Top 5 reclining seat choices for your Porsche Cayman, including our fitting guide

“Cayman” has covered three different cars since 2005, and that catches more owners out than you would think when it comes to fitting a seat. The 987, the 981 and the 718 all share the same brief, a mid-engine coupe built to sit closer to the 911 than Porsche’s marketing ever admitted, near even weight distribution and a driving position that was already good by factory standards. What none of them do is hold you the way the chassis deserves once the standard seat has had a decade or two of use, or once you start doing track days in a car that was built for spirited road driving rather than a circuit.

Which frame you can order depends on which Cayman is sat on your driveway, and that is worth sorting before you fall for a seat online. We stock two fitting frame routes for this car, and one of them needs a bit of care over generation. Read the note below before you order anything.

  • Two frame routes in stock for the Cayman: Cobra and Planted Technology
  • Cobra frames take 291mm pattern seats direct, Planted takes any pattern with a matching runner
  • Every seat in this guide is listed as 4 point harness compatible
  • Both routes bolt to the factory mounting points, no drilling on a standard floor

The two frame routes into a Porsche Cayman

We stock a fitting frame for the Cayman from two brands, and between them they cover every seat in this guide. A frame is the vehicle specific base that bolts to the floor in place of the standard runners, and it sets your final seat height. Which frame you buy decides which seats you can run, so this choice comes first, and on this car it comes with a generation catch worth reading before you order.

291

Cobra subframe

Part SU-PO-CA, £255.00 inc VAT, sold individually and fits one seat. Pairs with Cobra's own runners and takes the Le Mans, the Daytona and the Corbeau PSR directly.

ANY

Planted bracket

Part SB017-4960, £222.60 inc VAT a side, RHD driver and passenger. A flat base that takes any seat in this guide, paired with runners matching that seat's pattern.

Which Cayman is this frame for?The Cobra subframe we sell (SU-PO-CA) is listed simply as "Porsche Cayman" with no generation given. Cobra also lists two newer subframes we do not stock as a fitting route here: one for the 981 (2012 to 2016) and one for the 982/718 (2016 on). The plain, undated listing is the earlier of the three, so treat it as covering the original 987 Cayman, built 2005 to 2012, and tell us your registration year before ordering if you are not certain. The Planted bracket carries no generation split on its listing at all, which makes it the safer route if you have not confirmed which Cayman you have, though we would still check your exact model before it ships.

The number that decides it

Every reclining seat we sell bolts down through a base mount pattern, and on this car there are three that matter. Cobra recliners use 291mm x 330mm, which is what the Cobra subframe is built around. Sparco recliners use a different pattern again, 345mm x 271mm, and the Recaro Sportster CS wider still at 405mm x 290mm, and neither lines up with the Cobra subframe. The Corbeau PSR is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, which is why it bolts straight to the Cobra subframe as well as the Planted bracket. For the Sparco and the Recaro, the Planted bracket with the matching runner is the only route we sell for this car.

Pick the seat firstThen buy the frame route that matches its pattern. The Corbeau PSR keeps both routes open. If you have not settled on a seat yet and want the Sparco or the Recaro in the mix, go straight for the Planted bracket. My job at GSM is working out exactly this combination for a given car and driver, so if you are stuck between two, ask.

Cobra Le Mans: the everyday value pick

The Le Mans is the rounder, more road-mannered shape in Cobra’s lineup, and on a Cayman that spends most of its life on the road rather than a circuit, that is exactly what you want. It matches the Cobra subframe directly, so the pattern question never comes into it, and it is built to order through Cobra’s Signature range, meaning the trim ends up matching whatever the rest of your cabin looks like rather than a stock colour someone else picked. Cobra lists it as suitable for waists from 32 to 38 inches and any height, which covers most drivers who ask us about this car.

  • From £619.00 inc VAT, built to order in your trim
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights, 13.4kg
  • Spacer fabric, vinyl or leather trim, optional heating and lumbar
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe or Planted bracket

Cobra Daytona: the support pick

The Daytona carries deeper bolsters through the shoulders and thighs than the Le Mans sat next to it, and it is the one I point Cayman owners at once track days start outnumbering road miles. The chassis already finds more grip than most road seats can hold onto through a fast corner, and the Daytona is built to keep up with that rather than let your body slide about while the car does the work. Same Cobra subframe fitment as the Le Mans, same built-to-order Signature trim options, just a firmer hold once you are actually pushing on.

  • From £599.00 inc VAT, built to order in your trim
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights, 13.5kg
  • Spacer fabric, vinyl or leather trim, optional heating and lumbar
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 291mm x 330mm pattern: Cobra subframe or Planted bracket

Corbeau PSR: keeps every route open

The PSR is the seat to pick if you have not committed to a frame yet, or if you are still working out which generation of Cayman you actually have. It is drilled for both 291mm and 345mm, so it bolts straight to the Cobra subframe as easily as it does the Planted bracket, and either way you are not locked into a route while the generation question above gets sorted out. The trim is a plain black cloth rather than anything built to order, which keeps the price down against the two Cobra seats either side of it, and Corbeau lists optional heating and inflatable lumbar support if you want to spec it further.

