Audi A5 1st generation bucket seat guide

8T, 2007 to 2016, coupe, Sportback and cabriolet, including the S5

These are cheap enough now that a fair few are being used properly, and that is usually what brings people to this page. The standard seat in an 8T is a comfortable thing built for a long motorway run, and it gives up early once the car is being driven hard. The fix is straightforward, because there is one frame made for this chassis and it takes both kinds of seat.

The thing worth thinking about on a coupe is height. The roof is lower than the saloon it shares its mechanicals with, and the standard seat already sits you fairly high. Fitting a frame drops you, which is what you want, but if you are tall it also decides whether a helmet fits under the roof lining. That is why the seat height matters more here than the badge on the shell.

One frame, and why it sits you lower

A frame bolts to the factory seat mounting points in place of the standard runners. A standard floor needs no drilling, and the seat ends up lower than the seat and runners you took out. On a coupe that is the part worth understanding, because you are trading the height the standard seat gave you for support, and getting some headroom back in the process.

Planted make one bracket for this car, listed for the A5 and the S5 from 2007 to 2016, at 185.50 pounds. It is priced per seat, so a pair means ordering it twice. Their listing says the seat mounts to the frame either directly or on side mounts, so both routes are open and you are not forced down one path by the mounting.

What there is not, on this car, is anything else made for it. No car specific harness, no vehicle specific cage. The frame is the A5 part and everything else on this page is universal kit chosen to suit it.

◫

Frame plus a base mount seat

A reclining seat or a base mountable bucket picks up the four holes in its own base and bolts to the frame. You keep the recline, which on a two door matters more than it sounds, because tipping the seat forward is how anybody gets into the back. One thing to settle first: Planted do not publish the bolt pattern for this frame, so send us the seat you want to pair with it and we will get the number confirmed before you buy either part.

☰

Frame plus side mounts

The competition route and the lower of the two, which in a coupe is worth a few centimetres of headroom. The frame bolts to the floor, a pair of side mounts picks up the sides of the shell, and the seat is fixed where you set it. Cobra sell a steel set at 62 pounds, Endurance at 29 pounds, and Sparco at 75 pounds with their own FIA approval and a listing that covers OMP, Cobra and Sabelt shells too.

The fitting kit for an 8T

The frame is the only part that has to match the car. Planted version per chassis, so the 1st generation bracket is for the 2007 to 2016 car and does not cross to the 2016 onwards one. If you are not sure which you have, the 8T has the softer rounded nose and the headlight with a slim LED strip along the bottom edge, where the later car has a sharper, more angular light with a stepped lower edge.

Everything else here is a choice. Side mounts are only needed if the seat is side mount. A runner is only needed if you want to keep the fore and aft adjustment, and on a two door that also means keeping the tilt mechanism that lets people into the back, so think about whether the car ever carries passengers before you fix a seat in one spot.

Check the headroom before you pick the shellThis is the one worth doing on a coupe. Sit in the car before you order and work out how much space you have above your head with a helmet on, because the frame will drop you but a tall fibreglass shell with a high seat base can give some of it back. The same applies to getting in: an 8T has a long door and a low roof, and a wide shell with high side bolsters makes the step over the sill harder than it looks in the photographs. If you are close to the limit, tell us your height and whether the car is going on track in a helmet, and we will point you at the seats that suit rather than the ones that look best. While the seat is out, check where the standard belt buckle ends up as well, because a bucket usually moves it.

Bucket seats that fit

The Cobra Monaco Pro at 235 pounds is the only bucket here listed for base mount as well as side mount, so it is the one that goes on the frame with nothing added. It is also the cheapest FIA shell on the page. Everything else is side mount and needs a set underneath, which on this car starts at 29 pounds.

Height first, because of the roof. The Mirco RS2 3D, the Sabelt GT3, the OMP ARS-R, the Cobra Imola GT and the Corbeau Sprint X System 5 XL are listed for all heights, and the Mirco RTS-2 Velour covers over and under 6ft. The Cobra Monaco Pro, the OMP Champ-R, the OMP RT and the Recaro Pole Position are under 6ft. If you are tall and going on track in a helmet, start with the all heights shells and talk to us about the seat base height before you order.

On width, the Corbeau Sprint X System 5 XL at 800 pounds covers 36in to 40in, the Mirco RTS-2 Velour at 349 pounds covers 32in to 36in and 36in to 40in on the same listing, and the OMP ARS-R covers 36in to 38in. Those three are the ones to look at for a broader driver. A fibreglass shell gives you nothing once you are in it, so take the size up if you are between two.

