Honda Prelude Bucket Seat Guide
The Honda Prelude (1992 to 2001)
The Prelude is one of those cars people keep rather than sell, and the seats are usually the first thing to go once the suspension is sorted.
It is a big coupe with a low roof and a long door, which is a better combination for fitting a bucket than it sounds. There is kit for both the fourth and fifth generation cars and it does not interchange, so the first job is working out which one is sitting on your drive. Matching seats to frames is what I do here, and the Prelude is an easy one to get right once the year is settled. I am Cameron, by the way.
- Six fitting kits listed, all in stock
- Two mounting routes: side mount or base mount
- Kits split 1992 to 1996 and 1997 to 2001
- Everything is priced and supplied per side
Start here, side mount or base mount
Every fitting kit on this page is one or the other, and they do not mix without adaption bars. Work out which one you want before you look at a single seat.
Side mount
The seat is held by its sides, on brackets that bolt through the holes in the shell. That is how every FIA fixed back bucket mounts. It sits you lowest and it is the stiffest way to hold a seat. On a Prelude that means the PCI kits.
Base mount
The seat sits on top of a frame and bolts down through its underside. Every reclining sport seat mounts this way, and so do a good number of road going buckets. On a Prelude that means the Planted brackets.
Which Prelude have you got
Everything on this page splits at 1997, and getting it wrong is the most common ordering mistake on this car.
The fourth generation runs 1992 to 1996, the BB1 to BB4 cars, the ones with the pop-up-free wide nose and the wraparound rear screen. The fifth generation runs 1997 to 2001, the BB5 to BB9 cars, squarer at the front and the last Prelude Honda made.
PCI and Planted both make a bracket for each, and they are not interchangeable. If you are not certain, send us the registration and we will check it.
The side mount route, PCI Racing
PCI make two kits per generation, so four in total for the Prelude. The adjustable seat mount is the one most people want: a one piece laser cut and CNC folded 3mm steel base that bolts to the factory seat mounting points, supplied with the side mounts and the full bolt pack. Getting into a proper side mount setup on a Prelude starts at £210 with it.
The sliding sub frame is the same idea running on PCI’s S1 sliders instead of fixed adjustment. Worth the difference if the car gets shared, and on a Prelude that is a fair bet given how many are daily driven. The full range is in our PCI Racing frames category.
- Comes with the frame, the side mounts and the full bolt pack
- Side mounts adjust 375mm to 445mm across
- 246mm of fore and aft adjustment
- 5 and 6 point sub belt mounting locations built into the base
- 3mm carbon steel, laser cut and CNC folded from one piece
- Ordered as RHD driver side or RHD passenger side

Which bucket seats fit the PCI kit
PCI’s fitment list for these kits names Cobra, Corbeau, Mirco and Sparco side mount seats. It is worth reading before you order.
Sparco
The Sprint is the sensible way in. Steel framed shell, FIA 8855-1999, and one of the narrower seats we keep. The Rev QRT is the step up and moves to a fibreglass shell. In a car with a door as long as the Prelude’s you can actually get in and out of a deep shell without a fight, so the Rev is a more realistic daily proposition here than it is in a hatchback.
OMP
The TRS-E is the cheapest FIA seat I would happily put in a road car, and the velour wears better than people expect. The Champ-R is the one to have if the car sees track days, deeper leg bolsters and it actually holds you under braking.
Mirco
The GT 3D is our best selling seat, full stop. The 3D fabric does not get slippery once it warms up, which matters in a car with as much glass as a Prelude. The RS2 3D sits you a little more upright if you are still doing road miles.
Recaro
The Pole Position fits and it is the seat everyone wants. It is also the most expensive thing on this page by a distance. The Profi SPG is the one to look at if you are over 6ft, it is the only seat on this list rated that way, and the Prelude has the leg room to make that worthwhile.
Cobra
The Monaco Pro is the standard width Cobra and it is what PCI’s fitment note is pointing at. Steel framed, HANS friendly, and it has been our best selling bucket for years. Ring us before ordering the XL version.
Corbeau
The Pro Series X System 1 is the standard width Corbeau. Fibreglass shell, deeper than the Cobra, and worth sitting in before you commit. As with the Cobra, check with us before going XL.

Anything side mounted on the standard width list will bolt to the PCI kit, and the range runs a lot deeper than the seats shown here. We have picked a spread of brands and price points to show what the car takes. The Prelude has more room than most of what we fit, so if you have your eye on something bigger, tell us the seat and we will check it before you order.
The base mount route, Planted Technology
If you want a reclining seat, or a base mount bucket, this is your route. Planted make one bracket per generation, so pick by year.
Put the seat you are fitting in the checkout comments and we will check the pattern matches before it ships.
- Cross brand: takes OMP, Corbeau, Cobra, Recaro, Sparco and Sabelt base mount seats
- Works with the original seat belt clip buckle, which matters on a road car
- SB235 covers 1992 to 1996
- SB301 covers the fifth generation car
- One frame per side, supplied without sliders unless you add them

Reclining seats for the Prelude
Most Preludes are still road cars, and a lot of them are doing long motorway miles, which is why recliners come up as often as buckets on this one.
The Sparco R100 is the default and has been for years. Base mount, and it suits all sizes, which the fixed back list further up this page does not. The R100 Martini is the same seat in Martini trim. The Cobra Le Mans Heritage and the Auto Style Type Retro both suit a nineties coupe better than a modern shell does.
The Corbeau PSR is the one for a wider driver, rated to a 38 inch waist. The Recaro Sportster CS is the expensive answer and it is genuinely a nicer seat for a two hour drive than anything else here. There is more in our reclining sport seats category.

Cages and harnesses
Roll cages
Safety Devices make two bolt in cages for the Prelude, a rear only and a full 6 point. If the car is going to be scrutineered, tell us which championship and which regulations before you order, because the bolt in and weld in answers are different.

Harnesses
A 4 point clip in is the usual answer for a fast road Prelude. If the car has a cage and you are running a fixed back bucket, go to a 6 point and use the sub belt mounting points built into the PCI base.

These are the harnesses we sell most of. The right answer depends on whether the car has a cage, how many mounting points you have to work with, and whether you are running a HANS device. Tell us the setup and we will spec it properly.
Common questions about Prelude seats
Will a bucket seat pass an MOT in a Honda Prelude?
Yes, as long as it is securely mounted to the floor and the seat belt still works as it was designed to. The Planted brackets keep the original seat belt clip buckle, which makes that a shorter conversation at the test station.
Which kit fits my Prelude?
Everything splits at 1997. PCI and Planted each make one bracket for the 1992 to 1996 fourth generation car and one for the 1997 to 2001 fifth generation. They are not interchangeable. Send us the registration if you are not sure.
Can I fit an XL bucket seat in a Prelude?
PCI list Cobra and Corbeau in standard width only across their range. Their side mounts adjust from 375mm to 445mm, so ring us with the seat you want and we will check the mounting width before you order.
Do I need two fitting kits for two seats?
Yes. Everything on this page is priced and supplied per side, so a pair of seats means a driver side kit and a passenger side kit.
Does the PCI kit include the side mounts?
Yes. The adjustable seat mount comes with the frame, a set of side mounts and the full bolt pack. You only need to add the seat.
Should I go for the sliding sub frame or the fixed adjustable mount?
If more than one person drives the car, take the sliding version. The Prelude is a car people daily, and being able to move the seat without a spanner is worth the difference.