  • £558.00 inc VAT
  • 32 to 38 inch waists, all heights
  • Cloth trim, optional heated seats and inflatable lumbar support
  • Listed 4 point compatible
  • Drilled for both patterns: fits the Cobra subframe and the Planted bracket

Sparco R100: the budget option

The R100 does not fit the Cobra subframe, its 345mm pattern is built for a Sparco frame rather than this car’s own subframe, but it goes on the Planted bracket with a Sparco runner without any fuss, and it is by far the cheapest way into a proper reclining seat if the Cayman is still mostly a road car. Sparco list it as suitable for all waist sizes and for drivers both over and under six foot, which is an unusually wide fit for the price, and the flat open base keeps the footwell easy to live with day to day.

  • From £282.00 inc VAT, the cheapest way into this guide
  • All waist sizes, drivers over and under six foot
  • Cloth trim, also available in vinyl
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 345mm x 271mm pattern: Planted bracket only on this car

Recaro Sportster CS: the premium pick

Every enthusiast forum thread about upgrading a Cayman’s seats seems to end up mentioning this one eventually, and the reason is simple, it holds you firmly through the shoulders and thighs without the aggressive squeeze of a full bucket, which suits a car that still does a fair share of daily miles. Recaro list it as suitable for all waist sizes and all heights, unusual for a seat with this much support, and the heated version is worth the extra if the car sees winter use. It does not fit the Cobra subframe, its 405mm base is a different pattern again, so on this car it goes on the Planted bracket with a Recaro-compatible runner.

  • From £1,581.30 inc VAT, £2,154.60 with heating
  • All waist sizes, all heights
  • Leather and suede trim, heated option available
  • Harness slots, listed 4 point compatible
  • 405mm x 290mm pattern: Planted bracket with a Recaro-compatible runner

Getting it bolted down

Both frames bolt to the Cayman’s factory seat mounting points, so there is no drilling on a standard floor. Torque the floor bolts properly and check seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new. Between seat and frame go the sliding runners, and they follow the same pattern logic as the frames. The Cobra subframe is sold per seat and the Planted bracket is sold per side, so a pair of seats means adding the frame to the basket twice either way.

The three Caymans line up as the 987 from 2005 to 2012, the 981 from 2012 to 2016, and the 982 (badged 718 from launch) from 2016 on. The frame route above is understood to cover the 987. If you are on a 981 or a 982/718, tell us when you order and we will point you at the correct generation-specific frame rather than the one in this guide.

Common questions

Do I need to drill the floor of my Cayman?

Not on a standard floor. Both frames bolt to the factory seat mounting points. Torque the floor bolts properly and check the seat belt buckle clearance before you drive, because a sport seat often sits the buckle somewhere new.

Can I put a Sparco or Recaro seat on the Cobra subframe?

No. The Cobra subframe is built around the 291mm x 330mm pattern, and the Sparco R100 and Recaro Sportster CS use different patterns again. The Corbeau PSR is the exception, drilled for both 291mm and 345mm. If you want the Sparco or the Recaro, go straight for the Planted bracket with the matching runner.

Will these seats take a 4 point harness?

Every seat in this guide is listed by its manufacturer as 4 point compatible, with belt slots in the backrest. If you are planning harnesses, tell us when you order and we will make sure the whole setup works together.

Why does the Cobra frame only cover one generation of Cayman?

The Cobra subframe we stock (SU-PO-CA) is listed generically as "Porsche Cayman" with no year given, and Cobra has since added generation-specific listings for the 981 and the 982/718 that we do not carry as a route here. We treat the plain listing as covering the original 987, built 2005 to 2012. If you are on a later car, tell us your registration year before ordering and we will confirm the right frame rather than let you order the wrong one.

Would a fixed bucket seat suit my Cayman better?

Some owners prefer a bucket over a reclining seat, especially once track use becomes the main reason for the upgrade. We have written up a real customer fitting for this exact car, working through the space and hip-width constraints a Cayman's cabin puts on a bucket seat choice: read the Cayman bucket seat fitting story. If you are not sure which route suits you, ask us before you order either way.

What I would actually buy

If it were my money: the Le Mans on the Cobra subframe for a road car doing occasional trackdays, because the trim ends up matching the cabin and the fitment is as direct as it gets. The PSR if you have not fully confirmed which Cayman generation you own yet, since it keeps both routes open while you sort that out. The Daytona once the car does more circuit time than road miles and you want the bolstering to match. The R100 if budget is doing the deciding and you are happy running the Planted bracket. And the Sportster CS if you want the seat every other Cayman owner online eventually recommends, and are prepared to pay for it.

Every combination above uses parts that bolt straight to the Cayman’s factory mounting points, once you have confirmed which generation you are working with. If you are between two of these seats, or between sizes, get in touch with your height, waist measurement and registration year and we will talk it through before you spend anything.