Two on approvals. The Cobra Imola GT at 445.50 pounds is rated road and track rather than FIA 8855-1999, which suits a car that will not be scrutineered and rules it out of most competition. The Sparco Evo L QRT carries no driver height or waist figure on its listing, so ask us and we will check it against your build before you commit.

Reclining seats

On a two door there is a practical argument for a reclining seat that does not apply to a saloon. The backrest has to tip forward for anybody to get into the back, and a fixed back shell removes that entirely. If the rear seats are ever used, a recliner is the answer. Everything below is base mount and carries a road and track rating.

The range here runs from 235 pounds to a shade over 1500. The Sparco R100 Vinyl at 235 pounds and the R500 Fabric at 274.16 pounds are the sensible end, the Auto Style GT Red Tartan at 287.50 pounds is the one people either love or walk straight past, and the Sparco SPR at 1549.12 pounds is the other end entirely.

Bolt patterns split them four ways. The Sparco R100 Vinyl, the R500 Fabric, the R333 and the SPR are 345mm x 271mm. The Cobra Daytona and the Cobra Misano Anniversary are 291mm x 330mm. The Auto Style GT Red Tartan is 405mm x 280mm on its own. The Corbeau VLS, the Sportline RRS Low Base and the PSR pair are listed for 291mm x 330mm or 345mm x 271mm, which makes them the most flexible things here. Since Planted do not publish their pattern, send us the pair you are thinking of and we will confirm it before you order.

💬
Our picks, not the whole listIn a coupe, start with your height

Twenty two seats is more choice than anybody needs, and on an 8T the filter that actually helps is not price, it is how much room you have above your head and how you get into the car. The shortlist falls out of your height and waist, whether a helmet is going on, and whether anybody ever sits in the back. Cameron works out the fit and the best combination for a given car, so send those over with a rough budget and he will cut this page to two or three seats and tell you exactly what goes underneath each one. On a coupe that conversation is worth having before you order rather than after.

Harnesses

There is no car specific harness for the A5, so you are fitting a universal belt and the mounting is yours to work out. Do that part first, because it is the half of the job that stalls people.

The shoulder straps want a fixing behind the seat at roughly shoulder height that can take the load in a shunt, and the factory rear belt mounts were not put there for that job. A coupe is a slightly awkward shape for this, because the rear seats sit close behind the fronts and there is less room to run the straps at the right angle than there is in a saloon. Send us a photo of the area behind your front seats and we will tell you what will work before you spend anything on belts.

The Sparco Competition H-3 at 185 pounds is the cheapest current FIA belt here, a 6 point steel set rated FIA 8853-2016 and listed HANS friendly. The Schroth Profi 3×2 and the TRS Magnum 6 Point Superlite are the same standard at 370.01 and 245 pounds, and the TRS Magnum 4 Point is FIA 8854-1998. Each of those carries a date that ends its competition life whether the belt has been worn or not.

For a fast road 8T a Takata Drift II or III or a TRS Clubman covers it for less. If you run a head restraint, note that both Takatas and both Clubman belts are listed as not HANS compatible, which leaves the Sparco H-3, the Schroth and the two TRS Magnums.

💬
Our recommendationsSort the mounting before you buy the belts

With no belt made for this car and no cage made for it either, the mounting decides which harness makes sense, so it is worth answering first. Tell us whether the car is road, trackday or competition, whether a head restraint is going on, and what is behind the seats now, and we will tell you what the shoulder straps can bolt to and which belt suits it. On a coupe the strap angle is the part people get wrong, so a photo saves a lot of guessing.

Mounting the shoulder straps

Nobody makes a vehicle specific roll cage or harness bar for the A5, in either generation. That is worth saying plainly, because the cages listed for the A4 of the same era are built around a different bodyshell and we are not going to sell you one on the strength of the badge matching.

What that leaves is a fabricated harness bar made to fit the car, which is the usual answer if all you need is a proper anchorage for the shoulder straps, and a smaller job than a full cage on a road car. If you are heading for competition and your class requires a cage, it will be a custom build and a conversation with a cage builder.

Ask us either way, and we will also check whether anything has been added for this shell since. If a cage does go in, read the current regulations for your class first, keep any sign off paperwork with the logbook, pad any tube within reach of a helmet, and tell your insurer, because a cage is a notifiable modification.

