wider published fit and a heritage weave that matches the car’s period as well as the plain GT does.
We keep the Sportsman for genuine classic and vintage cars, and a Mk1 16v or Williams qualifies without any stretching of the definition, this is the car the term hot hatch classic was written for. We would not put this seat on a Clio 172 or a Mk2, but on an original Mk1 it sits right alongside the GT as a period-appropriate choice, with a wider published fit range and the same dual pattern as the RRS Low Base, so it bolts to either frame you have chosen.
Both frames use the Clio’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard, unmodified floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new. Between seat and frame go the sliding runners, and they follow the same pattern logic as the frames. One ordering quirk worth knowing: both frames are priced for one seat position, so a pair means adding the frame twice, once for driver and once for passenger. Sparco lets you pick the side from the listing options; on the Cobra listing tell us the side in the order notes, as the product description asks.
| Your seat | Runners to order | Works on |
|---|---|---|
| Sparco R100 or GT | Sparco sliding runner kit, £78.00 a pair | Sparco subframe |
| Cobra Le Mans | Cobra 291 sliding runners, £117.60 a pair | Cobra subframe |
| Corbeau RRS Low Base or Sportsman, on a Cobra subframe | Corbeau 291mm sliding runners, £117.60 a pair | Cobra subframe |
| Corbeau RRS Low Base or Sportsman, on a Sparco subframe | Corbeau 345mm sliding runners, £117.60 a pair | Sparco subframe |
The Sparco listing covers the Clio Mk1 built May 1990 to February 1998, which is the whole run. The Clio Mk2 that followed it, the Clio 172 and 182, and the Mk2 Facelift each use their own separate frame listings, none of which fit a Mk1 floor. Check your car’s date if you bought it without full history.

Prices include VAT and were correct on 15 August 2026. Where a weight says not published, the manufacturer does not give one and we will not guess it. Waist and height figures are the manufacturers’ published fitment ranges; if you are on a boundary, ask us before ordering.
Not on a standard floor. Both frames use the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts properly and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new.
No. The Cobra subframe is built around the 291mm x 330mm pattern and the Sparco subframe around 345mm x 271mm, and the two brands do not cross over. The Corbeau RRS Low Base and the Corbeau Sportsman are the exception, both drilled for either pattern, so they fit whichever frame you have already bought.
Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. Tell us when you order if you are planning harnesses and we will make sure the whole setup works together.
Both are priced for one seat position, so a pair means buying the frame twice either way. The Sparco listing lets you choose RHD driver or passenger side from the product options. The Cobra listing is one price regardless of side, so add the fitting frame to your order and tell us which side it is for in the checkout comments, as the product description asks.
The Mk1 ran from May 1990 to February 1998. The Clio 172, the 182, the standard Mk2 and the Mk2 Facelift that followed all use their own separate frame listings, and none of them fit a Mk1 floor. Check the date on your registration document if you bought the car without full history.
If it were my money: the R100 on the Sparco frame for a road car on a sensible budget, because it does most of the job for the least outlay. The RRS Low Base if you have not settled on a frame yet, since it keeps both routes open while you decide. The Le Mans on the Cobra subframe if the Clio does regular track days and you want it built around you, in your own trim. And if the car is a genuine Mk1 16v or Williams that still wears its original colour and badges, the GT or the Sportsman are both worth the small premium for looking like they always belonged there, just watch the GT’s tighter fit range before you order.
We wrote about dropping a Sparco R100 into a Clio a while back; this guide is the fuller version with the frame maths worked through properly. If you are between two of the seats above, or between sizes, get in touch with your height and waist measurement and we will talk it through before you spend anything.