What fits what

Everything below fits an A5 8T on the Planted frame, with side mounts where the mounting column says side mount. Where a cell says not listed, the maker does not publish that figure and we would sooner say so than fill it in for them. Ask us and we will go back to the manufacturer on it.

Common questions

The Planted A5/S5 1st generation bracket at 185.50 pounds per seat, listed for the car built 2007 to 2016. It bolts to the factory seat mounting points in place of the standard runners, so a standard floor needs no drilling. It is priced per seat, so changing both front seats means ordering it twice. It is the only frame made for this chassis.

The 8T was built from 2007 to 2016. It has a softer, more rounded nose, a trapezoidal grille and headlights with a slim LED strip running along the bottom edge on later cars. The 2016 onwards car has a wider, lower hexagonal grille and sharper headlights with a stepped, almost jagged lower edge, plus a hard crease down the flanks. The frames are different and do not swap, so if there is any doubt send us the registration.

Usually yes, and on a coupe that is half the point. The frame replaces the standard seat and runners and sits the seat lower, so you gain height above your head. How much depends on the shell, because a seat with a high base gives some of it back. If you are tall and going on track in a helmet, tell us your height and we will point you at the shells that suit rather than the ones that photograph well.

Planted do not publish one for this frame. That is the honest answer and we would rather give it than repeat a guess. It matters because the reclining seats on this page sit on two different patterns, 291mm x 330mm and 345mm x 271mm, with some Corbeaus listed for either. If you are pairing a base mount seat with this frame, send us both part numbers and we will get the pattern confirmed by Planted before you buy either. If you are using side mounts it does not apply.

Only with a reclining seat. The backrest tipping forward is how anybody gets into the rear of a two door, and a fixed back bucket removes that completely. If the rear seats are ever used, buy a recliner. If the car is a track car and the back is full of tools, a fixed back shell is the better seat and the access does not matter.

Three options here. The Endurance steel M8 set at 29 pounds is the cheapest and is listed FIA approved and road and track. Cobra do their own steel set at 62 pounds. The Sparco set at 75 pounds carries its own FIA approval and their listing names OMP, Cobra and Sabelt shells as well as Sparco, so if you want the mounting hardware matched to a specific shell they are worth the difference. For most builds the Endurance set does the job.

The Corbeau Sprint X System 5 XL at 800 pounds covers 36in to 40in waist and is listed for all heights. The Mirco RTS-2 Velour at 349 pounds covers 32in to 36in and 36in to 40in on the same listing, which makes it the better value of the two and the most adaptable shell here. The OMP ARS-R covers 36in to 38in. Among the reclining seats, the three Corbeaus cover 32in to 38in.

Only if you add a runner. Side mounts on their own hold the seat in one place, which sits lower and suits a car one person drives. The Sparco sliding runner kit at 34.95 pounds is the usual answer under a base mounted seat, and the Cobra premium runners at 70 pounds are the better made option under a Cobra seat. Neither is FIA approved, so treat both as road and trackday parts.

No. There is no car specific belt for either generation of A5, so you are fitting a universal harness and working out the mounting yourself. A coupe is a slightly awkward shape for it, because the rear seats sit close behind the fronts and the strap angle is harder to get right than in a saloon. Send us a photo of the area behind your front seats and we will tell you what will work.

No, and we would rather say so than sell you something made for a different car. The cages listed for the A4 of the same era are built around a different bodyshell. If you need an anchorage for the shoulder straps, a fabricated harness bar made to fit the car is the usual answer and a much smaller job than a cage. Ask us and we will check whether anything has been added for this shell since.

FIA means the belt passed a test to a written standard. Whether it suits your car is a separate question. The Sparco Competition H-3 at 185 pounds, the Schroth Profi 3×2 and the TRS Magnum Superlite are FIA 8853-2016 and the TRS Magnum 4 Point is FIA 8854-1998, and each carries a date that ends its competition life whether the belt has been worn or not. Buy FIA if your class requires it. For a fast road 8T a Takata or a TRS Clubman covers it for less, as long as you are not running a head restraint.

Usually yes, and it is worth checking properly on a coupe. The original buckle stays where it is while the seat around it moves, and in a two door the belt feed is often on the seat or just behind your shoulder, so check the reach with the door shut before you finish the job. Sort it while the trim is still out and it costs you two minutes instead of an evening.

Yes. The Planted frame is listed for the A5 and the S5 together and the floor is the same car, so everything on this page applies. The Sportback and the cabriolet of this generation are the same chassis too. If you want the fit confirmed against a specific seat, send us the registration and we will check it.
